There is an Aitken tree with Margaret Aitken m. Boyle, but I have Margaret Boyle Aitken m. Alexander Kyle in the Dunedin area.  Do these people belong in that tree?  Were Thomas (tea merchant) and Jane her parents and where did they come from?

Fermanagh / Church of Ireland in Lack, Co Fermanagh
« on: Thursday 02 June 16 06:41 BST (UK)  »
Charles Maurice Stack was said to be the vicar of this church 1851-1877 before becoming the Bishop of Clogher.  Charles Maurice England was born about 1854 and should probably have been baptized in Seagoe or Knocknamuckley, Co Armagh.  The record is not there.  The man did not list his father on his marriage record.  He is not listed in an 1857 census for Knocknamuckley, but lives there after his marriage in 1880. He appears to be from a Co. Armagh family named England, but no Co Armagh England is named anything remotely like Charles or Maurice.  Would anyone be able to see if he was named after Rev Stack and baptized at the Lack church?  If so,  I would be very interested in knowing who his parents were and why they might have been there.

William Graham m. Martha Caldwell 1871 and had dau Jane b 1878 and Thomas b, 1874. They are in the Derry/Londonderry census 1901 census,  Possibly Thomas and Mary are in the 1911 census with children John Alexander, William, Martha, Robert, Thomas, Hugh Hunter, and David.  John has a middle name of Alexander, Lancelot and Laurence at different times.   John married Maggie Jane Doak in 1919 and had 3 children probably born in Belfast.

For Sale / Wanted / Events / Irish People, Irish Linen
« on: Tuesday 29 November 11 18:57 GMT (UK)  »
Irish People, Irish Linen is a just published  book by Kathleen Curtis Wilson.  It is about the  history of the Irish linen industry with in depth discussions of the development of the linen trade from both a social and economic viewpoint, of the  workers' experiences including many. many personal recollections, poetry and songs, and of the international connections.

Several mills such as Sion, Bessbrook, and  Mossley are spotlighted as well as development of lace and embroidery firms.  Weaving terms and factory job terms are clearly explained.  The pictures are gorgeous.  The book is expensive at about $50 US, but definitely well worth it.

Down / Menabilly McCready
« on: Thursday 28 July 11 18:08 BST (UK)  »
I am finding the Menabilly  surname on a list of Knocknamuckley church goers.    There is a listing for
John b 1792 who married a Catholic lady not mentioned,
John, a weaver b. 1836 m.Catherine,  and
James a weaver b 1807 m Mary Ann whose dau Mary Jane married a Wallace and also  has children Richard b 1845, Hugh 1843, James 1840, William 1847.

One of the Johns is  a sexton and his dau Elizabeth married a Boyce and also Jacob Pollock while dau Jane married William Sloan.  James also  has a dau Jane who married John Calvert.

Out of curiosity did this family change their name?  To McCready?   I found McCready ladies married to a James Boyce,  a Jacob Pollock, and a William Sloan.

Down / Doaks near Ballynagarrick
« on: Monday 02 May 11 18:52 BST (UK)  »
I am confused by the information I am seeing and won't be able to order information for a while.  Would anyone advise me on an approach?

Joseph Doak Sr died 1898 per PRONI and his will mentions Joseph (Sarah) as one of his executors.  There is no civil record of the death on familysearch to give the age.  Is Sarah the mother or the wife of Joseph (Sarah)?  Sarah says she was born about 1851 to 1856, she said she was widowed in 1901,  and she died  in 1909.

Alexander Doak b May 12, 1879 (m. Hannah Martha Finlay) is the son of Joseph Doak and Sarah per the family's obituary.  Sister Elizabeth Doak b. abt 1886 (m. John Terry) also claims Joseph and Sarah are parents.  She is living with widowed Sarah in 1901.  I can not find a marriage civil record  for Alex or for Sarah or for Joseph marrying a Sarah.

Son Joseph and William J. were living in Ireland in 1942 per an obituary.  Son Joseph should be in the census and about 30 or less.   He appears to be the illegitimate? son born to a Sarah Doak in 1866 (no father listed in civil but a Livingston listing suggests  John Livingston).  He appears to have married Mary Jane Wilson and is the only reasonably aged Joseph (Valentine Doak also had a son Joseph of the same age, though.).

Dau Sarah Jane b. 1875 had married Samuel James Boyce in 1895 and lived in Ireland.  There is a civil record of her marriage.   Possibly this is the Sarah Jane b. 1871.  Sarah's son Samuel Edmund b. July 13, 1882 is the only child who definitely has a birth certificate.  He was boarding with Martha (Doak) McCutcheon in 1901 and claimed she was his mother when emigrating. Martha  looks like the dau of Valentine Doak.  One of Martha's descendents was checking Samuel Edmund's baptism record, I think.

If unmarried Sarah Doak had a son who is brother to the son of a married Sarah Doak, she either married a Joseph Doak or the children claimed her father as her husband.  Is a birth certificate more reliable than a marriage record? Would familysearch have all the civil records or shall I check the index to civil records?
