United States of America / Help with Researching a Murder
« on: Tuesday 28 June 22 19:04 BST (UK)  »
Hope this is in the correct section...

Could anyone please advise how to research a murder (USA early-twentieth century), please? Is there a searchable, online database containing information of this kind?

Looking for info on Dennis Cummins, whom, it is believed, was murdered in the USA (state unknown) some time between 1909 and 1916.

Dennis was from Ireland, and married Kate Curtin, Cork City, in September 1909. It is believed he traveled to the US (reasons unknown) where he was murdered.

Widow Kate, remarried in Cork City, August 1916, to Jeremiah Long.

I appreciate info is scant, but any advice/assistance with this very much appreciated.

With thanks,

P.

England / Bigamy Query
« on: Tuesday 05 October 21 15:07 BST (UK)  »
Apologies if I have posted this in the wrong forum...

Wondering if anyone can offer advice as to the best way to research a (possible) convicted female bigamist?

It is not known for sure if woman in question actually was guilty of bigamy or even convicted of the crime, hence the reason for wishing to research further.

Any tips, advice, suggestions welcome.

With thanks,

P

Antrim / Stillbirth Research (Records of Interment)
« on: Thursday 07 May 20 23:15 BST (UK)  »
Hoping this is posted in the correct forum...

Seeking information regarding research/records on stillbirths in the County of Antrim, specifically the stillbirth of a baby in 1960, at Larne Moyle Hospital.

Ultimately looking to discover place of interment (should one exist) but generally whether or not this is a researchable area and where to seek records in order to investigate further.

Any assistance very much appreciated.

London and Middlesex / Seeking Help/Info on Birth Mother - (*) Phillips
« on: Saturday 04 June 16 12:29 BST (UK)  »
Seeking assistance with research into birth mother - name possibly changed but not known for certain.

(*) Phillips
Born circa 1933
(Auburn hair & grey eyes)
Occupation given on adoption records as 'Gowns Sales-lady

She was the birth mother of a friend whom I am assisting with research - friend's name Laurence Phillips (b. 1952 London).

Information from the 'Church Adoption Society' as follows:

Mother and baby home: 32 Macaulay Road, Clapham, London

Forwarding address info submitted to adoption society as being, 214 Brecknock Road, Tufnell Park, London NW

She may have had connections with the US Navy HQ in London.

This is as much information as we have at the present time; any help/advice as to what may have become of her, greatly appreciated.

Warwickshire / Company Records - Assistance Please.
« on: Monday 07 December 15 23:21 GMT (UK)  »
(Hope this is the correct forum).

I am looking for info on a jeweller, by the name of William Frederick Woodward, b. c. 1876, and his wife Florence Emily (nee Garbett) b.c. 1871, whom, I believe, were the proprietors of various companies in the early part of the C20th. Woodward is recorded in the 1901 census as being a 'Metal Goods Manufacturer'.

To the best of my knowledge, Woodward traded under a number of different names at (I presume) various times, such as 'Woodward & Company', 'Gough & Company' and 'F. E. Woodward'.

The Edinburgh Gazette (April 1905) mentions bankruptcy, though Woodward was (back) in business around the Great War period, manufacturing British military cap badges.

A bit of rummaging has produced several addresses for him: 251 New John Street, West Birmingham... 2 Maurice Road, King's Heath, Worcester... 35 Albion Street, Birmingham... 64 Branston Street, Birmingham.

My main interest is in how/where to obtain company records in respect of the Woodwards' businesses, particularly those connected with the manufacture of military badges. Would anyone have any experience in this sort of research and/or advice as to where archives of this nature might be held/accessed?

With thanks,

Peter.

Armed Forces / Searching for RN Service Record - Arkell
« on: Friday 08 August 14 20:35 BST (UK)  »
Having very little success searching for Royal Navy records in respect of William Matthew Arkell (1871-1960).

William first married in 1895, which narrows down the possible parameters of his service to anywhere from the mid-1880s to the year of his marriage.

The surname is sometimes incorrectly spelt as 'Askell' (as well as other variations) and even on one occasion as 'Abbott'!

It is not 100% certain at this stage that his maritime service was with the Royal Navy, and could conceivably have been with the Merchant Navy.

Any assistance with this search much appreciated.

With thanks,

Peter.

London and Middlesex / Times Look-up, please
« on: Saturday 19 February 11 11:37 GMT (UK)  »
Apologies if I have posted this request in the wrong section.

I am hoping somebody will be able to assist with a Times article of (I am told) 1953. The story was in relation to an infantry battalion of the Honourable Artillery Company, with a headline which roughly read:

'The HAC Has Revived the Art of Toxophily'

...or something very similar.

The story apparently refers to an incident on Salisbury Plain, in which the HAC and a light aircraft were involved in some or other altercation involving 'arrows'!

I am afraid I have no further information, but if anybody can track down a story closely resembling the scant details I have provided, I would be very grateful.

With thanks,

Peter.

Armed Forces / Hired Armed Cutters (Royal Navy?)
« on: Tuesday 04 January 11 16:32 GMT (UK)  »
Dear All,

I would be very grateful if anyone could provide me with any information regarding the Hired Armed Cutter 'Nymph' circa 1800 to 1820 (Dover Straits area).

Two of my direct ancestors apparently served aboard this vessel (presumably Royal Navy) though I know hardly anything of the vessel's story.

The information came to me via a distant relative, with whom I am sadly no longer able to communicate.

Any assistance whatsoever very much appreciated.

With thanks,

Peter.
