Australia / WILLIAM MAYES
« on: Sunday 29 July 12 00:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I was hoping for some help in finding information about WILLIAM MAYES (Born Co Down), married to ELIZABETH (possibly EPPS).  She was born in Melbourne circa 1874.  They married around 1890 and had at least 1 child in Sydney (JENNIE) in 1893.  I think there was an elder child also.  They then moved to California to have 2 more kids, then back home to Ireland where they settled in Lisburn.   Trying to find any info on their time in Australia, getting there, marriage details and Jennie's birth details.  I'd also like to know more about ELIZABETH.  First time looking at Australia, so any help appreciated.
Thanks

London and Middlesex / help with location
« on: Friday 20 August 10 19:53 BST (UK)  »
I have just found a relative in the Chelsea Pension Records - William Alfred Edwards born c1856 in Bloomsbury London.  Free bmds lists a few births for that name around that date - which would be the correct one for bloomsbury?

st pancras
st giles
kensington
amersham

His father was Albert (a carpenter) and his mother Anne

Do I have to order a birth cert to get details, or are the bmds transcribed online somewhere?  Sorry for silly questions- I'm used to Irish not English genealogy!

Thanks for your help.

Armed Forces / William Alfred Edwards
« on: Thursday 19 August 10 19:57 BST (UK)  »
I am hoping someone may be able to help me.
My GG Grandfather William Alfred Edwards was listed on his marriage certificate in 1885 as a Sergeant, his address given as the Curragh Camp in Kildare.  Is there any way I can find out anything about what regiment he was in, when he enlisted, if he fought etc?

He married Henrietta James in Belfast in 1885, with his father listed as Albert Edwards
He is on the 1901 census in Belfast aged 44 making his DOB c1856.  He seems to have left the army by 1901 as he is listed as a cabinet maker.  It also states he was born in london.  He is not with the family in 1911.

Any advice on how to find out about him would be great.

Other Countries / Henrietta James born in India
« on: Thursday 19 August 10 19:40 BST (UK)  »
I was hoping for some pointers please on how to find my G G Grandmother who was born in India.

Here she is on 1901 census in belfast
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Clifton/Manor_Street/962258/

and in 1911
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/Court/Hartley_Street/135424/

I have Henrietta James' marriage certificate to Sergeant William Alfred Edwards in 1885 in Trinity COI Belfast.  Her father was Patrick James, a messenger.

She was a minor when she married in 1885
The 1901 and 1911 censuses put her birth between 1866-70.

As you can see she says she was born in India.  I was hoping to find a birth for her, but am having no luck.  I don't know who her mother was, where in India she was born, or why her father was in India.

Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Fermanagh / Johnston/ Carrothers from Bellvue and Manley
« on: Friday 21 August 09 23:54 BST (UK)  »
I've just started on my daughter's family tree.  Any help would be appreciated as she wants to do her tree by herself, but she's only ten, so I thought I'd do a bit of ground work so I can tell her where to look.

Her grandfather is XXXX MANLEY from Enniskillen, one of 13 children born to William Manley and Dorothy Johnston.

Any info on the Manley family would be appreciated.

Dorothy Johnston was born to Richard Johnston and Margaret Carrothers (married 17/05/1906), both from Bellvue, Enniskillen.  They also had a daughter Violet Johnston who married Freddy Lucy.

Margaret Carrothers' father was James Carrothers, a steward and Richard Johnston's father was a labourer.
Any info on the Johnston and Carrothers families from Bellvue would be appreciated.

Thanks

Karen

Derry (Londonderry) / McGarvey
« on: Tuesday 23 June 09 00:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi all
I am looking for my Great Granda James Archibald Lamont McGarvey.

He was born in County Derry, as per 1911 Census.  He said he was 36 at the census time though I'm aware the ages are sometimes a bit out.

He married and lived in Belfast with his wife Mary Ann Robinson and his children.  His marriage certificate says his father was William John McGarvey.  I have no idea if he had any siblings.

It is believed in our family that he came from the Cookstown area, and as I said he wrote County Derry on the census.  I know some of Cookstown is in Derry and some in Tyrone.

From the census his DOB should be 1874 or 75.  On IGI family search I found a possibility.

James McGarvey born 03 AUG 1873, Moneymore, Londonderry, mother Sarah Pherson, Father William John McGarvey.
As per Emerald Ancestors this couple were married on 27 june 1872, in lissan parish, magherafelt.

I also found on Emerald Ancestors a William John McGarvey marriage to Jane Dougal on 2 april 1859 in Desertlyn, cookstown.  But no idea if they had a child called James.  This marriage would be roughly 15 years before my approx date for James' birth.

So my question is this... how do I confirm my James' birth as being Sarah Pherson's child, Jane Dougal's child or some other person's child?

I'm a bit stuck, I'd appreciate any advice.
Thanks
Karen

Here's a photo of him with Mary Ann his wife
