Sligo / Sligo Birth 1886
« on: Monday 13 May 19 16:20 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

One of my ancestors was born at Mount Shannon, Parish of Calry, Sligo in Oct. 1886.  I have tried to find out if Mount Shannon is a house or hospital, or area of Sligo.  Does anyone know if Mount Shannon is an actual building as I cannot find an area of Sligo with that name.  Many thanks

Hello, I recently bought a copy of Mr. J. Herlihy's book 'A History and Genealogical Guide to the RIC' and am now trying to obtain a copy of his other book, an Alphabetical List of Officers and Men.  Unfortunately, this book does not seem to be available at the moment.  I was hoping to see if my grandfather Joseph Orr is listed in it and if there is any information about him.  He joined the Force in 1886 at Armagh and his RIC number was 51846.  I wondered if anyone may have a copy of the Alphabetical List and if so, if they would be kind enough to have a look and see if my ancestor is listed and if anything is written about him.  Any information would be really helpful for some research I am doing.  With many thanks, Carol

Australia / Sydney NSW Marriage 1931: Mary PATES and William TAYLOR
« on: Saturday 28 March 15 15:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hello there

My ancestor Mary Ellen Pates is in the 1911 English Census.  I've been told she emigrated to Australia later that same year.  I found details of a marriage for a Mary E. Pates to William G. Taylor for 1931 but am not sure if this would be the same person as there seem to be several people named Pates.  I wondered if anyone would be able to find out any details about this marriage such as Mary's father's name.  I'm a bit wary of obtaining the actual marriage certificate as yet in case it's the wrong person and wondered if your Look-Ups service would cover my request.  Any information would be very gratefully received.
Many thanks

Armagh / Armagh Registry Office
« on: Tuesday 20 January 15 12:02 GMT (UK)  »
Hello there

I have found an ancestor who married at the Register Office, Armagh, in Dec. 1858.  Does anyone know if this would have been a normal occurrence for Ireland in 1858?  All the marriages I have found so far in my family research have taken place in a church.  The bridegroom in this instance was a widower by the name of Choughan or Chaughan.  I have not been able to find any trace of this name in the censuses etc. despite looking at variants of the name.  Has anyone ever heard of this name before?

Many thanks for any help

Regards
Carol

Antrim / Finaghy in 1950
« on: Wednesday 10 December 14 10:01 GMT (UK)  »

Hello there

I am trying to find out who lived at 2 Ormonde Avenue, Finaghy, in 1949/1950.  This is the address where my grandfather died in 1950 but I've always believed his home was in the Cliftonville Road area of Belfast, as this is where his wife died in 1968.  I'm wondering if the Finaghy address was maybe that of a family relative as I have heard the place name of Finaghy mentioned in the family.  If anyone has a street directory for Finaghy in 1949 to 1950 I wondered if it would be possible for them to do a look up for the name of the family at 2 Ormonde Avenue at that time.  It would fill a gap in my family research.

Many thanks for any help

Lancashire / Parish Church, Liverpool
« on: Thursday 10 July 14 19:06 BST (UK)  »
Hello there

One of my ancestors married in Liverpool in 1879.  The marriage certificate says that the church where the ceremony took place was  ' The Parish Church, Liverpool in the County of Lancaster'.  Does anyone know which church this would have been in 1879 and where it was, and if it is still in existence?  Thanks for any information

Antrim / Linen occupations
« on: Monday 03 March 14 14:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hello there,

Does anyone know what the job of Linen Winding Master would have entailed in 19th century Belfast?  Would he have been in charge of people or in charge of the machinery itself?  I have tried looking on the web but cannot find a suitable category that answers my query.

Any help would be much appreciated.  Thanks
Carol

Antrim / Occupations
« on: Tuesday 04 February 14 14:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

one of my Belfast ancestors is described as a Smith on his marriage certificate of 1869 but in the censuses he is a Linen Winding Master.  Does anyone know what this latter occupation would entail and if it's possible for a Smith to become a winding master.  I'm presuming the term Smith refers to dealing with iron or metal and does not mean blacksmith but am not sure. Thanks for any information

Australia / Beattie and Bartley marriage 1896
« on: Sunday 14 July 13 09:49 BST (UK)  »
Hello there

My ancestor was Samuel Beattie born in Co. Tyrone, Ireland in 1865.  He emigrated to Tasmania.  I have found an online record of a marriage between a Samuel Beattie and Frances Bartley which took place in  1896 in Victoria.  I would like to obtain a copy of this marriage certificate to verify if it is the same Samuel Beattie as my ancestor but am not sure how to go about this.  Does anyone know if I can apply for and receive a copy of the marriage certificate online?

Thanks for any assistance
Carol
