Somerset Lookup Requests / Henry Sheppard of Bridgwater circa 1817
« on: Monday 22 February 16 21:19 GMT (UK)  »
After 10 years and some new information I and renewing my search for the baptism record for one Henry Shep*rd Bridgwater area circa 1817

Any help to break down this 35 year brick wall would be most appreciated.
What we know:
  • ADM 38 7474 Description Book HMS Ajax (4 Feb 1853): gives Henry's age as 34 years, 9 months and his place of birth as Bridgwater Somerset. Trade brought up to sea.
  • Marriage Certificate: Henry Sheppard and Elizabeth Vigers shows Henry's father as James Shepheard seaman.
  • BT 113/143 Registry of Shipping and Seamen: Register of Seamen's Tickets; Register Ticket No 285,312 Henry Shepherd, Born at Bridgwater in the County of Somerset  25th day of May 1817

James does not appear in 1851 and 1841 census. He was a seaman so it is not inconceivable that if still living he was at sea on census days.

Thanks!
Jim

Devon / Falston, near Plymouth
« on: Sunday 10 March 13 02:20 GMT (UK)  »
The Muster Book and discharge details of the HMS Druid shows the home of my Gt Gt Grandfather Henry Sheppard as Falston, near Plymouth.  Can some one tell us where in the Plymouth area Falston might have been?

London and Middlesex / William Mooney poss St Mary's Orphange Hounslow
« on: Monday 14 January 13 18:55 GMT (UK)  »
We are attempting to trace a William Mooney who came to Canada age 15 on the Polynesian (dep Liverpool 8 July 1886) arriving in Quebec on 18 July 1886 as part of the Cardinal Manning party.  It has been suggested that he came from St Mary's Orphanage, Hounslow.   Would anyone be able to provide any assistance in tracing William.
Perhaps a check of the 1881 census for might be a start?
Does anyone know if (and where) Board of Guardians records exist?

Thanks
Jim

Angus (Forfarshire) / Paterson and related families of Forfar
« on: Monday 29 October 12 17:49 GMT (UK)  »
I'm helping a family friend trace her family in Forfar.  Her grandfather was Robert Easton Fyfe Paterson, born in June of 1885 in Forfar, Angus, Scotland, died in Ottawa Canada in 1956.  His wife was Catherine Thornton Hill Cobb born in 1888 and died in 1940...same birth and death places.  He was a master plasterer and Catherine was a seamstress.

Her great-grandfather was William Paterson 1851-1922, his wife Annie Fyfe Easton 1861-1928...born and died as far as we know in Forfar.  He was a stone mason and Anne worked in the linen mill.

Her great great grandfather was William Blair Paterson 1827, his wife Anne Robertson 1830.

Its possible that the stonework of the Anglican church in Forfar may have been built  William Paterson (1851-1922)

Can any of the forum members add to our knowledge of this family

The Common Room / Parish Register abbreviation

Perhaps someone can answer a question that was asked of me earlier today.  What is the meaning of a capital 'H' at the end of a baptism entry?  Also and possibly related HB and HC?

Thanks

Does anyone know how to (easily) gain access to the bulb in this unit?  I can see it in the back right corner but getting in there is the problem.

Thanks

Lancashire / Dickey family: Village Inn Green Lane, Leigh
« on: Tuesday 12 April 11 19:45 BST (UK)  »
We have recently begun researching the Dickey and related families of Leigh Lancashire.  William Dickey, a retired police constable is shown in the 1901 census as publican of the Village Inn, 8 Green Lane.  In 1911 his  eldest son also William has taken over as the publican.

We would be interested to learn if any others are researching this family and if anyone has pictures or information about the Village Inn also known as Dickey's.

Kent / William Farmer (1808-1858)
« on: Saturday 27 March 10 18:42 GMT (UK)  »
My Gt. Gt. Grandfather William Farmer lived in Gravesend and earned a  dishonourable mention in
"A Historical Walk Through Gravesend And Northfleet" published by Gravesend Historical Society; which was cited in Wombwell Hall (http://www.discovergravesham.co.uk/northfleet/wombwell-hall.html).

The information I have uncovered to date (http://www.stoneyburn.ca/Docklands/Farmer/FARM_Bio_01b.php) indicates that William was far from a model citizen; but I would be interested in learning any additional details that have have led the author of the above publication to describe him “as a criminal and public nuisance”

I would appreciate any assistance in locating

  • Newspaper reports of the trial of William and his son Tom at the Quarter Sessions at Maidstone, Kent 05 July 1849 or accounts of the robbery that would have taken place in the months prior to their trial
  • Any accounts of William's misbehaviour following his release from the hulks (18 Feb 1856 )and his death in April 1958.
  • Gravesend and Milton Workhouse accounts of his last years 1856-1858

Thanks in advance

London and Middlesex / 1841 Census: The Ruins Stepney
« on: Sunday 02 August 09 01:18 BST (UK)  »
The 1841 census HO 107/714 /7 page 27 shows a Thomas Young age 31, labourer living at “The Ruins”.  It would appear that “The Ruins” are near Brook Street and Harris's Court (off Brook Street).  Can anyone enlighten us as to what "The Ruins" may have been?

Thanks

Jim
