The Common Room / Great Aunt Florence's death
« on: Wednesday 02 March 11 22:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

We have an on going family mystery which I am hoping to solve.  My Great Aunt Florence Eliza Smith became pregnant outside of marriage in 1924 and according to snippets from the older members of the family, she was 'sent away' to have her baby.  Her baby was registered as being born in 'Mothers Hospital, Clapton'  The birth is registered in Hackney in 1925.

Now this is where the mystery comes in.  Family information has it that Florence Eliza died and then the baby was brought up by her grandparents as another daughter. I am trying to find Florence Eliza's death.  I have found a death on the BMD register in 1932 Vol 1d page 508.

As far as family lore goes, the child did not know any of this until she applied for a passport as an adult.

Now is Battersea close to Clapton?  Would there have to be some form of formal adoption or would it just 'happen'?

The Common Room / Could the Death Certificate date be wrong?
« on: Friday 25 February 11 09:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

I know this sounds silly but is there any way the Birth on a death certificate can be wrong?

My Grandmother Louisa Maud Smith was born on 20th May 1907 in Buckingham, this is the same as is on her death certificate. She was baptised according to Parish Records in January 1908.  However the Birth index has her birth as May 1908.  I am guessing that that the Birth index can't be wrong so it must be her death certificate and the Parish Record.

I have applied for her birth certificate but thought I would see if anyone had seen this before.

Many thanks

Nicky

« on: Friday 15 January 10 20:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

Please can you date this picture of my granny.  I have been told she was about sixteen in this picture which would make it approximately 1922/3.  Can any of you confirm that is roughly correct?

Thank you

Nicky

World War Two / Can you tell what regiment?
« on: Thursday 14 January 10 23:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I have this picture of my Grandfather, I don't know what regiment he was in or any details about where he was.  The only thing I know is that he built Bailey Bridges.

I have another picture of him with his regiment, but it has no details.

Any help would be brilliant.

Thanks

Nicky

Family History Beginners Board / 'Mothers Home'
« on: Wednesday 04 November 09 16:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I have a great aunt who was 'sent away' to a Mothers home in Clapham to have her baby as she was not marrried.  I was able to get a copy of the birth certificate of the baby with ease, however, the mum died shortly after. Her name was Smith and I am having difficulty in verifying this as it was never spoken of within the family.  Does anyone know whether there is likely to be any records anywhere about the Mothers home to see if any light can be shed on this?

Thanks

Nicky
