World War Two / Africa Star and Rosette
« on: Friday 16 November 18 22:38 GMT (UK)  »
I was looking at the WW2 records of my Dad's service as an RAF despatch rider. It records he was awarded the Africa Star and Rosette. I think this was issued to everyone one who landed in Africa.
Can anyone explain the significance of the 'Rosette'? Was it some sort of clasp and were these routinely issued together?

Many thanks,

Stoney

World War One / War memorials
« on: Saturday 10 November 18 10:54 GMT (UK)  »
At this special time of year, War memorials the length and breadth of the land will have been cleaned and prepared for the historic centenary of the 1918 Armistice.

I found this picture of my Grandfather, Joe Beattie (in waistcoat and cap, front right of picture) with one of the many memorials he'd worked on, erected shortly after WW1. As a survivor of Passchendaele, I wonder how he must have felt, chiselling a stone replica of fallen comrades? I find it quite humbling, but I am immensely proud of him.

Warwickshire / Cpunting the War dead
« on: Monday 25 June 18 11:03 BST (UK)  »
Any ideas how to determine how many people died in WW1 from a certain town? In Rugby, our knitting group have been asked by the local library to make poppies for a display. They don't seem to know of any numbers of those who were killed. Short of examining every memorial in the borough we are not sure how to determine the correct count. We're trying to contact our local history group but I thought I'd ask here for advice.
Thank you.

The Common Room / Convict transportation lists?
« on: Sunday 23 July 17 19:32 BST (UK)  »
I've returned to one of my 'brick walls' and am still trying to trace an errant relative in my family tree who, thanks to information from a helpful member of RC a while back, apparently ended up dying in Australia, hence no death certificate to be found in British BMD's. There was belated notice posted in his home town newspaper in Carlisle indicating his death and that of another relative on the same day in Castlemaine.

Another RC'er has found mention of what may be the other relative on an ordinary passenger list leaving Britain for Australia, but there's no entry for my 'man of mystery'!

I assumed they'd gone out to join the gold rush but I'm seriously clutching at straws now and wondering if he was sentenced to transportation - are there any lists he'd appear on? (and where would I begin to look?)

Any help or advice greatly received!  ;)

Regards,
Stoney

I came across an old photograph of my Grandfather (extreme right, in the picture) at his stonemason's yard in Carlisle. This was one of a number of War memorial statues his company (Beattie & Co.) produced.

The picture has some writing on the reverse but I can't make it out - it may just be a note scrawled on the back that has nothing to do with the picture. It looks like my Grandmother's handwriting, she would often just reach for the nearest thing to scribble on - we've found shopping lists scribbled on the back of some of our old photos!

Can anyone decipher or enhance the image? I'm posting both the photo and it's reverse in case it offers any clues.

Many thanks for taking the time to look, anyway!

World War Two / Merchant Navy in WW2
« on: Monday 26 December 16 09:02 GMT (UK)  »
After a chance conversation the other day, I discovered one of my mother's cousins had served in the Merchant Navy during WW2 and was shipwrecked on the Skeleton Coast (Namibia). I think he was on the Dunedin Star?
Can anyone advise where to find a crew list?

Mods. - please move this if I've posted in the wrong section.
 Many thanks!

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Old photo slides
« on: Friday 29 July 16 10:43 BST (UK)  »
I've unearthed a stash of photo slides taken by one of hubby's Grandfathers - but can't get the projector to work. Is there any way I could scan them straight onto computer?

Would love any ideas on this. Many thanks!

FH Documents and Artefacts / What to do with old maps?
« on: Friday 29 July 16 10:20 BST (UK)  »
I've been sorting out cupboards and came across a bag of old Ordnance Survey maps which belonged to my husband's Grandfather.

Some are very old, with cloth backing and are mainly geological survey editions (apt, since Grandad went on to work in the Kolar Goldfields in India, assessing rock structure for mining) - they date from 1907-1914. (see pic)

The others are dated between 1946-1960s and are general OS maps of the era.

All the maps are of the south coast and counties, with the exception of one for Skipton (cloth backed and dated 1913)

My question is - what on earth to do with them?

One bears some handwritten annotation - possibly from when the man in question was studying for his degree, so I think that ought to be preserved with the rest of his certificates and papers. Other than his own signature of ownership there is nothing remarkable about the others.

I'm loath to chuck them out so I'll probably end up putting them in a box and back into a cupboard - how should I best preserve them in that case?

Any help/advice/suggestions gratefully received!

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Can anyone identify this 'uniform' please?
« on: Wednesday 02 December 15 18:41 GMT (UK)  »
This is a picture of my Great Aunt Ina (real name 'Robertina). Her dress/uniform reminds me of the Salvation Army but have no family info to back that up.

Can anyone here suggest/confirm what this uniform might be?  I know in later life she was a nursing matron and ran a care home for the elderly.

I'm making up a montage in a clip-frame of various family members (both mine and Mr Stoney's) and what a mixed bag they are - but this is the only 'Salvationist' amongst them. Her mother and at least one of her siblings were staunch members of the Plymouth Brethren, whether that has any bearing.

This picture has seen better days, (unfortunately I only have a digital copy) so if any of you have five minutes I wonder if you might be able to spruce her up a bit, please? Would really love to include her in my pictorial Family Tree picture!

Many thanks for your time,

Stoney
