Warwickshire / Petty Family Atherstone
« on: Tuesday 05 August 08 00:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone

Wondering if anyone can help with a branch of my tree.

I have a Charles Petty born about 1816 in Atherstone.  Looking for siblings please.

Also his parents are Thomas Petty born about 1785 and Ann born about 1782 both in Atherstone.  Any help on these would also be appreciated and also on their parentage and Ann's maiden name.

Thanks in advance for the help.

I wonder if anyone can give me any help with the Petty Family of Leicester.

They are present on 1891 Census (RG12/2499/23)

Frederick A Petty age 30
Laura Petty age 27
Florence Petty 8 (from whom I'm descended)
Minnie Petty 7
Frederick A Petty 4
Thomas Petty 3
Laura Petty 1

I cannot then find the family on the 1901 census.  Any ideas anyone?

Thanks in advance.

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Church queries
« on: Monday 14 January 08 09:50 GMT (UK)  »
I was reading the post about the woman in the wedding dress and identifying the church.  Just in case anyone else has problems with identifying churches, there is a group called the Church Crawlers who like nothing better than a good mystery.  The website is

Hope this helps someone.

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Richardson's of Nether Poppleton/Moor Monkton
« on: Friday 27 April 07 09:32 BST (UK)  »

Would be interested in any info on the Richardson family who lived in Nether Poppleton and Moor Monkton, near York, England

I have John Richardson born 1770 in MM married Isabella Calvert born 1782 in MM. Children were Mary (1807), Elizabeth (1810), George 1812, John 1814, Hannah 1816, Robert 1818 and Emma 1827. I am a descendant of Robert who moved to Ugglebarnby, near Whitby and married Alice Hodgson. They had three children William 1841, Isabella 1843 and John 1845.

It appears that Robert's two brothers (George and John) also moved to Ugglebarnby with him or after him. John was drowned at sea during passage to America on the Ship the Hungarian in 1860, together with one of George's children. George became a farmer and fathered a brood of kids.

Any help on any members of this family would be much appreciated.

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Richardson's of Nether Poppleton
« on: Wednesday 28 February 07 06:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Everyone

Much to my surprise I have found that my "Whitby" Richardson's actually seem to come from Nether Poppleton and moved to Ugglebarnby.  Am still digging but I need to confirm parentage and therefore sibling status of

Robert b 1818 - on free bmd these two seem to have the same parents
Henry b 1823 - John Richardson and Isabella Calvert

But then cannot link George Richardson b 1813.

George was a farmer in Ugglebarnby and the other two were brick/tile makers.  Robert is my direct line.

At Whitby Heritage Centre yesterday a man had been reading about some Richardson's lost at sea
"Emigrant Ship The Hungarian wrecked on 20th February 1860, Cape Lodge off Sable Island.  Lost were John and Henry Richardson, son and brother of George Richardson, Farmer, Ugglebarnby"

From the records of this ship, John was 45 and Henry 20.

Any help appreciated.

Yorkshire (North Riding) / As you did so well with my last puzzle ......
« on: Monday 19 February 07 21:41 GMT (UK)  »
As you did so well with the last puzzle can anyone help with this one which has been longstanding for a number of years with one of my distant relatives and for me since I started my research last year.

Susannah (and all varient spellings) Readman born 18th Feb 1844 and baptised the same day in the Roman Catholic Church, St Hedda's in Egton Bridge.  Mother noted as Mary Readman - no father of child noted.  Godparents George Holmes and Agnes Holmes.

Susannah then disappears and is not found on any census' until 1861 when she is aged 17 and a servent in Thornton Dale.  She then marries Jeremiah Collinson, in 1862 in Grosmont and has John, William, Jeremiah Thomas and Jane ELizabeth (my great grandmother).  Jeremiah dies in 1874 and she ends up in the workhouse and quickly remarries William Shipley in 1876 at Whitby Register Office and settles in Middlesbrough with him.

On the marriage certificate for Jeremiah her father is noted as William Peirson, Farmer and witnesses are John Peirson and Eleanor Wilson.  On the marriage certificate to William Shipley, her father is noted as John Pearson, Labourer.  Witnesses are Thomas Warters and Robert William White.

My problems are to pin down the Mary Readman who is the mother of Susannah which I have yet to do and also to see if I can find out which is her father.  It gets very confusing as I have Peirson's and Readman's on both sides of my family and I'm sure at some point they linked.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Steel Family buried with Richardson's - connection??
« on: Friday 09 February 07 13:11 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone have any connection to the following people

Alice Steel (b approx 1836) died 1903 aged 39y
Ann Steel (b approx 1867) died 1906 aged 39y
Richard Steel (b approx 1869) died 1913 aged 82 years
Robert Steel (b approx 1858) died 1933 aged 75 years

The reason I am asking is that Mary Richardson (died 1902) and John Richardson (died 1920) were buried together with Alice Steel with them in a triple depth grave.  Next door plot belongs to the other Steel's.  I have no connection that I have found so far in my tree.

Anyone got any good ideas?  Larpool tell me it was a purchased grave.

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Whitby Workhouse records 1876
« on: Thursday 08 February 07 07:27 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know if any workhouse records survive from 1876 for Whitby workhouse.  One of my ancestors was married for the 2nd time them after his 1st husband died (in 1874).  Her address is noted as Whitby Workhouse but her occupation is "Nurse".  I just wondered whether she was actually working there (and living in) or whether she was an inmate.  Would like some more details such as admission records etc.
