Cheshire Lookup Requests / Electoral Registers 1924
« on: Wednesday 06 January 16 17:48 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone have access to the 1924 Electoral Register for 28, Marne St., Rock Ferry, Birkenhead?

According to the CWGC in 1916 a Maurice (Morris) Humphreys died there, his wife being Ellen Humphreys and in 1924 she was still residing in the house.

I need to know if any other adult was living at that address in 1924.

Here's hoping SKS can help out

Many thanks

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Help needed for the 1851 Census
« on: Tuesday 11 August 15 17:37 BST (UK)  »
I am attempting to trace the following family in the 1851 census;
Henry Knowles born about 1796 (1841 census shows him as a Private Watchman not born in Lancs)
Esther Knowles his wife born about 1816 in Lancashire
John Knowles, son, born early 1837 in Salford
Thomas Knowles, son, born 15 April 1841 Salford
The 1841 census has the family living at Canal Street, Salford.

What is also known is that on the 23 June 1851 at 7 Phoenix St. Hulme Esther died age 40 of Kidney failure, Husband is shown as Henry a “Horse Keeper”? Informant was an Alice Bloomfield also of 7 Phoenix St.

Now in the 1851 census the residents of 7 Phoenix St. Hulme included a family by the name of Bloomfield including the above Alice, and a family by the name of Latham, Esther Knowles maiden name.

So can SKS please help me in tracing the Knowles family in the 1851 census or must I presume they are part of the census that was totally unreadable.

Many thanks

Lincolnshire / St Paul in the Bail Church, Lincoln
« on: Saturday 26 April 14 17:27 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help with my quest. I am trying to find a copy of either a drawing or preferably a photograph of the Lincoln St Paul in the Bail church post 1877 and that was subsequently demolished in 1971.

The information board on the site does have a drawing but it doesn’t photograph very well and the drawing and photo available on Lincs. to the past appear to be of the earlier and smaller church that was built in 1786 and demolished in 1876.

I do hope someone can help as this was the family church and the one my late mother was baptised in.

Many thanks

I would be interested to learn if anyone else other than me has had trouble accessing the Lincolnshire Marriage Index web site over the past few days?

Rutland Lookup Requests / Help needed in tracing Philip Ball
« on: Monday 30 December 13 15:21 GMT (UK)  »
I am perhaps more fortunate than most in so much as the majority of my research has centred on London and Lincolnshire and any brick walls I have come up against have taken little time in knocking down, except that is for one, a great x 3 Grandfather, Philip Ball, who according to the 1841/51 census and his death certificate was born about 1804. But as for a place of birth the only clues I have are the fact he died in Leicester Asylum in 1852 plus 3 short lines in the Stamford Mercury of the 13th December 1850 that state;

Lincoln Thursday 12th December ‘Philip Ball who is now an inmate of one of the Yorkshire Lunatic Asylums, and who is chargeable to the Parish of St Martin (Lincoln) was proved to belong to the Parish of Oakham

Philip is well known in Lincoln history and I have a full knowledge of his exploits from 1826 to 1852 including the fact he languished in Lincoln castle prison and the London Fleet prison for many years but as I say I have never found a baptism for him.

I am therefore hoping that some kind soul with access to the Rutland and in particular Oakham Parish records may be able to throw some light on the matter. Any help would be appreciated.

Lincolnshire / Who was Lucy Hicks
« on: Friday 24 August 12 16:40 BST (UK)  »
Thought I would post a little exercise for the holiday weekend  ;D. I have been trying to solve this particular query for over 4 years without success for it appears to have no beginning and no end but this is where the story starts

1841 Census HO107/627/9/39/16  Waterside Road, Barrow upon Humber, Glanford Brigg

Sarah Bell             age 25 bn Lincs.
William Bell          age 30 bn Lincs. Inn Keeper
William Bell          age 2   bn Lincs.
Lucy Hicks            age 5    bn Lincs.
Francis Pinchbeck  age 30  bn Lincs. Carpenter
Hanah Wood         age 15  bn Lincs. Female Servant

Now the question is who is Lucy? The above is the only reference I have for her. I have been unable to find any other Census, Baptism, Marriage or Death for her. All I can tell you is that Sarah’s Maiden name was Hicks and she was born in 1812 in Croxton the eldest of child of William and Mary Hicks.

In 1842 both Sarah and William Bell died, William in Barton and Sarah in Scawby. Their son, William, went to live with his maternal Grandparents in Barton where they can be all found in the 1851 census but of Lucy there is no trace.

I believe that Lucy was perhaps a niece of Sarah’s for she had 7 siblings of whom 3 William, Mary and Charles could be Lucy’s parent but I have accounted for all of Williams children baptised in Barrow & Barton, Charles didn’t marry until 1844 and Mary died a spinster at Hatcliffe in April 1837.  Is Lucy her illegitimate daughter, the date of 1837 seems to fit.

Any help would be appreciated.
 Many Thanks
