Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Readman (Clarke) Whitby
« on: Thursday 16 November 06 09:40 GMT (UK)  »
Sculcoates marriage 1892 between:
* Constance Hilda Readman b. Whitby, 1866,  and
* Dr. Joseph Patrick Clarke b. Drogheda, Co. Louth, Ireland 1866.

Constance, "Con", was a sister of a Dr. Readman of Whitby and had an unmarried sister Amy Readman who was born about 1869 and was possibly still living in 1947.

Constance and Joseph, "Joe" had 3 children:

* Francis Eugene Clarke b. Middlesbrough, 25th December, 1893 but died from appendicitis 1919 while studying to be a Jesuit priest

* Hilda Mary Clarke, b. Middlesbrough, 1894, d. abt. 1973.   She was unmarried and was a Teacher in Leeds.

* Constance Rita M. Clarke, b. Leeds, 1900, died young.

Joe, Con and the children all appear in the 1901 Census in the Civil Parish of Headingley with Burley, Leeds - Household: 213, Burley Road, Leeds.

Although this group have no descendants, I am hoping someone might have Dr. Readman of Whitby in their family tree.

Another thought is that Dr. Readman & Dr. Joeseph Clarke practiced together in Whitby for a while (before moving to Middlesbrough and later Leeds) so they might appear in some Directory (Kelly's?) - if someone has access I would appreciate a lookup!

The Lighter Side / Brick Haystack Lookup Please!
« on: Friday 13 October 06 08:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone!

Just for fun I checked for popular phrases on RootsChat:

In Third place: "Needle in Haystack" - 500 posts

In Second place: "Brick Wall" - 3,000 posts

And Finally In First Place: "Lookup Please" - 8,800 posts

Conclusion - there is a lot of frustration out there in the RootsChat community!

Louth / Old Photos of the Tholsel, Drogheda
« on: Monday 09 October 06 10:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi!
I am looking for old photographs of the Tholsel in Drogheda for a slightly odd reason!

My Great Grandfather Eugene Clarke had a drapery shop at 1 West Street and 1 Shop Street, Drogheda both shops being next door to the Tholsel.   I think it was 1 shop with entrances on both streets connected behind the Tholsel.

The shop "E. Clarke & Son" operated from 1886 to 1898 (possibly longer).   Any old photos of the Tholsel might show the shops on either street.

Today the shops are occupied by O2 and Ladbrokes.

Can you help?

p.s. Tholsel comes from 2 old English words Thol meaning "Toll" and Sael meaning "Hall" i.e. a place where Tolls were paid - today we'd call it a Toll-Booth! -pjc

Monaghan / Bernard Clarke, Carrickmacross
« on: Thursday 21 September 06 11:45 BST (UK)  »
Bernard Clarke & wife Catherine Clarke of Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan IRE were listed as parents of their son Eugene Clarke's 1st marriage to Mary Ann McShane of Dungannon, Co. Tyrone at St. Audoen's RC Church, Dublin Mar 1857.

Eugene, b. 1824 (Carrickmacross?), was a Draper in Drogheda, Co. Louth.   Possible relative Robert Clarke, Draper and Haberdasher, Carrickmacross (Pigot's Directory, 1824).

I am descendant of Eugene Clarke and his 2nd wife Frances M. J. O'Neill.

Any additional information would be most welcome.
