I have found on free reg a possible baptism at Monmore Green Primitive Methodist for one of my ancestors

Emma Thomas 21st April 1864 parents William Thomas Occupation Miner and Mother Lusey

The spelling of the mother has thrown me as I have her named as Lucy.. Does anyone have a copy of the baptism records for Monmore Green Primitive Methodist if it would give any more info..

Her brother Allen Thomas was baptised at High Street Primitive Bilston 20 april 1869

Were these two churches the same type as in Non Confirmists?

Many thanks Jan

Staffordshire / Where will i find divorce records?
« on: Monday 03 August 09 14:03 BST (UK)  »
My great grandmother Lucy Pearson married Samuel Pearson in 1858
    Bilston, Staffordshire, Wolverhampton
    free BMD 1858 q3 185

she went on to marry William Thomas in 1862
ICG register BMD Q3 1862 west bromwich volume 6b page 783

I have two choices of Samuel Thomas born in Staffordshire - one was in prison in 1861 who was then deported to oz and the other one was living with his sister and her husband listed as married in 1861

so did she divorce one the one living with the sister? Would there be record of the divorce?

If she was married to the one who was sent to Oz would there still be a record of the divorice?

There must have been some kind of divorce to allow her to marry my gt gt gt grandfather in 1862..

This is confusing the hell out of me :-\

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Henry Stanton - Firewood cutter
« on: Monday 03 November 08 21:30 GMT (UK)  »
I am hoping someone with some historical knowledge will be able to answer these questions

my gt gt grandfather Henry Stanton(staunton ) born 1845 westminister, london is listed on quite a few census as a firewood cutter as was two of his sons. RG11; Piece: 105; Folio: 86; Page: 44;

Q1 : was a firewood cutter a proper profession in the 1880's or did it mean he scrapped a living together selling wood from door to door?

It is very sad because his wife died in 1884 and their two daughters were shipped out to Manchester aged 9 & 11 as servants - Lousia Stanton was my gt grandmother and she was placed in a local church as a servant aged 9,  her sister maria was placed with a local landowner in worsley.

Q2 Who would of found her this place as a servant in Manchester and why so far from her family in London, would there be any records of these placements?

Henry seems to have kept his sons with him as they were older and the youngest son Fredrick lived with his grandmother until he was 16.

I have shed a tear imagining my gt grandmother losing her mother, to then lose her father and brothers because she was placed in Manchester so far from her family at such a young age, i think it must have been through a church but how this worked i do not know where to look

Many thanks
Jano

Montgomeryshire / lanfyllin Workhouse,
« on: Sunday 05 October 08 01:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

I have just discovered one of my ancestors was born in the Lanfyllin Workhouse in 1845, he is Timthoy Thomas and his mother was Hannah Thomas, looks like she had him out of wedlock
does anyone have any details of the workhouse in 1845 that might give me an idea why she had him in the work house..Hannah was born around 1826 Llandrinio, Montgomeryshire, Wales, her father was William Thomas married to Catherine Pyrce..

(gadget... I am getting closer to breaking down my brick wall.. Hannah Thomas is the sister of my missing Richard Thomas born 1817)

Thanks from Jan in cold, windy Manchester

The Common Room / Help searching abroad
« on: Friday 12 September 08 22:17 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone has access to records in the usa &  Australia.. I have found a sister for my gt gt grandfather but her and her husband disappear off the census after 1881 and she might be a clue to the birth place of my gt gt grandfather

1861 census Class: HO107; Piece: 2021; Folio: 683; Page: 30

This says thomas thomas but when you look at the text is is a girl and it is Hannah

Then i found her in 1881 with her husband Benjamin Clarke: RG11; Piece: 4588; Folio: 102; Page: 45

They are in featherstone with some of the other members of my family (the other side of the family is confirmed and sourced) unfortunately this census says her birthplace is unknown

I have tired all different types of spelling for Clarke but cannot find her or her husband and my only thought is that they have have gone abroad - I have a feeling Australia but i only subscibe to the basic package on ancestry and wondered if anyone could find out the info for me

I hope someone might be able to help me... I didnt know which part of the country to put this as she was born in Wales, lived in Bilston and moved to Yorkshire...lol...

Many thanks

The Common Room / Help Reading Signatures
« on: Friday 15 August 08 20:44 BST (UK)  »
Hello All

I have been missing for a while as i had hit a brick wall on tracing my "Thomas" tree, however i have finally got the marriage cert of my gt gt gt grandad  William Thomas and Lucy Thomas (nee pearson, but 1st marriage was to a samuel Thomas - no relation we think)

Can someone read the signatures of the witness's as i am hoping they may help me trace where William was in 1841/ 1851/ 1861 as it is not clear from later census where he was born, we have always thought it was in knighton wales - i now know he couldnt write so therefore he couldnt spell!!! another suggestion was it was in ruyton eleven.

I have william placed in 1871, 1881, I think he died before 1891 the family were living in swinton, pendlebury, manchester

Thank you in ancipation

Lancashire / Moorside Road Swinton
« on: Sunday 16 March 08 13:36 GMT (UK)  »
My grandfather has asked to find out what Moorside Social Club was before it was named Moorside Social Club, he seems to think it was a liberal club... I have searched all the local sites i know that could tell me about the Moorside area of swinton, but cannot find out anything about the area.

Anyone know the history of Moorside Club? Do you know where i can get any history about it?

Thanks
