Ross & Cromarty / James Tweedie pensioner 'auto ness'
« on: Friday 22 July 16 12:56 BST (UK)  »
Hello fellow Rootschatters,
I was looking at some Scottish baptism records for Rosskeen and found an ancestor's occupation listed as what looks like 'pensioner auto ness' but I have no idea as to what this means.

The whole records reads as follows:

James, son to James Tweedie Pensioner auto Ness and Isabel Ross his wife was born 21 Feb and bapt 10 March.

I realise that what I am reading as 'auto ness' might be something else but it is definitely 'auto' and possibly 'ness'.  Perhaps other have come across an expression that  is similar?

James Tweedie senior was a tailor by profession and later moved to London.

Is anyone able to help?

Kind regards

Kirk

Dear Rootschatters,

My ancestress, Sarah Roberts, says that she was born at Buckden in about 1786.  She married, in 1809 at St Neots, Robert Cook, and died in 1878 at Caxton.

I am trying to find out Sarah's parents.  Is anyone able to help?

Bye for now,

Armed Forces / North Lincoln Regiment of Foot
« on: Sunday 09 August 15 12:00 BST (UK)  »
Dear Fellow Rootschatters,

My ancestor, Edward Hall, and his father Thomas, were in the North Lincoln Regiment of Foot.

When Edward died his obit stated that he had been a drummer for the NLRoF for forty years (which may have been an exaggeration).  His father Thomas was stated to have been a sergeant.

Edward Hall (c.1769-1841) Born (he said) in Grantham in about 1769.  In later life he was a cordwainer, living in Hull and died in 1841.

Of Thomas Hall I know only his name and presumed rank

Is anyone able to help with other information on their military careers?

Bye for now

Flintshire / John Smith: foreign?
« on: Wednesday 11 March 15 21:46 GMT (UK)  »
Dear Fellow Rootschatters,

I have been going through the Bishops transcripts for the parishes around Bangor-is-y-coed and have a problem: In the marriage records it seems to use the word 'foreign':

"John Smith of Althre: fforeign and Margaret Edwards of Bangor now married by licence August 14 1701'

The word 'foreign' is used in three cases on the same page but I don't understand its meaning.  Is anyone able to help?

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / George Acklam
« on: Saturday 25 October 14 16:18 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for an assortment of George Acklams of Bewholme.

My ancestor is George Acklam born in, I guess, about 1650ish because he had a son called George who was born in 1673. I don't know when he married or who, or when he died but I do know that he had more children including a son called Richard (born in 1678) who is also my ancestor.

There is a George Acklam who died in 1620/30 who founded the so called Acklam bequest.

There is a George Acklam who compounded for his estates in 1658.

These four George Acklams (and Richard Acklam) all lived in Bewholme and I guess had their baptisms deaths and marriages at the Church of Ss. Mary Magdalen and Helena, in Nunkeeling.

I have seen the records for the Acklam gravestones and memorials at Nunkeeling and I have gained some details from the IGI but I would like to see how my George is related to George (d.1629).  I am sure that he must be but I lack proof.

Has anyone investigated this?

Are any wives known?

I am hoping that someone might know more information.

It seems to be a tricky one...

Bye for now,

Kirk

Dear Rootschatters,
I am looking into the marriage and background of Elizabeth Pinder.

I have discovered via the IGI that she married Henry Herring at 'York' on 3 October in the year 1781.

I am trying to find in which one of the various churches of York did the event take place.
Is anyone able to help?

I was always under the impression that Elizabeth came from the Leven-Sigglesthorne area, and while I know that she and Henry may have gone to York to be married (much as people went to London from the surrounding countryside) I know that at her death in 1829, mention was made of her family and friends in York as well as in Garton with Grimston, where she died.

I am wondering if the records for the marriage in York will give any clues or if anyone has any other details they could give to shed some light on this shadowy person.

I can tell you that she was born in about 1746 and perhaps was a widow or else married later in life.

Bye for now,

Pembrokeshire / Thomas Llewhelin of Dale
« on: Saturday 11 October 14 21:10 BST (UK)  »
Dear Fellow Rootschaters,

I am writing to see if anyone is able to tell me the parents of this chap who was, I think, born at Dale somewhere between the years 1785 and 1787.  I made a journey to Dale a few years back - it is not a very big place.

The only information I have about him is that he was a fisherman.  He was alive in 1841 but not (I presume) in 1851 which means (if Freebmd is correct) that he died in in either 1846 or 1848.

Is anyone able to assist with a more concrete baptism date and parentage?

Bye for now,

Kirk

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / George and Harriet Fallowfield
« on: Saturday 20 September 14 19:39 BST (UK)  »
Dear fellow Rootschatters,
I am trying to locate burial records for Harriett and George Fallowfield.

Harriett died in 1876 at Egginton Street, Sculcoates

George died in 1887 at Wassand Street, Myton

I am thinking that they might have been buried at Sculcoates but I can't be certain although I do know that they are not buried at the Western Cemetery because I was able to look at the records last time I was in Hull.  They were parishioners of Christ Church in Sculcoates.

Is anyone able to assist?

Bye for now,

Kirk

Dear Fellow Rootschatters,

Is anyone able to look up the marriage details of Mary Fallowfield and Benjamin Smith Snowden?

They were married in the year 1878 at Hull but that is all I know.

Apart from the date and place I am interested to see who their witnesses were.  They lived in Sculcoates and so I am guessing it took place at Christ Church but I may be off the track.

Thank you

Kirk
