Hi all,

Could anyone please tell me when the army photo might have been taken? Also, in the second photo - can I have your views on whether you think it's the same guy as in the army photo? Obviously taken later on...

Thanks - any help much appreciated!

Armed Forces / Can anyone tell which regiment from this photo?
« on: Friday 30 November 12 15:24 GMT (UK)  »
No idea what age this photo is or what regiment the man is in - I've been passed a family photo and no-one knows who is in the pics. Just says Gravesend on it.

My hunch is that it might just be my great-great grandmother and her first husband who was in the 24th Reg of Foot. Would have been c1871

Anyone any knowledge/ideas about which regiment the guy might be in as my own hunches are really not that reliable?! And I'd hate to suggest stuff to family to get their hopes up just to find out I'm hideously wrong.

Any help much appreciated.

Cheers

Hazel

Essex Lookup Requests / Census/parish record look up request please for Waltham Abbey
« on: Thursday 28 August 08 13:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I've found nothing for the family listed below after a lot of searching, and was wondering if someone more astute than me could have a quick look?

George Frederick Cooper, born 03/03/1854 Paradise Row, Waltham Abbey, Essex: to John Cooper (a carpenter) and Matilda Smith

I can't find a marriage in the indexes for the parents, apart from an unlikely one in Suffolk, that isn't right, and I can't find the family in the censuses. I found George in Woolwich with his wife in 1881 but nothing earlier, and definitely nothing for John and Matilda anywhere. Perhaps there is a marriage in the registers in Waltham Abbey?

If anyone could have a quick look I'd be very grateful. Thanks  :)

Devon Lookup Requests / 1851 Census look-up for Elizabeth PIKE in Devon
« on: Thursday 21 February 08 13:47 GMT (UK)  »
Come to a total dead end finding a relative and need help please!

1851: I'm looking for Elizabeth Pike, the widow of Joseph Pike.
Elizabeth was born. c1791, Devon.

In 1841, Joseph and Elizabeth are living in Milton, Buckland Monachorum. Joseph, a farm labourer, dies in 1844 and I can't find his wife, Elizabeth in 1851. I can't find a death for her that matches either, as the seeming match on the BMD for 1847 Tavistock is for the wife of a Richard Pike (a waggoner).

Can anyone please have a look and see if Elizabeth's lurking anywhere? She could be living anywhere nearby, as a lodger, or possibly living with her children Mary (Batten) b 1816, or Elizabeth (Barnett) b 1821, both born Buckland/Tavistock area.

Thank you!!!! :) :)

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Woolwich census look up request
« on: Friday 08 February 08 14:04 GMT (UK)  »
Please could some kind soul look up some censuses for a family I think may be related to me? Would be so excited if they were, I've been struggling with my Cooper family for ages!!! And it is potentially my last chance to see if I can track further relatives down...

In 1881 census says living at 3 St James Place Woolwich

George F Cooper age 26 b. Waltham Abbey
Bridget T Cooper age 21 b. Ireland
John Cooper age 6m b. Ireland

If anyone could have a quick look up of 1891 and 1901 censuses for them I'd be very grateful indeed...

Thanks!

Kent / Photo taken in Chatham mid 1880s - Anyone recognise these people?
« on: Tuesday 23 October 07 17:00 BST (UK)  »
Been given a copy of this pic from a family member but we have no idea who the people are. Possibly surname of Beresford or Woolnough (which would tie in with my family) but have absolutely no idea.

Would have been taken 1880s in Chatham, Kent, judging by the clothes.

If anyone recognises these people I'd love to hear from you.

And if anyone has any suggestions of other good sites that I could post it on I'd be very interested in that too.

Oxfordshire Lookup Requests / Swyncombe parish record/census look-up please
« on: Wednesday 17 October 07 13:42 BST (UK)  »
Could someone please look and see if they can find a birth or an 1841 census for a Charles Appleby born in Swyncombe, Oxon around 1823ish? I can't find anything for a birth there around this time, although late censuses all suggest a birth date of approx 1823. I would love to be able to trace him back a generation further.

Charles states he was born in Swyncombe. He lived, however, in Bix most of his life. He had a wife Sarah who he married in 1848 and all his kids were born in Bix.

If it's any help, his childrens names (could tie in with parents) are Thomas, Charles, Frances, Eleanor, Mary, Sophie, Ann, William, Stephen, Richard and Harry.

Thanks :-)

Herts Completed Lookup Requests / Census Lookup Requests - GARRATTS/MADDAMS
« on: Monday 30 July 07 11:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi.

Wondering if anyone can please help me find the following families in Herts?

Thomas Samuel Garratt was married to a Florence Mansfield, and I found them in 1901 living in Tatlin Town, Wareside. He was an agricultural farm labourer, working from home, born c1876 at Gravel Pit Cottages. I haven't managed to find their entry in 1891, so if anyone could find that, it would be great.

I found Thomas' father in 1881, a Henry Garratt married to an Eliza, living in Gravel Pit Cottages in Wareside, Herts.

Henry married in 1872, and I'm trying to find him with his family from 1871 backwards. Census suggests he was born in Tatlin Town around 1853. He's an Agricultural Labourer.

And if anyone can find the following Maddams people, I'd be really grateful...

William Samuel maddams, a bricklayer, in 1901 census was living at Mill Road, Hertford St. John. His parents were Thomas and Mary Ann Morrell, married in 1880. I've found them going back to 1881 - when they were living in Ayton's Alley, Hertford St. John. At this point Thomas was a malster, and afterwards a corporation roadman. (Thomas Maddams born in Hertford c1858) If anyone can find Thomas from 1871 backwards with his family, I'd be really grateful.

Thank you

Hazel  :)
