London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Arthur Ellis b.c.1848, London
« on: Tuesday 17 October 17 17:07 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help me with locating Arthur Ellis, other than where I have found him and perhaps identify his place of birth and birth family.

Arthur Ellis married Jane Bates, Lambeth, March 1870, 1d, 471. I was trying to avoid purchasing the  certificate, but will probably have to to hopefully obtain his father's name.

They are on the 1871 census at 27 Georges Street, St George the Martyr, Southwark, Arthur is a labourer age 22 just giving London as PoB. Jane is age 21, b.Southwark, they have a 1 year old son listed as William Eli Ellis. There is no birth registration for William Eli Ellis but there was a registration for a William Berry Bates, Lambeth, Sep. 1869, mother's MN Bates, so I suspect that Arthur Ellis was not his father.

The first known child of Arthur and Jane, also Arthur was born 1872 in Southwark, they went on to have a total of 9 children together all registered in the St Saviour district although at least 4 died in infancy. Jane died in St Saviour age 38 in 1888.

Arthur is on the 1891 census at 11 Lemon Street, Southwark age 42, a widower, with the 3 youngest surviving children, Walter 9, Anne 6 and Mark (I think that he was registered as Martin) 4. Walter I believe died soon after and the other 2 can be found on the 1901 census.

I cannot see Arthur after 1891 nor find a definite death. Neither can I find any trace of the family in 1881 although there is no evidence that they left Southwark. I cannot find any evidence of a birth for Arthur in London or Surrey around 1848 nor any trace on the 1851 or 1861 census, I have eliminated all the Arthur Ellis births and census entries that I have found. In 1871 Arthur has a neighbour James Ellis of a similar age born Whitechapel, I cannot find any family connection to that person.

If anyone can offer any ideas I will be delighted.

The Common Room / 1911 Census
« on: Sunday 26 February 12 12:55 GMT (UK)  »
I have recently had a posting deleted because I quoted from the 1911 census. I have been referred to an Ancient Posting done in 2009 that 'Find My Past' have a copyright over the 1911 census for a limited period.

Isn't it time that someone on this site got up to date and realised that this limited period has expired and that other people have access to the 1911 census. I have no contract with 'Find My Past', my source is entirely separate therefore I see no reason why they can dictate to me what I can write or for any administrators on this site can act in the  name of 'Find My Past' without my permission to delete  or censor my postings on anything other than public decency.

Until I receive confirmation that this will not happen again I will no longer assist other researchers requiring help on this site.

Suffolk / Emma PETCH b.1842
« on: Wednesday 18 October 06 15:20 BST (UK)  »
I have one of those mysteries which I am having difficulty resolving and think it might help if I tell you all to see what wisdom may come forward.

Emma Petch was born in 1842, reg. Thingoe, MarQ,13,470. She was the daughter of William Petch and Elizabeth Marsh. A baptism is recorded on the IGI, (not a reliable source), at Hempton? (could be Ampton), Suffolk 19 Jun1842. On the 1851 census she is with her parents at Out Northgate, Bury St Edmunds, her place of birth is shown as Culford. I cannot be certain but in 1861 I think she is a servant in Mildenhall but her PoB is down as Fornham, her parents are living in Northgate Road, BSE, the nearest villages to this area are the Fornhams.

Free BMD shows a marriage of an Emma Petch, BSE District, DecQ1868, 4a 980. The only other name on this reference is Henry Mayfield. The 1871 census shows a Henry Mayfield, age 29, a railway porter, b.BSE with a wife Emma age 30, b.Ampton, Suffolk, lodging at 40 Station Street, West Ham, Essex.

There is no trace of Henry Mayfield on the 1881 or 1891 census but there is in 1881 an Emma Mayfield, age 40, b. Ampton, married, living with a John & Amelia Melton (miss spelt as Metton), at 4 Woodlea Road London, but she is shown as a daughter, Amelia was also born in Ampton. The 1891 still shows her as their daughter, now living at 40 Cruickshank Road, West Ham.

My problem is, is this person Emma Petch, if so Where is Henry and why is she claiming to be the daughter of this couple? If not where is the real Emma Petch.

I would welcome all comments and suggestions.
