Other Countries / John Taylor b abt 1810 - 1877 India H.E.I.C.S
« on: Friday 19 July 19 13:17 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I have a Gt Gt Gt Grandfather John Taylor (1788-1841)who was Lt Col in India before retiring to Scotland. He was a cadet in 1804, made Lt. 1806, Capt in 1823 then 6 days later married Sarah Falconar Graham in Bombay. Sarah and John went on to have 7 children between 1824-1839.

There was however another much older adopted son  who died 21 Jun 1877 in Kasauli, Bengal a retired extra assistant commissioner. Going from John Taylor jnr's gravestone he would have been born abt 1810 when the senior John Taylor was a Lieutenant of abt 22 years old. He married a Tristiana Squire in Oct 1842 in India DumDum, Calcutta
Tristiana's sister wrote a memoir and said that they had met a young JohnTaylor when they were travelling from South Africa to India in 1826-1827 but I'm not sure if these dates are accurate. Lt Col John Taylor's mother mentions the jnr John Taylor in her will as the adopted son of Lt Col Taylor in 1826.

Is there any way to find proof of who the jnr John Taylor's parents were? I'm guessing he is the son of Lt Col John Taylor but have no idea who his mother might be but I can't find any John Taylors born around this time in India.

I would be very grateful for any hints or pointers .

Midlothian / Sarah Falconer / John Taylor M.A. rector Musselburgh Grammar School
« on: Sunday 12 August 18 01:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone

I have several mysteries that I'd be very grateful for some help with:

John Taylor M.A. died 1820 aged 67 in Inveresk he had been the rector at Musseburgh Grammar for 30 years. I'm assuming he was born about 1753-54 but where and to whom I don't know. Another relative had suggested he was born on 1 Jul 1756 to John Taylor and Mgt Hoggard in 1756 in Kelso Rox. but I just feel that date isn't quite as accurate as I'd like it to be.  I have no idea where he gained his M.A. either. I can see that he was chosen for the position as Rector by Dr. Alexander Carlyle and replaced John Murray on his retirement.

At some stage he married Sarah Faconar who died 24 Sep 1826 still in Musselburgh. I had assumed her parents were Alexander Falconer and Margaret Elder/Alder and she was b in Lauder in 1750. They had at least 8 children between 1780 -1795. Most of their children were born in Lauder the last 2 in Musselburgh.

I have the transcript of a letter from their Grandson (also John Taylor) which states: "My Grandmother's brother, Falconer of Woodcot of the then Sir George Clerk of Pennicuike, Bart  had a son also in the Scots Greys whose sister married Sir Thomas Napier K.C.B. brother of Admiral Sir Charles Napier K.C.B."

I can find an Alexander Falconer of Woodcote who had inherited a property Reidhall from his father Thomas and renamed the property Woodcote/Woodcot. However I can't find any reference to Thomas having any other children. I wonder if the Falconers of Woodcote are in fact cousins of some sort but would like to prove or disprove that theory once and for all.

Any help would be very gratefully received.

many thanks

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / 1841 1851 census request
« on: Monday 08 November 10 20:56 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if someone can help me try to tie up a loose end? Although I am asking for census information I am really asking for any help anyone might be kind enough to give.

Henry Cavendish married a relative of mine, Ellen Lamb:
He died at some point before the 1881 census. Ellen still said she was "Honorable" when she was a widow in the 1881 census.

1861
RG9/658/4/ 3
Newchurch, Hampshire, England  15 Belvedere St
William Perkins 26 Head Journeyman Butcher born Isle of Wight
Harriett Perkins 28 Wife born Isle of Wight
Henry Cavendish 63  Lodger Nobleman London, England
Ellen Cavendish 46 Lodger Nobleman's wife London, England

I have an old hand written family tree that says Henry was b Nov 1797 died 26 Mar 1877.
I know more about his wife. Ellen was b 8 Feb 1805 dau of John Lamb and Elizabeth Shorey in Camberwell she died 19 Aug 1901 would her death certificate give me any information about her husband if I ordered it? I cannot find a Free BMD listing for Henry's death only one for a much younger man.

many thanks

Surrey Lookup Requests / 1851 Census look up request Walter Hill
« on: Tuesday 03 November 09 19:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I wonder if someone would be kind enough to try and find a Walter Hill and his new wife Jane (nee Smith)  in the 1851 census.

Walter worked as a gardener at Kew Gardens in Richmond from 1843 and the couple immigrated to Australia in 1852-53, so I hope he was still at Kew in 1851. Walter was born in Scotland on 31 Dec 1819 but the one I'm really interested in is his wife I'd love to know where & when she was born to help narrow down a search for her mother's family (Jane Brunton).

many thanks

Hi

I wonder if someone would be kind enough to look up the 1861 census for a Thomas Davies and his wife Jane Clarke Davies. they had a daughter Margaret just before the 1851 census when they were living in  Morpeth Street in Liverpool.
Thomas was a block and mast maker in 1851 b. abt 1825 probably in Liverpool and Jane was b. in scotland also in 1825.
Very grateful for any help you can give as I cannot find what happened to this line of our family.

West Lothian (Linlithgowshire) / 1851 & 1861 census look up Bo'ness
« on: Friday 30 October 09 22:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I'm looking for John Stephens (b. 1822 Bo'ness) who married Isabella Elizabeth McNeill on 25 Mar 1846 in Bo'ness.
They had 2 sons : John Patrick Graham S. in Jun 1847 and Neil MacNeill Stephens in Jun 1851.
John & Isabella died in 1864 & 1863 & are buried in Bo'ness - so I I hope I can find them in the 1851 & 1861 censuses in Bo'ness - nothing on Free Cen site.
N.B. in 1851 John's father another John is listed as "Stevphey".
I'd be very grateful for any help.

Renfrewshire / Greenock 1871 census look up request
« on: Tuesday 27 October 09 20:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I have been trying to track down my Gt Gt Gt Grandmother Jane Clarke Stephens (nee Brunton).
She was b. in 1798 in Muirkirk, Ayr and married a schoolmaster John Stephens in 1820. They lived in Bo'ness until his death in 1844 & in the 1851 census she was living with a daughter in Prestonkirk working as a school teacher - after that I lose touch with her except for a letter sent from one of her sons to 32 Ann-Street Greenock (where he had previously lived as a school teacher) he was sending her a bank draft from Australia but this is undated according to the address it could be anywhere from 1866 to the mid 1870s.
I wonder if anyone would be kind enough to try & find her in the 1871 census?
Of course there were other children in various locations so she may have moved by this time & not be in Greenock at all but it would be good to eliminate this possibility.
many thanks

« on: Saturday 03 October 09 21:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I wonder if someone would be kind enough to try & find John Ross in the 1891 & or 1901 censuses
In the 1881 census John was living with his mother in Skelmersdale:
John ROSS Head U Male 38 Scotland Farmer Of 245 Acres Employing 5 Laborers & Two Women
Anne ROSS Mother W Female 69 Scotland
Dwelling:Skeldale Hall FarmCensus Place:Skelmersdale, Lancashire, England
Family HistoryLibrary Film1341899 Public Records Office Ref RG1
John had been born in McDuff in Banff on 6 Dec 1842 & his mother was born Ann Thomson abt 1810 in Old Meldrum, Aberdeenshire.
I'd be interested to know if he ever married & had children & when his mother died so I thought the censuses would be a good starting point to narrow down my search.
Many thanks
