Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Baptism Entry 1705
« on: Monday 25 December 23 17:01 GMT (UK)  »
The bottom entry in this list of baptisms from St Oswald, Ashbourne, Derbyshire in February 1705/06 could be mine.
Freereg have interpreted it as "Mary daughter of Tho ALSOP of Ashbourne, Notes: ALSOP als GRAY".
But it, to me, reads, as "Mary daughter of Tho GRAY als? Alsop a? Chappel in this Parish of Ashbourne".
According to genuki: Alsop-en-le-dale, a chapelry in the Parish of Ashbourne. So I think it is Mary GRAY of Alsop en le dale being baptised.

In which case Mary is not the Mary ALLSOP I am looking for as she is actually Mary GRAY and I am back to the drawing board.

Thoughts please. Thank you, Mitch

Sussex / Anyone heard of 'Beading'
« on: Monday 21 August 23 17:39 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone relate 'Parish of Beading? in ye County of Sussex' to any place in Sussex? The item is a 1747 marriage in the City of London. In 1754 I record the couples first Child Baptised in Wiston, Sussex. Thanks.

Stirlingshire / Carronshore on Maps
« on: Thursday 15 May 14 11:41 BST (UK)  »
Looking at the Stirlingshire OS 25 inch to the mile Maps on NLS I now realise that Carronshore was divided between Larbert & Bothkennar Parishes which I hadn't realised before.

Stirling Sheet XXIV.11 covers the west side of Carronshore in Larbert Parish around modern day Church Street & Waddell Street.

Stirling Sheet XXIV.12 covers the east side, in Bothkennar Parish, around North Main Street down to the river.

What I can't find is Dock Street & the bit of Main Street between the top of Dock St and almost to the bottom of North Main Street. This appears to be in Larbert Parish and so should be in map 11 - but I can't find it in insets.  There appears to be a gap between the two sheets? Or am I just missing something?

Thanks

Mitch

Clackmannanshire / Dollar - Middle Walk
« on: Friday 24 June 11 21:47 BST (UK)  »
Anyone familiar with Dollar?

I would be interested to know the location of 'Clifton Cottage'. It is mentioned as being on Middle Walk (now Manor House Road) in 1910 and possibly near the junction with Cairnpark Street and one of the gates to Dollar Academy (1911 census).

Anyone know if it still exists?

Thanks

Mitch

Stirlingshire / Marriage at St Ninians
« on: Tuesday 19 April 11 15:55 BST (UK)  »
A birth certificate I have states that Peter Mitchell married Mary Duncan on 5th June 1857 at Millary? St Ninians.

Firstly I can't read the word in front of St Ninians - any suggestions?

Secondly the IGI shows the date as 24th May 1857. Having researched a few other marriages around that date, I'm presuming that date is a banns date. I can find other marriages around that date where the marriage takes palce a few weeks later in another parish - eg Falkirk & Blackfoot, Perthshire on Scotlandspeople. What I CANT find on SP is Peter & Marys Marriage.

Has anyone come across part of St Ninians marriages being missing?

Thanks

Mitch

Stirlingshire / Carnock House NOT Garnock House!!
« on: Wednesday 10 March 10 11:42 GMT (UK)  »
I have a 1911 marriage at Garnock House, District of St Ninians.
The Marriage was performed by the Minister of Airth
and the Brides residence, as a Domestic servant, was Garnock House.
Anyone know where Garnock House was?

Thanks

Stirlingshire / Carronshore
« on: Wednesday 30 September 09 20:43 BST (UK)  »

I have a letter dated 13 Jul 1929 from John W McGowan, Assistant Minister, Carronshore Church.
Does anybody know if this was a Church of Scotland establishment or Free Church?

Also has anybody ever heard of "William Russells Private Museum, Church Street, Carronshore c 1900" I have just discovered this on the internet and William is one of my direct ancestors - a hero of the Carron Dam Disaster.

Many thanks

Mitch
