Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / What date for Charlotte?
« on: Friday 30 December 11 20:48 GMT (UK)  »
I've just been sent a email of a photo of what is probably my great-great grandmother Charlotte Rumble by a distant cousin.  It's quite a close up on the face, but can anyone give an opinion about the date it was taken and how old Charlotte is?

Family History Beginners Board / Burial details please
« on: Saturday 24 September 11 12:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,
Could any kind soul find a burial for William Mathews (one T), glass toy maker of Birmingham between 1861 & 1871.  Looking at FreeBMD he could be the WM who was registered Mar 1864, pity this is before ages were given in the index.  He was born 1797/8 and was living in Loveday Street in 1841-61 censuses, all his children were baptised at St Phillips, Birmingham which is now the cathedral (I think).  :-*

Technical Help / BBC iplayer upgrade
« on: Friday 16 September 11 22:30 BST (UK)  »
Is there any way round this?  BBC iplayer website won't now let me watch anything online as it says I need to update my Flash player to at least v10.3  However, my gas-powered pc is still using Windows 2000 operating system and the highest version of Flash supported is 10 which I already have installed ::)

The Common Room / Lost at sea??
« on: Wednesday 15 December 10 20:29 GMT (UK)  »
William Pittman was a mariner who made his will on 24/01/1747 saying he was "bound on a voyage to sea".  His will was proved by his widow, Betty, on 26/04/1749 and he doesn't appear to have been buried in either his latest place of abode or his home town.  Is this too early a date to discover whether he was lost at sea or more about his sailing career?  His nephews were also mariners who seem to have been sailing regularly as far as Newfoundland (this was before accurate methods of determining longitude which is amazing to me) and one of them later settled there.

The Common Room / Oh what a tangled Webb
« on: Tuesday 07 December 10 21:10 GMT (UK)  »
Frederick Webb married Sarah Ann Mea[a]sey in January 1871 at St Jude's, Birmingham.  Fred's age is given as 23 and his father as John Webb, labourer.  Have found the following on the censuses:

1871 RG10; Piece: 3137; Folio: 73; Page: 46  Fred and Sarah with her parents (oldest daughter was Sarah Ann E., not Sophia though, registered the same quarter they were married)  Fred's birthplace is Birmingham.  Sarah's parents seem to have been Joseph and Elizabeth Measey (baptism at St Martins, Birmingham in 1849) and her address at marriage is Highgate Street so fairly sure this is them.

1881 RG11; Piece: 3015; Folio: 42; Page: 24 Fred and Sarah with children, Fred's birthplace is Shipston on Stour, Worcs

1891 RG12; Piece: 2404; Folio 36; Page 19 Fred and Sarah with children and one grandchild, Fred's birthplace is Birmingham

There are a couple of births for a Fred Webb in Shipston in 1847 but I can't find a likely Fred in the 1861/51 censuses  :-\ any help gratefully received.

The Common Room / Jane who??
« on: Tuesday 07 December 10 20:20 GMT (UK)  »
Helping my daughter trace her partner's tree for him for Christmas so taking a few short cuts  :-\  Looking for George Mathews (one 'T', age 21, allegedly, at marriage in December 1884) with father William Mathews, occupation at time of son's marriage was glass toy maker - have found the following on the censuses with good match for William on occupation/age:

1881 RG11; Piece: 3009; Folio: 66; Page: 16 George age 18 with William and Jane
1871 RG10; Piece: 3121; Folio: 48; Page: 7 George age 5 with William and Emma
1861 RG9; Piece: 2154; Folio: 116; Page: 5 William and Emma before George was born
1851 HO107; Piece: 2057; Folio: 311; Page: 7 ditto

In 1891 William seems to be a widower in the workhouse infirmary (glass button maker) and there is a death for an Emma Mathews in Birmingham in 1887 and one for an Emma Matthews in 1886 which is a slightly better match for age.  So who is Jane or is this an enumerator's error?  And why are the ages for George out between the 1871 and 1881 censuses??

Family History Beginners Board / precious stones or rocks??
« on: Saturday 27 November 10 21:28 GMT (UK)  »
Is anyone with access to the original docs for the 1881 census able to tell me if it's possible an enumerator has got the wrong end of the stick??  George Mathews, aged 18, of Birmingham, Warwickshire shows as a "Stone Polisher (Mason)" on the familysearch site. The George Mathews I'm after is consistent in calling himself a "lapidary" on his marriage certificate and in the 1901 and 1891 census (as seen on the library edition of Ancestry).  Be interested to know whether the "mason" was added afterwards/in a different hand.  George's father, William, is shown as a Glass Toy Pincher on his marriage certificate and this 1881 census entry would fit well if it weren't for the mason bit!  ::)

The Common Room / go-between **COMPLETED THANKS**
« on: Saturday 20 November 10 17:42 GMT (UK)  »
My daughter, having been completely uninterested in my 'playing with the dead people' has suddenly decided to trace her partner's tree for his Christmas pressie  ::) Of course, I have let all my sub's lapse, and the Ancestry library edition doesn't seem to give access to the Family Trees search part of the website.  Could any kind soul willing to send a message on Ancestry to the two tree holders with my daughter's partner's paternal grandfather in their tree pm me and I'll pass on my contact details.
Many thanks,
Ermy
