Dublin / Michael Behan information
« on: Tuesday 01 May 12 11:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I was wondering if anyone could help me with this one.

My grandfathers brother Micheal, born october 1897, died april 1923.
I have his burial record for glasnevin cemetery, and he was apparently a soldier in the civil war.

The records are a bit confusing as listed on his birth record in 1897 is his mother, with the married name of behan, but his mother and father did not seem to marry until 1902, so I am not sure why she uses her married name.

has anyone come across something similar before?
also how would I go about finding more information about him being in service. I had thought of the freemans journal for death information but it will be a while before I can get in to the library.

Any ideas appreciated.

Ireland / What was classed as Minor in 1893
« on: Friday 13 November 09 12:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hi quick question

If someone was listed as a minor as apposed to "full" age on a marriage certificate what age would they be under in 1893, I am leaning towards them being under 18, but is that just a modern thought?

Any help appreciated

Dublin / Which Dublin parish (1911)??
« on: Thursday 06 August 09 10:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I was wondering if someone could tell me which parish the street Dicksons Row (1911 census) might be attached to. I think the area is Ushers quay.

I have reached a brick wall (as usual) and was hoping to contact the church to see if they had a record.

Thanks

Ireland / Help with 1873 mystery
« on: Friday 24 July 09 16:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I wonder could anyone offer any advice as to where to turn next.

I have traced back my family and have found my gggf was a member of the Dublin Metropolitan Police.

I have found his marriage from 1873, and his sons birth record from later the same year.

My main problem is, that he was killed in the line of duty, according to his police record. But I cannot find his death registered, in 1873 or 1874 (the lady in the gro mentioned a corroners report can take a year or more and the death wouldnt be registered until then)

I have found an article in the Freemans journal to say he was being buried on the 25th feb 1873, and I have found his grave in Glasnevin, but the missing piece ( well one of them) is the death record, or more details.

Has anyone any ideas, I mostly just do the lookups on line when i can, but I could if necessary make a trip in to town (dublin) to access other resources if i was sure enough that i would find info.

Thanks in advance

Kilkenny / Long Shot
« on: Thursday 03 January 08 10:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All

I know its a long shot, but I have just managed to confirm my ggf was from Kilkenny, from the 1911 census.

My question is, I had always been told that he played hurling for Kilkenny. I have now managed to confirm he was actually from there, but how would i go about trying to see if he played hurling for their team???

he was married 17 years in 1911. And I am guessing he would have played before 1894 when he married.

Problem is surname Smith, its not exactly uncommon ;)

any pointers appreciated

Dublin / Dicksons Row Dublin
« on: Wednesday 05 December 07 14:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

I hope someone can help point me in the right direction. Thanks to the online census i was finally able to find where my grandfather lived in Dublin in 1911. (i think i have checked almost every street in and around that area looking for a Behan family).

The question is now, does anyone have a link for a good map from around that time.
The address was Disksons Row, in Ushers quay.

I am familiar with Dublin, but its not showing up on Maps, so i'm guessing its long gone...

The new census thing is really great, I have been over 2 years back and forth to libraries and archives trying to find him, and it took all of 2 mins on the site. Yay finally a lead!

Any ideas about a map would be appreciated

Thanks

Ireland / Any Connection to Smith??
« on: Friday 10 August 07 15:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I am looking for anyone with information or a connection to Constance Smith, the actress from the 1940's and 50's.

I have searched the internet for any information on her family or her, but can only find links etc to the old movies she was in.

She was my grandmothers niece, and I would love to know a bit more about her. Her father, I think was either Peter or Patrick Smith, and as far as I know would have been born in Dublin.
Her mother, I think surname Mcgann, was from Limerick.

I had given up on anymore information about this connection, but by accident I discovered a very sad article about her in The Irish Times on Tuesday. And so decided to see if anyone could make a connection or suggestion.

Thanks
