Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 1861 occupation
« on: Sunday 12 February 23 10:58 GMT (UK)  »
Suggestion please on the head of the family Joseph Brown, a cotton mill worker. First line. Looks like retired, but that doesn't seem right.

Other census:
1841 Cotton weaver
1851 Sizer
1871 Cotton rover

1861

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Transcribe and translate French document
« on: Friday 03 February 23 09:32 GMT (UK)  »
Could a kind soul transcribe and translate this for me. Three parts. I've put it through Google translate but it doesn't read correctly. It relates to the execution of Manon Jeanne, Baronne de Bois de Vauban.
It's the best quality image I can provide.

1851 census
Class: HO107; Piece: 2263; Folio: 533; Page: 4

Dies in 1851 so no other census to compare.

I am sure it will be a doh! moment when you tell me...

Very quick question.

I'm just self-educating myself on the Latin used in the Domesday Book. I cannot work out the full word Sep. The National Archives transcribes and translates it as 'then as now'.

I assume the crossed descender means either er or ar but not sure what the tick above means.

The title says it all. I'm researching the history of pub. I am missing information for the years 1873 to 1878. I'm looking for the full name of the licensee for the Fountain Inn or Royal Fountain Inn, Cleobury Mortimer. I know the surnames - there were two during this period, I just need their first names.

Every other date is covered thank you. Just need information covering these dates.

Edit:
Now completed. Notified by PM. Thank you contributors.

Essex Completed Lookup Requests / Doddinghurst parish register look up - COMPLETED
« on: Thursday 30 December 10 15:08 GMT (UK)  »
I have a letter dated December 1893 which refers to some wedding celebrations a few months previously in Doddinghurst Church (All Saints). No names mentioned but I know they lived on or near Kelvedon Common.

Could someone look at the 1893 wedding register and give me details of all the weddings, say March to December 1893. I anticipate that as it is a small parish there will not be that many. I have have extensive database of names and addresses and I hope I will be able to identify the couple referred to in the letter.

If there are many names, then I will not impose and will have to visit the ERO sometime.

Thanks in advance.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Dating an early colour photograph
« on: Monday 28 January 08 09:54 GMT (UK)  »
Your assistance in dating this photograph would be greatly appreciated.

It is a colour photograph which has picture framing tape attaching it to the mount so I am reluctant to disturb it. This is a scan through the glass. The mount is oval at the top.

The photograph is on a thin metal plate or glass 11cm x 8cm. There is some cracking on the back. The scan produces every scratch and mark and when viewed in real life is a lot darker than the scan. The gold watch stands out as much as it does in the scan.

I am not sure who the subject is. It may be two possible people. The subject's age would place the photograph as either circa 1905, or before 1883. It certainly does not appear to be the normal studio photograph of the late Victorian - Edwardian period. The sitter would not be a wealthy person. One was a cutler, the other a shoe maker.

Your views would be much appreciated.

Essex Completed Lookup Requests / What is this name? - Completed
« on: Friday 30 March 07 20:22 BST (UK)  »
I am currently preparing the Colchester entry for 1848 from White's Directory and have come across a shortened version of a name which I cannot identify. It is probably biblical. Any suggestions?

This is how it appears in the directory:

Temps. Biggs

Any info would be much appreciated.
