London and Middlesex / William Edward AUSTIN / AUSTEN in 1891
« on: Thursday 21 February 19 14:27 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone find either of these two, apparently separate, but possibly one and the same persons, in 1891?
Both have appeared in records as either AUSTIN or AUSTEN.

William Edward AUSTIN supposedly born 8 Nov 1869 Bow (1939 Register and census data), who marries Alice Maud CARTER in 1894 at Hagerston All Saints, saying he was a clerk, resident 70 Middleton Rd, son of engineer William AUSTIN.
A 12 yr old Wm AUSTEN was admitted to Cranbrook Rd school Tower Hamlets on 20 Jun 1882, the admission record showing him as born 8 Nov 1869, parent/guardian Wm AUSTEN Address 17 Grove Rd.
This being my only sighting prior to the 1894 marriage above.
William appears to have died in Sheffield in 1955.
See https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Austin-9876

William Edward Sinclair Fitz. AUSTEN birth registered 1869 Qtr 4, mother maiden surname BLAKE (GRO index - birth cert. on order)
Last sighting I have being 1881 census as an 11 year old living with parents William (railway servant goods department) and Sarah AUSTIN at 10 Selmen St, Mile End Old Town

Charles MUNDAY and Ann HILL married in 1844 at Micheldever.

We know that two daughters emigrated to New Zealand, Mary Ann MUNDAY (married Frederick Joseph MADDAMS), and Alice Jane MUNDAY (married James TULL), both settling in the Canterbury district on New Zealand.
But were there any descendants from the other children who also ended up in New Zealand - prior to  say 1920?

Check out the growing collaborative data on the family
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Munday-594
or
https://www.familysearch.org/tree/pedigree/descendancy/MVL8-G2G

My interest:
Trying to sort out how come there are good DNA matches between a couple of families I'm helping with their DNA results, and two descendants of Mary Ann MADDAMS nee MUNDAY.

Anyone with knowledge of another branch in NZ could help greatly by contributing information for this search!

Interested in hearing from any DNA tested descendants of Charles and Ann (HILL) MUNDAY as a result.

Hertfordshire / Joseph MADDAMS/Louisa KELL North Mimms, Herts
« on: Wednesday 29 November 17 04:56 GMT (UK)  »
Love to swap info with anyone researching the family of Joseph MADDAMS born 1819 North Mimms. He married Louisa KELL in 1849, registered Ealing, Middlesex.

In particular at the moment I'm curious to find out what happened to their son Charles Edwin MADDAMS (https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LZKG-DYJ and https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Maddams-12).
Charles Edwin's birth was reg. Staines, Middlesex, England 1860 Qtr 1, mother's surname KELL.
He seems to go under Edwin (1861 census) and hasn't yet been found in England after 1871.

Is he the Charles E MADDAMS in Essex, Ontario marrying 1889 to Jane Little?
One source shows that Charles' mother as Mary rather than Louise, but agree on Joseph as his father's name.
The Ontario chap is variously C Edward/Chas E/Edward/Ed but I've not found him as Edwin.
Birth date supposedly 15 Nov 1859, England, which does fit with a Qtr 1 birth registration in Middlesex England (Staines, mother KELL).

Love to hear from any descendants of the family but even more so  if you've considered, or have undertaken, DNA testing - FamilyTreeDNA's yDNA for direct male line MADDAMS, or any of the autosomal tests (Ancestry, MyHeritage, FamilyFinder from FTDNA) as long as we can check on GEDMatch.com for matches.

Roxburghshire / Oliver HENDERSON (Hawick) & Isabel SINTON (Cavers) marr. 1808
« on: Tuesday 28 July 15 13:04 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone expand upon my knowledge of this couple?
Sum total of my knowledge comes from their marriage entry in Cavers, Roxburghshire, which reads: "Oliver Henderson Hawick and Isabel Sinton in this parish 3 days"

Presumed to have died (or emigrated) prior to 1841.

Would love to
a) prove they are the parents of Adam HENDERSON born about 31 Jan 1814, Southdean, emigrated 1873 (with wife Janet EASTON and son George) settling in Alma, Jackson Co., Wisconsin where he died in 1892 (FamilySearch Tree ID L8JL-K31)
b) figure out how Isabel connects to the SINTON families of the area.

refers but is part of a very very long thread, so time to break this bit out into a new one.

