The Common Room / Being Paid for Votes. Gloucester 1881
« on: Sunday 10 June 12 21:01 BST (UK)  »
I have come across the following  in Gloucester Citizen date 1st Jan 1881

Charles Lewis-Watkins, Union St, received £.1 from the Conservatives and voted for the Conservaties

Also  other  people have received similar amounts, for the same. Anyone who can enlighten me if this was a regular occurence or info on this.

Did people have to be of a "certain social standing", to vote ?

Any info on the voting system in those days would be great.

Regards

Armed Forces / Royal Marine in 1832
« on: Thursday 17 May 12 21:10 BST (UK)  »
My x 2 Gt Grandfather Jeremiah Speck, was born in Minsterworth,  Gloucestershire.  His wife was called Mary, who was born Plymouth, Devon.
In 1832 my  Gt Grandfather was baptised John Speck,  in East Stonehouse. Which is near Plymouth.

I would be grateful to know if it's possible to find Jeremiah's record whilst being a Marine.  I know virtually nothing about how military records work, or even how to find them. Any help would be much appreciated of how to go about this.

Also within a few short years, Jeremiah was recorded as being a sailor, on later baptisms in the family.

Eventually the whole family returned to live in Gloucester.

Many thanks

« on: Thursday 03 May 12 19:26 BST (UK)  »
My tree is on Ancestry, and I am think of putting Family Tree Maker on my computer also. I understand that it is possible to transfer your Ancester Tree too FTM. From what I have read on the internet, this is not as easy as the advertising makes out.

Does anyone have any experience of doing this.

Thanks

Herefordshire / Thomas Durham died 1862. Ross on Wye
« on: Tuesday 07 June 11 20:54 BST (UK)  »
I am researching Thomas and Mary Durham Nee Knight. Thomas was born Wellington, Herefordshire, in abt 1822 and died Ross on Wye 9th Oct 1862. Mary his wife was born Blakemere, Herefordshire in abt 1820.

Thomas was a carpenter/ joiner. He lived most of his life in Ross. He and Mary had two children namely Mary Ann Durham born abt 1855, and Alexander George
Durham born abt 1855. By the time of the 1871 census, the children were living with a family by the name of Jordan, in Gloucester.  It appears that at some point
Mary Ann was adopted by the same family.

I do not know what happened to Thomas' wife, she was certainly alive in 1864 when Thomas' will was proved in Hereford.  She may have died, or even fell on hard times and was un-able to keep the children.

If anyone has any information, I would be pleased to hear from you. Also anyone with knowledge of the Durham family on the Gloucester area.

Many thanks.

Family History Programs, Tree Organisation, Presentation / Ancestry and FTM
« on: Monday 05 July 10 12:28 BST (UK)  »
I have an old version of FTM and wish to upgrade to the latest version. I would like to use the trees I have on Ancestry and download them to this new version of FTM.  Does anyone have an experience on doing this?  Plus on Ancestry I have more than one tree,  is it possible on FTM to be used in the same way.

Family History Beginners Board / Lewis - Watkins Family - Gloucester
« on: Tuesday 01 June 10 23:31 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have an info on The Lewis-Watkins Family, from Gloucester.

My Gt Grandfather was Charles Lewis- Watkins born abt 1830, Monmouth. He married Harriet Morris,  born Newnham on Severn. They lived at Kingsholm, Gloucester.

According to family gossip, Charles' first wife was called Margaret.  She might have been a Lewis. But that's only a guess.  CHarles' father was called Henry Watkins, occupation Staymaker.

I have more or less given up. IF anyone has a clue, or needs more info, let me know.

Thankyou

Family History Beginners Board / Radway Family - Filkins and Broadwell,
« on: Tuesday 01 June 10 23:07 BST (UK)  »
I am researching my partners family.  To date one branch is The Radway Family, who lived in Filkins and Broadwell, Gloucestershire.  Through the census returns, I have managed to make some headway.

Alice Radway married William Peart 6.6.1873 Coln St Dennis. Alice was born in Filkins.  This is my partners direct ancestor.

However on looking at records, I have found that a Thomas Radway, was the last person to be whipped in stocks. Thomas was known as "Old Fielding". The person who carried out the whipping was the local miller, a man by the name of Purbrick.

Another Radway I believe called John also from Filkins/ Broadwell,  was part of The Swing Rioters, which went round destroying farm machinery.  In 1831 he was deported to Tazmania for seven years.

Anyone with info on The Radways would be gratefully received, as per usual more and more  Radways keep  popping up..

Many thanks

Barbara
