All remaining gravestones at Brothertoft Churchyard are online at Find A Grave website, or via Ancestry. I personally photographed these pictures and put them online as a free resource.

Brothertoft church was not a parish church but a chapel of ease to Kirton Parish until 1922. The chapels registers date back to the 1680s.

More information can be supplied if interested.

Can anyone please enlighten me as to where Wrawby All Saints church/chapel is please? The parish church is dedicated to St Mary and now I'm confused - is it possibly the cemetery? Thanks in advance.

Kent / Wilks of Faversham
« on: Wednesday 04 April 12 12:11 BST (UK)  »
Looking for Edward and Thomas Wilks of Faversham Kent, who were brothers.

Edward Wilks marries at least twice, having a son Charles from his first marriage, in 1760. His second wife was Jane Stanley (m.1769 Ospringe), and she bore him Frederick and Thomas Prescott Wilks.

Edward was storekeeper of the Royal Gunpowder Mills and built Belmont House in 1769, selling it 10 years later.

Of Edwards children:
Charles Wilks becomes superintendant of Ballincollig gunpowder mill in Cork, Ireland.

Frederick becomes Clerk of Cheque at Faversham mill.

Thomas Prescott Wilks becomes a surgeon and lives at Charing, where he dies in 1850. He was married to Mary Hawkes or Hawker and had a son Charles who was also a surgeon in Charing.

Edwards Brother Thomas Wilks worked for Sir Charles Frederick until he was shot in the face, in 1770, and thereafter disappears, although he apparently survived this attack.

I would like to know: any details of Edward and Thomas date/place of birth/death - parentage, any more marriage info, any more on the children, (but not later issue) and any further details of their work at the gunpowder mills- especially dates.

Many thanks

Australia / Elias BOSS & John Budd (Jack) GRAY
« on: Sunday 10 April 11 23:36 BST (UK)  »
The men in the header were both found guilty of Horse Stealing from Mrs Blades of Lincolnshire, England, in 1844 and were sent to Van Diemens Land, now Tasmania.

I have already researched these mens histories and am very interested to make contact with any living descendants. (already have a few). Photos of descendants of either man would be very much appreciated.

John Budd (Jack) Gray had several children by Frances "Fanny" Dowlen/Dowling in Tasmania before moving to Geelong, Victoria after winning his ticket of freedom. He died in Geelong in 1868.

Elias Boss had children by Frances Bonney and remained in Tasmania where he died in 1919.

Many thanks.

Travelling People / Ellen Gray & Henry Smith (Lincs)
« on: Monday 28 February 11 19:43 GMT (UK)  »
For all those researching Ellen Gray & Henry Smith of Lincs - she d/o Christopher Gray & Maria Smith.
It was previously deducted that Ellen was baptised as Dinah because she gave her age and place of birth as those of Dinah Gray (c.1842 Scredington Linc) and Dinah DISAPPEARED about the same time as Ellen makes her first appearance, although the reasoning behind a name change was never discovered.

Well, Dinah was her little sister, and no doubt the ages are approximate as are the places of birth because parents simply couldnt remember and didnt much care anyway. Anyway the point is this:

Eleanor Gray c.11.04.1840 Chapel Hill, Lincs, d/o Christopher & Maria, labourer (place of abode blank).
