Family History Beginners Board / Can anyone find Winifred Harriet Dean?
« on: Sunday 04 June 23 16:42 BST (UK)  »
She was born in 1899 in Plymouth, a daughter of William George and Harriet Amelia Dean. She had three brothers - William b 1895, Stanley b 1898 and Alan b 1901 - and a sister Rita b 1910. They have all been traced but I cannot find Winifred after the 1911 census when they were all still in Plymouth, other than the family are in a record in 1914 arriving at Ellis Island, New York, but they returned to England.

Edited - I forgot to mention that William b 1895 did not go to America / Bermuda; neither did Alan who died in 1902. Stanley died in 1916.

Family History Beginners Board / James Charles Edward Price
« on: Thursday 06 April 23 09:14 BST (UK)  »
His mother's maiden name is Sadd. His birth was registered March qr. 1883 Poplar.

Much is known about the rest of his family ie in https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=736047.0
However, I cannot find anything about James after his birth registration. There are a few possibilities:

I am thinking more about the death registration for him, partially because his two older siblings and one younger sibling were all with their grandparents in Suffolk in 1891 and 1901 and, if he were still alive then, why would he not have been there with them?

Technical Help / Windows 11
« on: Tuesday 14 March 23 11:44 GMT (UK)  »
I have a laptop, about a month old, with Windows 11.

After setting it up, I copied some documents and pictures from the desktop of the old, no longer used laptop to a memory stick, then put the contents from the memory stick onto the desktop of the new laptop so I could decide which to keep at my leisure.

This morning I found that the desktop contents had disappeared! Some were documents, some pictures, some shortcuts. Eventually, I found they had somehow gone in something called Joy-personal. I did, though don't remember how, manage to put them in another folder called desktop and that folder is on the desktop now.

How can I stop this happening again, please?

Technical Help / Calibration needed
« on: Tuesday 07 March 23 15:48 GMT (UK)  »
I have been notified that the battery needs calibration. I have looked at how to do this but became a little confused.

It is plugged in all the time and the laptop is only a few weeks old. Can someone help me with this, please? Thank you.

The battery is functioning correctly, but it needs to be calibrated. You will experience shorter battery life between charges if the battery is not calibrated.

The Common Room / Andrey Merrill
« on: Saturday 04 March 23 14:51 GMT (UK)  »
This gentleman is in the 1921 census with my relative Stella Merrill and her daughters. His birthplace is described as U.S. America Missouri. I can only find him in one other place, that is in the passenger list, attached, having left New York to arrive in Liverpool 28 June 1908.

Can anyone find him anywhere else, please?

Technical Help / Power efficient settings in Windows 11
« on: Friday 24 February 23 13:48 GMT (UK)  »
This https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/power-efficient-settings-in-windows-11-0d6a2b6b-2e87-4611-9980-ac9ea2175734 talks about new default settings for modern standby devices and for S3 devices. I am not sure which one applies to my new Windows 11 computer. Either way, they seem quite a short time. My computer is a Windows 11 Home Version 22H2.

Which screen etc savings would be best, please, for mine? Thank you.

Armagh / Samuel Graham Nesbitt's possible death record, 1942
« on: Tuesday 15 March 22 22:51 GMT (UK)  »
Having searched in https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk/ for a death record for Samuel Graham Nesbitt, I have come across one that could be him. He was born about 1852 so the age would be about right and it is the only one that I could find for his name. The trouble is that I am uncertain about all the wording and when I tried to save the image, notification appeared on the screen that it is prohibited to do so. Also, I have discovered that I can only look again at the image for 72 hours after having paid for the credits.

Is it at all possible that someone may be going to GRONI that could check just the one detail, please?

This is what I have copied from the site:

Would anyone have access to baptismal parish registers, please, for Portsea / Portsea Island?

Bertie Harrison was born in 1881, birth registered December qr. Portsea Island and possibly died age 1, named Berty, death registration September qr. 1882 Portsea.

William Henry Harrison was born in 1881, birth registered December qr. Portsea Island and possibly died age 1, death registration June qr. 1882 Portsea.

Their mother's maiden name is Harrison.

I am hoping to find out that their mother is Emily Harrison. She was in "The Home Female Penitentiary" in Portsea Island in 1881. Three years later she married John Bessant, the marriage registered Portsea Island.

There is another Harrison child with mother's maiden name Harrison around that time, and in that area, a Bertha Ann  born in 1882, birth registered December qr. Portsea Island, but I have not, yet, discovered any more facts about her.
