Wiltshire Completed Lookup Requests / George GWYNN and Mary Ann HOBBS
« on: Tuesday 12 December 06 16:43 GMT (UK)  »
Something unexpected has cropped up, andI would be very grateful if anyone could help me find out more.

Mary Ann Hobbs married Peter Withers in about 1828 - two years later he was tranported to Tasmania for taking part in the Swing Riots.  They had at least two children (twin girls), possibly more.

However, it now turns out that Mary Ann had three children before her marriage to Peter (Martha Gwynn Hobbs, bap 12/8/21, Mary Gwynn Hobbs bap 16/3/23, and George Gwynn Hobbs bapt 27/7/27.  What is most interesting is that she had a fourth child, Evan Gwynn Hobbs, born 1835, died 1836, so the relationship with the father continued over quite a long period and after Peter's transportation.  The eldest girl, Martha, showed a George Gwynn as being her father on her marriage certificate.

I would be fascinated to know who George Gwynn was and why he and Mary Ann didn't or couldn't get married.

Mary Ann (still known as Mary Ann Withers) was living in London in 1851 with the married Martha as a neighbour.  I don't know where she was in 1841.

If anyone could help me with this one it would be much appreciated.

Berkshire Lookup Requests / George and Joseph PALMER of Thatcham
« on: Friday 01 December 06 10:17 GMT (UK)  »
I've today received my great-grandparents' marriage certificate, and was pleased to see that George's father was indeed Joseph Palmer, labourer.  I know that this family appears in censuses (though never with George at home, which is why I couldn't be sure he belonged to them) so I already know many of the names of the family.

The certificate showed the occupation of the bride, Martha, as Labourer.  I would have expected servant - do you think she worked on a farm or were there any other occupations for girls which would have been described as Labourer?

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / 1891 cencus - George PALMER
« on: Wednesday 22 November 06 19:00 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find George Palmer in 1891.  He was born in Kensington in 1869, and I believe he would have been in the Royal Navy in 1891 - not sure what happened re censuses for those on ships.

Any information gratefully received.

Wiltshire Lookup Requests / looking for Thomas HUNTER after 1841
« on: Wednesday 22 November 06 18:11 GMT (UK)  »
I'd be grateful if anyone could help me find what happened to Thomas Hunter.  He appears in the 1841 census living in Ramsbury with parents Richard and Hannah and sister Martha - his age is shown as 15.

By 1851, Martha was married and living in London.  Hannah too was living in London (presumably Richard had died) and is shown on the census as Sister.  Also shown was a Mary Ellen Hunter, aged 2, born in Ramsbury, whose relationship to the Head of Household was 'Nepw daughter' - presumably Nephew's daughter.  So I don't know if she was Thomas's daughter - there is no mention of Thomas or the little girl's mother.

Any suggestions will be read with interest!

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / St Giles - what part of London?
« on: Tuesday 21 November 06 18:14 GMT (UK)  »
I want to order the birth certificate of someone who I understand to have been born in Kensington or Notting Hill.

I've found on BMD what could be the one but the registration district is shown as St Giles  Before I part with my hard earned cash and pay for the certificate, is it likely to be the right one?

I'd be grateful for any information regarding the SHEPHERD family in 1871. I believe they lived in Kensington or Notting Hill.

Head of household was CHARLES SHEPHERD - Brickmaker, aged about 47
Wife MARY aged about 49
Children Charles, Frederick, Mary, and possibly a very young Ellen.

I would like to know if there were any other children in the family, and whether Charles and Mary were born in London.

Many thanks

One Name Studies: N to S / PALMER family
« on: Monday 20 November 06 18:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hello - is anyone researching the Palmer family?  Originally from Thatcham, Berks, my great-grandfather George moved to London around 1850.  His children were John, William, Thomas, Joseph, Eleanor, Richard and George.

Berkshire Lookup Requests / Parish Register search - George PALMER
« on: Sunday 19 November 06 18:19 GMT (UK)  »
I am hoping to find the names of the parents of my great grandfather, George Palmer, born in Thatcham around 1826.

It has been suggested by Newfy that his parents could be Joseph (c1796) and Charlotte (1801).

If anyone has access to any records which would show if this is correct, it would be another piece in the jigsaw!

Many thanks

Berkshire Lookup Requests / George PALMER - Thatcham
« on: Sunday 19 November 06 17:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone - I'm wondering if anyone can help me find any information on censuses or elsewhere re my great grandfather George PALMER.  I have found him on the 1851 census living in London, married to Martha.  He gives his place of birth as THATCHAM - his two eldest sons, William and John, were also born in Thatcham - John was 2 in 1851 so they must have left Berkshire between 1849 and 1851.  George would have been born about 1826.  I would be interested to find out anything about his family, particularly names of parents and occupation of father.

Many thanks
