Westmorland / Brandelhow Park
« on: Friday 28 August 09 17:14 BST (UK)  »
Could anyone tell me were I could get a copy of the report that I believe appeared in the Westmorland Gazette regarding the opening ceremony for Brandelhow Park.

I've looked at the Westmorland & Cumberland Gazette's web sites also at Cumbria County Council's Archive website and I've been unable to find a copy of it anywhere.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks

Nigel

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Baptism - Walmsley
« on: Friday 08 May 09 14:48 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

I hope someone can be of assistance, I've just discovered that my Gt G-dad was born in Chirton, in the county of Northumberland. Unfortunately I'm unsure where to look for his baptism.

I have got his birth certificate which states;

James Hamer Walmsley, b21 July 1874 at Prudhoe Street, Chirton, Father Lawrence Walmsley, Mother Sally Walmsley, Occupation of Father School Master, Birth registered 29 August 1874.

if anyone could give me any clues as to which church or churches he may have been baptized at I'd appreciate it.

Many Thanks

Nigel

United States of America / The Gregory family
« on: Saturday 29 November 08 21:28 GMT (UK)  »
Good evening to all,

Hope some one can assist me, I've just found outthat some ancestors from my wife's side emigrated to the US.

I've been on the Ellis Island site and 'found them' on the documents from the site it looks like James William, Louisa, and children Alice and William are going to somewhere that looks like Jerre Hause Ind.

I'm assuming the 'Ind' equate to Indiana, if it does I can't find a Jerre Hause!

Any clues gratefully received.

Many Thanks

Lancashire / Where's Potoven/Pottoven
« on: Saturday 25 October 08 19:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Hope somebody can help on this one I've been pouring over new and old maps looking for this place. I've got it from, The Register of the Parochial Chapelry of St John-The-Divine, in Holme-in-Cliviger. This place is near Burnley, and Potoven or Pottoven is listed as the abode on some baptismal records I've been looking at. If you've any ideas whereabouts it is I'd be grateful.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / 1861 - Walmsley, Holmes Chapel
« on: Saturday 25 October 08 17:25 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm on the verge of pulling out what little hair I have left! I'm looking for James Walmsley and family. I've found them in the 1851 but no matter where I look I can't find them in the 1861, nor can I find a death for him or his wife.

James was born abt 1799 in Holme Chapel (or Holme in Cliviger - both same place), Lancashire, married Mary in about 1824. In the 1851 census they were living at Smithy Bridge, in the Chapelry of Littleboro.

In the 1851 census he was listed as a 52 year old Fire Brick Maker, living with Mary 51, and 7 children. Has I mentioned earlier I've looked from 1852 to 1870 for a death of either him or Mary and again drawn a blank.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks

Shropshire / Elizabeth Stone/Stones - Prees
« on: Monday 06 October 08 16:50 BST (UK)  »
I hope this is the correct place to put this, if not apologies.

I'm trying to find the birth/christening of Elizabeth Stone/Stones, her father was Thomas Stone/Stones. I have her marriage certificate to William Minshall on 22 May 1845 in the Parish Church of Prees, on which her age is shown as full age.

In the 1861 census her age is shown as 41, which means she was born around 1820. As I'm sure you are aware the census isn't renowned for it's accuracy for ages.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Many thanks in advance

Lancashire / Looking for Ann Jones
« on: Sunday 06 July 08 16:06 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

I hope some one can help me, I'm trying to find Ann Jones born abt 1857 in Bolton Lancashire. I've managed to find her on the Census's for 1861 & 1871, but she's not on the 1881 census. I believe that she had a daughter, Rachel in about 1877. I've looked on the Free BMD & Lancashire BMD sites and cannot find a death that would relate to her. I've also looked at the census for 1881 and cannot find an entry that would appear to relate to her either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Nigel ???

Lancashire / Trade Directory - Leyland
« on: Thursday 05 July 07 13:05 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know where I can get hold of a copy of a Trade Directory for Leyland? The reason I'm after one is that my 4 & 5x Gt Grandparents had a Grocers Shop in the Seven Stars area and I'm trying to get together as much info as possible. Their name name was Rylance & I believe that the shop was operating from sometime in the mid-1800's up till sometime around the 1930's/40's I only know this as my uncle has recently returned from Portugal and told me it existed.

So any info would as always be gratefully received.

Many Thanks

Nigel
