Hi
I have found an ancestor William Dixon on census records.

I would like to find a marriage and baptism and possibly take it back to his parents

I have him on the 1861 census living with wife Ellen  and 5 children.

They are in West Derby
Household schedule number 48
Piece 2703

Many thanks for any further info on this person

The Common Room / finding Ellen's parents
« on: Monday 12 February 24 22:32 GMT (UK)  »
hi

I have an ancestor called Ellen Molyneux Roberts at birth.  I have found her birth in 1875 and on her baptism record (1876) her parents are Thomas Roberts and Ann Roberts.

I have found them in the 1881 census where Ellen is 5 and with two younger siblings William and Thomas. (piece 3644, folio 88, page 44)

I can also find Ellen in the 1911 census as she marries John James Howard in 1903.

I am struggling from here.  I cannot locate her in 1891 and 1901.  There is a servant in 1891 age 15 called Ellen Roberts but I would never know if this was her.

More importantly and to get to the point...... I can't get any further with her parents Thomas and Sarah.  In the Liverpool area there are lots of Thomas Roberts marrying someone called Ann.  I suppose the way forward is to order the birth cert for Ellen?

Any help appreciated in taking this line further back than I have here

Many thanks

Technical Help / Rootsmagic
« on: Saturday 03 February 24 20:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I am getting back into my research after a loooooong break.

Used to use FTM but it won't open on my computer.  Anyhow, I have downloaded the RootsMagic essentials to try.

Is it possible to print out one huge family tree using this software - or if i purchase the full version.  Unsure whether to purchase FTM again or try RootsMagic.

I did search but couldn't find this answer

Many thanks

Family History Beginners Board / Help finding a marriage
« on: Sunday 15 November 20 20:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I have found what I think are my ancestors on the 1911 census:
William McPherson and Jessie Lupton (I know this is the maiden name from my nana's birth certificate, these are her parents)
I cannot find a marriage of William and Jessie ( It is possible they were not married )

I have been told that my nana had an older sister born in 1906 called Ida (father unknown), I have not corroborated this yet as a fact.  And she is not here on the census.

I just wondered if anyone more experienced may be able to find a marriage if there was one.

Many thanks

Edited to add:
They had their daughter Jenny McPherson born Dec 1913 in Rusholme, South Manchester (my nana)

The 1911 census has them in Manchester.

On the 1901 census I have found Jessie Lupton age 14 with her family in Gorton, Lancashire

Stirlingshire / Farmer: Buchanan, 1951
« on: Friday 13 November 20 21:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I have found an ancestor on the 1851 census living in Buchanan.  Address is what looks like 37 Auchmar.  He is described as having 700 acres.

I am wanting to find out more about this; possibly a map of the area or information on farmers in general at this time.

I am not sure where to look so any information would be appreciated.

Many thanks
Sara

Hi
I wondered if anyone would be able to help me locate a family in the 1911 census?
I have looked and I'm not getting anywhere:

I am looking for a family
Father John Jackson
Mother Sarah Jane Jackson(nee Smith)

children:
Jimmy (maybe James?)
John
Annie born 1906 Tynemouth
George
Sarah
Freddie
Tom
Harry

The concrete details I have are that Annie was born in Tynemouth in 1906 and married Samuel Hulmston in Birkenhead in 1942.

Her mother Sarah Jane was also living in Birkenhead during the war as I have her ration book.  So I am assuming the family moved to the Wirral but I don't know when.

I am pretty sure that John Jackson and sarah Jane Smith were married in 1899 Tynemouth.

Not all of the children would have been born before the 1911 census but these are all the children I believe they had (family member remembers then all!)

Thankyou if you decide to have a look ;D

The Common Room / 'Lunatic' asylums
« on: Friday 06 November 20 21:24 GMT (UK)  »
About 15 years ago when doing research, I found out my gg-grandmother was in asylums in the 1920s.
I contacted some record offices and one was able to supply me with an admissions record for my ancestor and some letters written by family members.

I remember another record office flatly refusing - saying they are sure my ancestor wouldn't want anyone seeing the documents.
I decided then that I would revisit this in the 2020s as it would be 100 years and perhaps more likely I could find more information.

So my links from back then no longer work so I wonder if anyone would know where I could start looking at this.

Her name was Ada Roughton and she was born in watford in 1872 and married alfred tompkins in watford in 1894.  they had 3 children and alfred died in 1902.  i know that the children then went into an orphanage as i have the certificates.

I went to the National archives and trawled through registers to find her name.  By the time she was in the asylums she was remarried so was then Ada Seymour.  On the admission register she is described as having melancholia which I presume would be depression as we know it today .

Thanks in advance for any information
