Australia / Where is Alma Matthews and how does she fit into our Matthews family tree?
« on: Thursday 03 December 20 11:25 GMT (UK)  »
Our family mystery begins with Alma Matthews.....

Alma had a child named Amy Ellen who was born Matthews on 17 Jan 1918 in Victoria, Australia.
We cannot find a birth record for Amy.

In 1919, Amy's mother Alma took her to a babies home in Broadmeadows, a suburb of Melbourne and left her there.

My cousin and I have a DNA match to 1 of Amy's Grand Daughters.
(Her half sister's DNA result is pending)
We have all connected and have tried to work out how Alma fits into our family.

We've decided to ask for some help from the Rootschatters as we seem to be going around in circles.

My cousin and I share Great Grandparents.
(James Ralph Matthews and Lillian Tiffen....Discussed previously in another topic)

Our new DNA cousins have provided the scant information they have.
Their Grandmother was known as Amy Ellen Rose Gleed (nee Matthews)
who died in Kyneton,Victoria 26 May 2003.

Amy married Richard Edward (Ned) Clohesy (1911-1969)
27 Aug 1938 at St.John's Church, East Melbourne.
Ref#10176

There are possibly other children belonging to Alma Matthews also.

Thankyou all in advance,
Peg

Australia / James Ralph Matthews (who are his parents) m. Lillian Tiffen Tasmania
« on: Tuesday 02 June 20 04:01 BST (UK)  »
James Ralph Matthews married Lillian Tiffen in Broken Hill NSW June 1891.
They were married at The Manse ,Sth. Broken Hill according to the rights of the Baptist Church. The marriage certificate says James was a contractor and that his parents are unknown.
Hoping that James' death certificate would provide his parents names also proved fruitless.
James died in Ascot Vale in Victoria 23 May 1922,aged 61.
It says he was born in Longford Tasmania.
His wife Lillian is still living. The children listed are;
Nettie May 32   (Nettalie May)
James Robert 30   (James Robert was informant)
Ivy Lily 28
Dorothy 25   (Mary Ann Dorothy Louisa)
Herbert 23   (Herbert William)
Walter 20  (Walter Clem)
Nora 19   (Nora Ellen)
Violet 17
Olive 16
Ernest 13   (Ernest Ralph)
Elsie 11   (Elsie Elizabeth)
Tyrill 6   (Tyrill Evelyn)

James met Lillian in Wilcannia NSW. He held an Engine Drivers Certificate according to his son Walter Clem and was working on digging dams on large outback properties. It's understood that James returned to Tasmania to start work with the Emu Bay Railway, most certainly before October 1898 as Herbert William was born there.
James' son believed that his father had 6 or 7 brothers and that he didn't know where they were.
James' first 4 children were born in Wilcannia and Broken Hill NSW.
His remaining children were born in and around Emu Bay Tasmania.
The Emu Bay Estate included Ridgley which is about 15 km. south of Burnie and formed part of the Van Diemens Land Company.
Walter Clem, known as Clem and his sisters Violet and Netallie, known as Nellie were pupils at Ridgley School.

So James Ralph Matthews is our brick wall......we cannot find a record of his birth in Tasmania.
Any help would be so very much appreciated please, before I go loopy.
   Kindest regards,
                     Peggle

I'm not too sure where to go with this request, so would be very greatful for some advice.
An earlier post in the Armed Forces section, (see link below)

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,322238.0.html

has not been very fruitful. There are some details relating to the photo which I thought could perhaps, help identify where it was taken. I had hoped to find something that might get me closer to identifying the man in the photo. It's been in the family for many years and I'm still trying to see a bigger picture relating  to the person in the photo.

Kindest thanks,
Peggle

Armed Forces / Please help identify Scot in Germany in WW2
« on: Tuesday 19 August 08 07:01 BST (UK)  »
I am wondering about Scottish service personal who may have been in Germany in the Second World War. I'm trying to identify someone in a photo I've had for many years but I don't have a name. There is some pencil writing on the bottom right corner of the photo mount which says Tasma Studios Woolwich or Westwick. The man is wearing a heavy woollen looking coat with a collar and large breast pockets with  scalloped flaps. The jacket is open at the neck exposing a shirt and dark  tie. The back of the photo mount has Walsh written on it in blacklead pencil.
Any ideas that may help me put a bigger picture around this photo would be greatly appreciated.
cheers from Peggle.

Leicestershire / Re 'Hillcrest' Swain St. Leicester
« on: Saturday 26 August 06 04:13 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have any info on 'Hillcrest' in Swain St. Leicester for the period around 1900-1949? I've googled the name and it didn't come up with much. Would there be any records that may be accessed on-line? I have some details listing Frank Perkins aged 43 associated with 'Hillcrest' for 1901. Also according to a death certificate, a Frank Perkins died there in 1949 aged 53. This is a Frank b.1896 whose occupation was a Hosiery Trimmer. His son was also Frank b.1930 and also a Hosiery Trimmer.
Would be so greatful for anything........Peggle

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / re.Furmston/Staunton NZ
« on: Wednesday 23 August 06 06:01 BST (UK)  »
Anyone able to shed some light on this little mystery?  Florence Amelia Furmston was born in Vic, Australia on 23.9.1869. At some time she travelled to New Zealand and married Michael John Staunton in 1901 in Dunedin, Otago. She died in 1902. There is a birth for Cora Bessie Staunton in 1902. Perhaps this is Florence's child? She may have died in childbirth? I have looked and looked but can't find anything on Florence except reference to her marriage to John Staunton. Have looked at some passenger lists and cemetery records without success. (Still so much to learn 'bout this new interest that has occupied my every waking moment....)  Curious to know name of boat Florence sailed on and if she was actually buried in New Zealand. Any input would be so appreciated.  RootsChat rocks...Peggle
