Devon / Photograph of headstone in St Marys, St Marychurch
« on: Sunday 22 September 13 03:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Is there anyone who could locate and photograph a headstone in St Marys at St Marychurch?
My Gt Gt Grandfather was John Algate, born in Wembury but lived for many years in Furrough Cross, St Marychurch.
As a child during the '50's we spent our holidays in St Marychurch and I can remember my Grandmother telling me her Grandfather was buried there, as a 5-9 year old I didn't give it much thought but now it is of interest and would be gratefully received.
I can remember waiting for the bus into Babbacombe or Torquay outside St Marys.
Thanks

Europe / German Immigrants c. 1883 KNEBEL
« on: Tuesday 21 April 09 23:55 BST (UK)  »
I believe we have a family connection to a German immigrant family in Bethnal Green.
The Head of Family, Wife and first child are recorded in the 1891 census as "German Resident". Subsequent children are born in England so it appears 1883 is the entry period.
.
The Christian names we have are Richard but appear on census as Rudolph, so I assume there was some pacifying of the names.

Was there any registration for immigrants around the 1880-1890 period that might reveal the origin of these immigrants? All we have at present is 'Germany'.

Thanks
Tony

In the 1920 census Albert was at 149 Wesson Street, Pontiac. Michigan.
In 1930 he was at 20 Michigan Ave, Pontiac.

Any help with Matie's maiden name appreciated and a possible date for the death of Albert.

Wiltshire Lookup Requests / STOWELL - Hilperton c.1810
« on: Sunday 14 December 08 06:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I'm hoping someone can help me with the baptism of William Stowell at Hilperton about 1810?

In the '51 census he records Bradford and in the '61 and '71 Hilperton. He married and died in Walcot Bath.

It may be recorded as Stawell.

Thanks

Somerset / Avon Street, Bath. Somerset
« on: Tuesday 04 November 08 05:47 GMT (UK)  »
I was unable to post a pic in a reply so had to start a new thread,

So Mary if you stumble on this here is a view of Avon Street in 1860.

You are quite right that Avon Street had a fair share of Boarding Houses. During the 1800's many families came to Bath looking for work and their first accomodations were often in the many Boarding Houses around the City. So their stay there would be short. Some of our ancestors began their association with Bath in Avon Street
Avon Street was described as "a desperate and impoverished place..."

The Family lived in the Lyncombe Widcombe area of Bath.

Devon Lookup Requests / I need some help, CHUMMINGS East Stonehouse
« on: Sunday 09 December 07 06:42 GMT (UK)  »
I have a William Chummings born 1859 in Melbourne Australia.
In the 1891 Census  RG12/1739 he was living at 75 Union Street. East Stonehouse. Where he was described as 'Grocers Porter'.
The home of Matilda Bartlett, Bookseller and Stationer.
Also at this address was his married sister Elizabeth Hayden, also born in Australia.

I am unable to find William in the 1901 Census.

His Father was a soldier with the 40th Reg. of Foot and served in Australia, which gives reason to Williams POB.
William spent about 5 years at the Royal Military Asylum at Chelsea after the family returned to England. His Mother having died soon after their return.

So it may be possible that William 'took the Kings Shilling' after 1891 altho he would've been in his 30's. There was a Marine Barracks at East Stonehouse.

Any leads to his whereabouts would be gratefully received.

Thanks