I'm trying to sort out which marriages and baptisms belong to which William and Elizabeth 1808 to around 1838
Can anyone claim any of these and allocate the baptisms to the right mother, who may or may not be one of the Elizabeths married in Carlisle?

as the earlier messages indicate my primary interest is in identifying Thomas Wilkinson GRAHAM's correct parents to see if his family of GRAHAMs can be connected to mine and account for an autosomal dna match with my maternal aunt.

The 1841 census of a Thomas of the right age in the hsehold of William, a weaver, and Elizabeth in Rigg St is the best id I have yet found for him.
The Thomas Wilkinson GRAHAM who married Ann STEEN was at the "Jovial Sailor" Inn by 1871 and dies in 1874 (admin granted to relict Ann, both are in the Richardson St Cemetery in Carlisle according to http://www.carlisleshistory.co.uk/page8.htm).
Three of their daughters were enumerated in the same census as living in the Grocers shop in the same street, Caldcotes, presumably the same grocer's shop where Thomas and Ann were in 1861.

Gloucestershire / Jeremiah Parkinson, Kemerton Lodge, Cheltenham
« on: Monday 24 March 14 12:11 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to sort out three (so far) Jeremiah PARKINSONs, one of whom is likely to be the son of Jeremiah PARKINSON and Elizabeth FRANKS.
Can anyone add anything concrete to these identifications?

The three 1791-1796ish Jeremiahs (excluding the more northern ones) I've found so far in the 1841 census:
In Brighton: Jeremiah and Fanny (BIAS) with son Edwin ++
Jeremiah not born county, described as stable dealer.
When Edwin baptized Jeremiah was a greengrocer living on Back Road, Islington (other posts refer)
Assumed to be the one dying 1844 Brighton.

In St Pancras: Jeremiah "Ind", 45 not born county - no idea who he belongs to as yet.

In Cheltenham: Jeremiah 50 proprietor of houses Capt R.N. Gloster Militia
This Jeremiah died 1867, Hyde Park but of Kemerton, Cheltenham.
Later census data says he was born Clapham.
Married Charlotte HOPTON in 1845.
When Charlotte died in 1902 her probate was granted to  Sir Edward HOPTON K.C.B. lieutenant general H.M. army and Reverend Michael HOPTON clerk.

This latter is my favourite candidate to be the son of Jeremiah and Elizabeth (FRANKS) but some trees seem to claim the Brighton one married to Fanny as their son instead.

Assuming I've the right family for Jeremiah and Elizabeth a baptism of one of their children shows that the Jeremiah married to Elizabeth FRANKS was a hop dealer/merchant.
newspaper reports also show he was bankrupted shortly before his 1809 death.

Which son is the right Jeremiah is actually peripheral to my quest, but as trees differed, I though I'd try to see which were more accurate.
My actual quest is try and find the 1756ish baptism of the father.
My interest is in the good dna match with a descendant of Jeremiah and Elizabeth.
As I have a PARKINSON family over in Essex around 1780s I'm trying to see if I can bridge the gap.

Devon / DAW or DAWE of South West Devon
« on: Wednesday 14 November 12 21:50 GMT (UK)  »
With Family Tree DNA offering their annual discounts right now (until the end of December) I would love to hear from any direct male line DAW or DAWE descendants of any of the trees shown on my DAWE page
http://familytree.lornahen.com/spDAWE.htm
who may be willing to do their bit for family history and join the DAWE Surname DNA project.
The trees shown there are mostly from South West Devon: Lamerton, Buckland Monachorum, Meavy, Walkhampton etc

Descendants are worldwide, with many moving to: Jersey, New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the States, as well as within the UK of course.

Further information and links available from the Dawe Surname DNA Project diary at
http://Dawedna.blogspot.com
and at http://dnasurnames.info/lineages/spDAWELineages.htm
So far the project only has representatives from the Newfoundland DAWE family/ies and they would love to know where in England their DAWE ancestor(s) may have come from.

Don't be shy! It's a painless process.
Think of it as preserving a bit of yourself for posterity.
Don't know anything about genetic genealogy?
There are heaps of helpful links out there - some I've found useful are available at
http://genie.lornahen.com/notes/dna/links/

Lorna
