Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Hull policemen?
« on: Wednesday 01 April 09 09:54 BST (UK)  »
Having seen some posts on here about policemen, I am hoping someone can help me with this photograph.

It belonged to my grandparents and I thought that it showed relatives/friends of my grandfather who was a policeman in Manchester, but apparently the helmet badge doesn't belong to Manchester and Hull was suggested.

Any help would be appreciated

US Completed Requests / 1910 census
« on: Thursday 15 January 09 12:32 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to track down when my grandfather, William Rhodes, was in the USA.

According to family lore he saw Halley's comet while staying with his brother John Rhodes, possibly in Rhode Island. That would have been in 1910.

I have looked on the free index and found a likely candidate -
William Rhodes, born about 1892, living in Providence.
He was born in Blackburn, Lancashire, and should have been living with John and Margaret Rhodes and their son John, all from Blackburn.

If anyone can confirm this, it would be very helpful

Northumberland / Luke Pearson, Newcastle
« on: Monday 17 November 08 10:35 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to trace a transcription of a monumental inscription for Luke Pearson, a road surveyor, who died on 29 Jan 1843,  and was buried in Newcastle General Cemetery on 2 Feb 1843.

Unfortunately he was buried in the area of the cemetery where the headstones were cleared when a road widening scheme was proposed. This didn't go ahead, but I have been unable to find where the headstones went.  I am hoping that there may be a record of the transcription somewhere.

From the 1841 I know he was born about 1788, not in county, but have been unable to trace his earlier life, before his marriage in Alston to Jane Little on 26 Nov 1828, when he was about 40years old.

Any help appreciated

Norfolk / John Hammond Joyce
« on: Thursday 08 November 07 16:45 GMT (UK)  »
I have come to a halt in my searches about my g.g. grandfather and am hoping that someone can help.

The family knew him as John Hammond, but when I found his marriage certificate he is shown as being John Hammond Joyce, son of Robert Hammond.

In the census returns 1851 to 1891 he is shown as John Hammond, born about 1835 in Billingford, Norfolk.

In the 1841 census, I think this might be him –
HO107/763/2/12/18 – Bawdeswell, Norfolk
Name         Age   Occupation   Birth Place
Mary Joice      30                      Norfolk
John Joice       6     Scholar        Norfolk
William Joice      1                       Norfolk
Robert Hammond    25     Ag labourer     Norfolk
Alice Buchan          70   Ind                Norfolk

I also have a marriage certificate for a Robert Hammond (Labourer, father John Hammond) and Mary Josh (spinster, no father listed) on 1 Nov 1844 at Worthing, Norfolk, which may fit with the later census entries –

1851 Worthing, Norfolk
HO107/1825/501/7
Name          Related   Age   Occupation        Birth Place
Robert Hammond    Head           39     Ag labourer         Worthing, Norfolk
Mary Hammond     Wife              41                         Gately, Norfolk
John Hammond      Son              15       Tan Yard Servant     Billingford, Norfolk
Robert Hammond     Son               8       Scholar         Bawdeswell, Norfolk
Ann Hammond       Dau                5        Scholar          Worthing, Norfolk
Elizabeth Hammond Dau              3                       Worthing, Norfolk

A few years ago I wrote to the Norfolk Record Office and they did a search of the baptism registers of Billingford near Dearham for 1834 – 1838, but could not find an entry for John Hammond/Joyce.

Any ideas about where I go from here would be greatly appreciated.

Armed Forces / 13th Hussars
« on: Tuesday 27 February 07 15:58 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching my great grandfather's army service, and have found some information but need to know where to look next.

I have a copy of his attestation, as follows -
Thomas Plaxton, No 1864, 13th Hussars, 16th January 1879 at Canterbury,

and his discharge, as follows -
Thomas Plaxton, No. 1864, 13th Hussars, rank Squadron Sergt. Major, on 31 Jan 1903 at Buckingham.

How do I find what he did in between?

I know he married (I have the certificate) and had children who were born in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Cork and Belfast.

Are there any records that give the deployments within the UK?

Canada / Fanny Bradley nee Gainford
« on: Monday 12 February 07 11:00 GMT (UK)  »
I have been researching my family history for a few years now, and I would love to sort out a family story about my great grandmother’s sister.

According to family lore she died in childbirth in the Klondike.

Her marriage certificate shows the following –
4th March 1899 at Christ Church Mayfair in the Parish of St George Hanover Sq. London
William Bradley, age 32, bachelor, Leut. R N R married
Fanny Gainford, age 29, spinster.

I have found William Bradley in the 1901 Census living as a boarder in Liverpool and shown as a widower. I have searched the GRO indexes in the UK, Consular records and Marine death records - no success.

I have no idea whether the Klondike story is true, or why a Leut. in the Royal Navy Reserve should be in the Klondike with his new wife.

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
