Surrey / TILT, Tadworth and Kingswood, 1841 & '51
« on: Saturday 28 July 18 17:33 BST (UK)  »
Please can anyone help me to locate the whereabouts of Thomas and Ann TILT more accurately?  In the 1841 census they are living in Kingswood, I believe alongside the turnpike road, with their daughter Elizabeth and son-in-law Edward PRESTON.  Thomas TILT is described as a farmer, and the fifth member of the household was an 8 year old, Nathaniel SHOVE, described as a cow boy, so perhaps Thomas was keeping stock on the common.

By 1851 the TILT couple are living on their own, in north Tadworth, and Thomas is described as a retired farmer.  Thomas died in 1852 and Ann a year later, and they are both buried in the churchyard of St Andrew's Kingswood.

Please can anyone who understands the lie of the land better than I do advise me whether these are two separate addresses, or one and the same?  I should like to imagine Thomas and Ann surrounded by lavender fields, but perhaps they were in the wrong place for that, or perhaps lavender was not grown commercially at that time?

With thanks for any ideas,

Beetle.

Surrey / David May estate at Epsom, 1813
« on: Tuesday 20 September 16 20:47 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone come across this property?  It appears in the executors' accounts for the will of John Tilt of Capel in 1813.  It seems that John held a mortgage on it, but where in Epsom is it, and who was David May?

Any ideas gratefully received,

Berkshire Completed Look ups / Furze Platt, Cookham, 1901 census
« on: Sunday 14 October 12 14:25 BST (UK)  »
My great-grandfather Thomas Hennessy, who was serving in the Indian Army, was sent home on six months' convalescent leave with his family in May 1900.  His wife Marian obviously stayed on, since she appears in the 1901 census with their children at Altmore, Furze Platt, Cookham.  (Looking at the enumerator's walk, Altmore is quite near the Golden Harp Tavern.)  She must have stayed at least until the end of May, when the two youngest children were baptised at St Joseph's Catholic Church, Maidenhead.

I am wondering which school these Roman Catholic children were likely to have attended, and whether any school log might be available.  The period would be roughly May 1900 to May 1901, to the best of my knowledge.  The children were Eileen (13), Thomas (12), Mary (9), John (7), Jim (6) and the two year old twins Margaret and Frances.

The twins could not be christened in India because the army chaplain would not accept the Protestant sponsors chosen by the parents.  Are any records from St Joseph's extant that might throw some light on this baptism, or any other aspect of the famiy's stay in Furze Platt?

I should be very grateful for advice from people with local knowledge.

Best wishes,

Beetle.

Surrey / Inquest East Dulwich 1932
« on: Tuesday 06 September 11 20:29 BST (UK)  »
Please can anyone advise where I could find the report of an inquest held on 8th April 1932 into the death of Francis Clement Smith?  He died in a house in Belvoir Road, East Dulwich.  I was told an account of the inquest also appeared in a newspaper, as it was a suicide.

I should be grateful for any help.

Surrey / Ann Peters, Dorking, c1750 COMPLETED
« on: Monday 15 August 11 22:44 BST (UK)  »
Please can anyone help with identifying the Ann Peters who married John Tilt of Newdigate at Dorking on 3rd February 1766?  I don't know exactly when she was born, but it would have been in the late 1740's I should think.  She already had an illegitimate child called Peter Peters (I can't find his baptism either).

I should be grateful for any assistance,

Surrey / 55 Gt Queen St, Lincoln's Inn Fields, 1840
« on: Sunday 15 May 11 18:16 BST (UK)  »
Joseph Tilt and his family left Capel some time between 1833 and 1835 to seek their fortune in London.  A letter has recently come to light written by Joseph from 55 Great Queen Street, Lincoln's Inn Fields, to an estate agent in Dorking, instructing him to sell "my little place in the Holmwood".

Please can someone who is more adept at reading the old maps than I am locate number 55 in Great Queen Street?  I think it must be on the site now occupied by the Masonic Hall, but I am not sure.

His occupation in the 1841 census is cow keeper (he was a dairyman). It would be nice to think he might have been keeping his cows in Lincoln's Inn Fields!

With thanks for any help in map-reading,

Beetle.

Surrey / Mary Mobsey death, ?Dorking
« on: Wednesday 30 March 11 17:43 BST (UK)  »
Please can anyone help me find a death record for Mary Mobsey, who was baptized Mary Tilt on 31st August 1781 in Dorking?  She married Henry Mobsey in Dorking on 30th June 1800.  Her father John Tilt left her £500 in his will, which he wrote in 1802, but I have lost all trace of her since.

I would assume she stayed in Surrey, but of course I can't be sure.

With thanks for any assistance,

Beetle.

This church was a new build in 1836, and according to Cliff Webb, who transcribed the registers, burials began only in 1853.  The first to be interred was Thomas TILT of Banstead on 17th March 1853, followed the following February by his widow Ann TILT.

I am expecting a visit next month from a fifth cousin in America who is a direct descendant of Thomas and Ann.  I should love to be able to show her where her ancestors are buried, but when I visited the churchyard, I could find no old graves at all.  The church website doesn't give any leads about who to contact on a matter like this, apart from the clergy themselves, who must be very busy.

Does anyone have a suggestion about who might know where to find the graves at St Andrew's?

Surrey Completed Look up Requests / St Mary's Shalford, Tilt marriage 1830
« on: Tuesday 04 August 09 17:47 BST (UK)  »
Do any Rootschatters familiar with St Mary's Shalford know who the COLTOON SMITHS were?

My great-great-grandparents William TILT and Sarah RICHARDS married at St Mary's on 2nd December 1830.  William was a shoemaker from Capel, near Dorking, but living in Wonersh (an adjacent village to Shalford).  Sarah came from Bentley in Hampshire, and presumably was in service in Shalford.

The witnesses at the marriage were William(?) Coltoon Smith, Elizabeth Smith, Mary Coltoon Smith, Elizabeth Edwards and William Travers.  It's rather a lot for a humble wedding, and none of them is a Tilt relative.  Could they include Sarah Richards's employers?

I also have an earlier connection with St Mary's in that John TILT, again from Capel, married Ann DAVES there on 24th November 1791.  The witnesses on that occasion were Samuel RICHARDSON and Ann ROE (?).  Ann Tilt, widow of John, was buried at Shalford on 26th August 1798.  I believe they had no surviving children, as none is mentioned in the lengthy will of John's father, also John Tilt, who died in 1811.  I have not been able to discover anything about this couple, and wonder whether their names resonate with anybody?

I should be grateful for any help or advice,

Beetle.
