Lancashire / direction please in Salford
« on: Tuesday 03 April 12 23:27 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me where in abouts in Salford was Martha Street. It isn't on Google, so I can only presume that it no longer exists, or possibly it may have been renamed, but I would like to know for curiosity where it used to be please. Thanks

Australia / need a look up in Adelaide
« on: Saturday 06 November 10 11:02 GMT (UK)  »
A mysterious occurrence is always interesting  ??? and I seem to have one in my family. As all things it is rather complicated,   :-\ but I will try and explain it as simply as I can. There was a Nancy Casson (1872-1945) who was a midwife and she married a William Miller in Lancaster, England in 1895. In the 1911 British census she and her husband say that along with their daughter called Annie Irene born 1904, they also have an adopted son call Richard Albert Casson born in 1911. I got the birth cert for this little boy and found he was born on the 5th January 1911, his mother was a Martha Casson, who if I am not mistaken, was Nancy's cousin...the chances are that I am correct in that assumption. The next we see, is that Nancy, her husband William who is a tin smith, daughter Annie Irene AND Albert Miller born 1911 were on the Irishman heading towards Adelaide in Australia. At that point there is nothing left of Richard Albert Casson or Albert Miller, who I think must be the same lad, as I know they had no other children of their own. It would rather suggest that little Albert popped his clogs during the journey, or soon after they arrived in Adelaide. :'( I could do with someone keen enough to take a ganders at the deaths in Adelaide in 1912 or possibly the beginning of 1913...to see if he can be found. Annie Irene's family have lived in Australia ever since, but far from Adelaide...I have been in contact with my much treasured distant cousin  :-* for many years, but they say that they have no memory in the family of this Albert Miller or Richard Albert Casson, which is why I think that he must have died whilst Annie Irene was too young (she would have only been about eight years old) to realise, or recall that she had an adopted brother.

Norfolk / BLOSS
« on: Thursday 18 February 10 11:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone....I need some help....I went to the name index and didn't find the name Bloss....Ok I'm probably blind, but I was wondering if anyone out there has any FH to do with the Bloss family.  My GGrandmother was called Ann Bloss and she was married in Sunderland in 1880....her father who had been a gardener was Henry Bloss who was already deceased according to the marriage cert. However, in 1881 she puts her place of birth as Benny Edge, Norfolk. I looked on Google Earth for that place and it didn't come up. I also have some info passed to me that she was born in Brancaster in 1857. I'm sure the DoB is correct. The next info comes from the 1871 census with an Ann Bloss aged 14 ie born in 1857 living with her grandmother, but PoB is Blickling. Going back to 1861 when 4 years old, she is living with a father called Henry Bloss/Blass and again she was born in Blickling. What I should like is to firstly find any relatives of this family and secondly if someone could tell me if all these supposed places of birth are in the same area. Not knowing Norfolk (my loss) I could do with a quick geography lesson please.

Cumberland / an enigma?
« on: Sunday 30 August 09 12:11 BST (UK)  »

I have some G.Great aunts and an uncle who seem to have disappeared!!! John Casson and Margaret had 8 children….the first was Mary Parks b. 1863 in Ulverston (born out of wedlock, but a main stay to the family). Then the 3rd child was Agnes Eleanor Casson b. 1869 in Kendal. 4th was Margaret b.1872 in Kendal. 6th And 7th were Twins John and Elizabeth b.1879 in Kendal. John married Mary Richardson (the marriage cert says the ceremony took place at the Parish Church in Windermere in 1899, her father was Thomas Richardson a miner. John was living in Rayrigg Road (I think this is where the John Peel is)). Elizabeth, his twin sister, married James Burns in the same year and in the same church, but all these folks I can’t find for sure afterwards and it seems most parculiar.

I am related to the 2nd child William and his wife Mary who ran The Commercial, which is now The John Peel in Bowness…which is probably why John was there prior to his marriage. I know the families of the other two children not mentioned, but what happened to the rest? I am hoping that someone somewhere can give me help in solving this puzzle. It would be wonderful to discover that they all had families and are happily out there……Thank you everyone.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / how do I do that?
« on: Tuesday 04 August 09 14:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,
I have a relative who was born at 44 Great Albion Street in Halifax on the 26th May 1856. I vaguely know that there were relatives in Yorkshire at that time...rather guessed than can prove at this point, as most of my family lived around Westmorland. I can only surmise that my family sent mother away to Halifax to have her baby well away from home territory and gossip! What I would like, is to find out who's house this above address belonged too at that time. It could, with a tad of luck, be the Yorkshire part of my family, or it could just end up as a large place where loads of women went to have there children...some kind of nursing home perhaps. I need someone who can tell me how, (from a distance via computer) I go about to find out that information. Thanks

Westmorland / Huck family
« on: Wednesday 24 June 09 17:32 BST (UK)  »
As family history goes, I’ve not got very far back before I’ve hit my brickwall…I am hoping that someone will come up with some sensible ideas for me, which is why I’m writing here today…. I have a GGGrandfather whose name was Richard Huck, but that is as far as I can get. He was born about 1834 in Whinfell, Westmorland and in the 1841 census he is living in How Stone, Whinfell with another Richard Huck aged 65 who’s a farmer and Margaret Huck aged 25. In the 1851 census he is living with a family in Burrow with Burrow as a farm servant. By 1861 he is married and living with his wife and two boys…. I also have his marriage certificate to Elizabeth Wilson, which says that his father is John Morris!!! Now, because there are no ‘relationships’ stated on the 1841 census and this John Morris mentioned on his marriage certificate could be his step father or his biological father…there are a many possibilities, (I can think of several connotations to what information I have!!! (Some with tongue in cheek  :o and others less so!!! :-\)… What I could do with ideally, is his christening information don’t you think? BUT were would I find that? It is not on IGI or any other place I can find on the computer….I don’t live near by and I believe that the information is being held by someone who volunteered to transcribe the info 2 years or more ago!! Any sensible ideas from folks would be welcome.

Lancashire / employment

My Great Grandfather Richard Huck was a Beerhouse Keeper in Seacombe, Wirral in the 1890 census.... How can I find out which beerhouse he worked for or if he moved from one beerhouse to another to do the brewing? Is there a Bulmer's directory for this area and if so, can I ask anyone who has a copy to look him up for me to see if he happens to be in it. I'd be very grateful, thanks. Lyn

« on: Wednesday 17 September 08 19:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone.

Just hoping someone can tell me what became of the family of John Casson who was born in Kendal in 1879. He married Mary Richardson in Windermere in 1899.

He also had a twin sister called Elizabeth who married James Burns in Windermere also in 1899. I'd love to hear from anyone who can tell me what became of these Casson's and their families. I have all info up to 1901, but then what happened to them?

Thanks for your help
