Glamorganshire / Morgans at "The Cross" Little Reynoldston / Penrice
« on: Thursday 12 January 17 20:56 GMT (UK)  »
My Morgan family lived at "The Cross" in what was sometimes listed as Reynoldston and sometimes Penrice. On maps it's technically "Little Reynoldston".

My question is, if anyone is from that area.. was there a farm/house called "The Cross" or does it refer to the area? I know there is "Little Reynoldston" farm further up the street and on some maps "The Cross" is marked as being between the crossroards and that farm.. on the same side of the road. (map attached)

Info about the family if anyone is interested:
William Morgan b. 1773 Porteynon married Sarah Smith. They were in the above area in very early 1800s. (based on children's baptisms)  William was at The Cross until his death in 1855.  After that his son, Richard Morgan, b. 1820, Reynoldston, lived there. He was married to Elizabeth Williams of Porteynon.  Richard lived at The Cross  until his death in 1901. He was very active in agricultural shows.

Richard's sons did not settle at The Cross. Richard Jr lived in Penrice Village and William moved to Swansea.

William's father John was born in Reynoldston in 1730 (son of William Morgan). John settled at Moor Corner in Porteynon.  I'm assuming that John's father may have left some land where John's son, William, eventually settled.

I'm descended through John of Moor Corner's son, Thomas, who settled at Moor Corner.  Thanks in advance for any info on "The Cross".

Cheshire / Question about Tithe maps
« on: Wednesday 14 October 09 19:55 BST (UK)  »
Found this great site with the tithe maps for 1836-51 .. and you can match up with modern map.

http://maps.cheshire.gov.uk/tithemaps/

My question is concerning the "Occupier(s)'.. might someone lease the property .. but then re-rent it out? So that "Occupier(s)" may not actually be the people living at the property?

The reason that I ask is that I know for sure that certain relatives were living in specific towns.. I can even pinpoint the parcel on the maps.. but it doesn't list my relatives as the occupiers.
As a matter of fact.. I've looked up multiple names.. and none of them show up in the index.

So I'm assuming that they rented from the person who was "leasing" the land from the owner?

Cheshire / Watermen (canals) in 1851
« on: Thursday 30 August 07 23:20 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know where (which census districts) watermen might be listed.. popular "docks" or whatever?

I've been searching for Robert Houghton in the Warrington area.
In 1851 his family is living in  Appleton / Birchdale area.
His wife (Margeret Rowlinson Houghton b. 1815 Warrington) is listed as "Waterman's wife" and he is "absent".
In 1861, his wife is widowed.

Robert and Margaret were married in Stretton in 1846.
Youngest child was born 1856, so Robert probably died between '56 and '61
although he's not listed as deceased on daughter's marriage record in 1869. He was just listed as "Robert, waterman".
So I guess there is the chance he was not dead.. just "absent" in '61 also, but Margaret is still widowed in '71 so I'm going with the earlier death year.

I don't mind going through census page by page, since spelling variations and no knowledge of birth year or place make indexes difficult.  However, I'd like to narrow down to areas where there is good chance that boats may be docked first.

Thanks in advance for any help on this family.
Robert and Margaret's daughter, Jane Houghton, is my 3XGreat Grandmother.

Glamorganshire / "Pilewell" in Penmaen? Middleton, Rhossilli?
« on: Thursday 21 June 07 21:54 BST (UK)  »
I have searched in vain on old and new maps for an area of Penmaen called "Pilewell".
Not Pyle Well in Rhossilli.

In 1861 my family was at Pilewell in Penmaen.

I've been finding family homes on google earth..and am stumped on this one.

Also.. and specific location for where Middleton is in relation to Rhossilli?

Any help appreciated.
I've been excited that I can pinpoint most of the exact farms that my family lived on in Porteynon, Oxwich and Penrice.
