Australia / Tracing relatives from 1920/30's
« on: Friday 13 July 07 17:56 BST (UK)  »
I was wondering if somebody could offer some advice as I am looking to find out information regarding my G/Grandfathers brother who emigrated to Australia sometime after the First World War.

His name was Edward Shotton and he was born in Northumberland, England in 1897 and emigrated to Queensland (last known in Rockhampton in 1936).
He was married and had 3 children (Edward, Peggy & Joyce)

Where would I possibly find records on his (and his childrens) lives??

Many Thanks!

I have a Scottish Marriage register copy of my G/G Grandparents but can hardly read the text on it.

If anybody could read this handwriting it would be a great help as I am stumped.  ???

It is the top marriage on the page between John Tucker & Catherine McManus.

The Common Room / Death Certificate
« on: Friday 11 August 06 10:30 BST (UK)  »
I received the 2nd certificate in attempting to find my great great grandfathers death but have a nagging feeling it is still the wrong person.

He was born in 1862 but on the cert I received today this William Shotton died in 1914 at the age of 50, could this have been rounded up?? He should have been 52.

His job is correct (farm labourer) and one of his sons (William) was the informant of the death, this could have been a conincidence however as a lot of fathers named sons after themselves.

I guess I am trying to de-convince myself it is him, I wish I had a way to be more certain.

The Common Room / Divorce Records

My Great Grandfather divorced his 1st wife and I was wondering where I would start or be able to look this record up at a court and would it give a reason??

The divorce would have occured between 1923-26

and so far I am the most controversial of the lot!!  :D :D

I never had a Long birth Cert, my mother never got one at the time so I thought I would order my own.

Low and behold when I open the GRO envelope I see my own birth cert but without a father..... the shock on my face was unreal  ;D

Apparently it was due to my mother and father being unmarried at the time and due to my dads working hours he could not attend the registration and was going to do it at a leter date but never got round to it.

So they are going to get the details updated next week so I will no longer be illegitamate  ;D ;D ;)

Here is a shot of the cert:

The Common Room / Wrong Death Info
« on: Wednesday 02 August 06 13:18 BST (UK)  »
I have been trying for the past week to find my G/G/ Grandfather on the death Index but he is nowhere to be seen.

Could it be possible that the wrong age has been recorded on his death Cert or in the Index?? Has anybody had this problem before??

I tracked him at the 1901 census but know he was dead by 1928 as it was on my Great Grandads marriage cet, but  cant find anything in that range.
