Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Date Please for this Woman
« on: Thursday 20 October 22 01:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Came across this photo in my cousin's documents but no-one in the family has any idea who she is.  There are zero markings on it and I can only assume that it was taken in Australia but could in fact be in Ireland or Scotland.

Having said that, cousin's:

- paternal grandmother emigrated Ireland to Australia 1902
- paternal grandfather born Queensland, Australia 1872 (his parents emigrated Ireland to Aust 1856)
- maternal grandparents emigrated Scotland to Australia aft 1923

Any suggestions of place or time would be helpful,

Christine.

World War One / Artists' Rifles - Alexander Welsh Mitchell
« on: Monday 21 June 21 09:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
My grandfather, Alexander Welsh Mitchell b1894 Fifeshire raised Kirriemuir, Angus, apparently served in the Artists' Rifles from c.1915 to 1918.
I've not been able to find any Attestation papers for him; possibly part of the burnt records.  It's only today that I found a newspaper snippet from Kirriemuir, 6 Sep 1918, stating he was with the Artists Rifles, wounded in action, in a hospital in England, a Private and had been with the colours for three years.
Looking into the AR, I see that during WW1 it was split into three battalions - 1/28th, the 2/28th and the 3/28th London Regiment.
So how would I go about trying to locate further information about him or his regiment?
Many thanks,
Christine.

The Common Room / familysearch.org - US Census no image
« on: Wednesday 11 March 20 04:20 GMT (UK)  »
Am I going nuts? I'm sure I have previously been able to access an image for the main US censuses, i.e. 1910, 20, 30, 40 but now it's only a transcription and page states images can be viewed at a family history centre.

Hi,
Would some kind soul please be able to look up a Legal Advertisement for me.  It is in the Rushville Republican from Rushville, Indiana · Page 7 December 23, 1930 and it's a matter of Catherine Oefelein v. Thomas Hart et al. I think it also appears on other dates but from what I can see (albeit all jumbled up) on this version, it also lists the names of the other parties (siblings in fact).
Many thanks,
Christine.

Armed Forces / UK - Deceased Soldiers Effects - Where next?
« on: Monday 08 July 19 02:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I've come across an entry on the UK, Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects, 1901-1929 for a James Dempsey who died 1901 at Commissie Drift, South Africa.

Interested to find a bit more information on him to see if he belongs to one of my Dempseys but unsure where to go next or indeed, if there are any other records that might hold further information.

He was with the 1 Highland Light Infantry, Private, Reg No. 4380.

Ta,
Christine.

Ireland / Irish RC Parish Registers - Latin
« on: Friday 14 June 19 18:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Hoping someone who has knowledge of usage of Latin in these registers might be able to assist me.

I have a marriage entry that on the NLI site is partially black and pretty much that side of the entry is illegible.  Today I was at PRONI and viewed the microfilm which was 99% clearer.

The entry reads ".... Dispensation in 4th to 4th Con. Of. ...."  Unfortunately the Catholic Church does not allow the making of copies from the microfilm without a letter from the Church which I don't have.

The abbreviation "Of." might be "af." for afinitatus meaning related through an earlier marriage of the two families.  I could not at the time make out what was after this if anything at all.  I may have misread it as two words when it may in fact just have been afinitatus.

My question is would there normally just be the one word afinitatus or would there be two words?

Sorry for such rambling but I can't find anything online to help me out.

If you want to look at the NLI image it's a marriage for William Dempsey & Rose Cleary (Latin names used) married July 9 1857, Aughnamullen West Parish, Co. Monaghan.

Many thanks,
Christine.

Hi all,

Just received an email advising that "The Attorney-General's Department is progressing a review of the approved forms made under the Marriage Act 1961 and Marriage Regulations 2017." https://www.ag.gov.au/Consultations/Pages/review-marriage-forms-noim.aspx

Apparently the proposed new form "does NOT INCLUDE provision for parents names, occupation, NOR current address of the Bride and Groom."

As my emailer stated, this is vital information for us (family researchers) and so I would encourage all family historians to submit their displeasure at this proposed change either via above link or direct to marriagecelebrantssection@ag.gov.au

SUBMISSIONS CLOSE this Sunday 28 October 2018.

Many thanks,

Having a bit of trouble understanding who are the parents and who are the sponsors on this baptism entry for Eugene on 7 March 1856 Parish of Ematris, County Monaghan.  It reads: Eugenis & Maria Duffy par Michael McGiven & Anna Clerry spon Eugene bap J.K.

Hoping someone can help,
Christine.
