Gloucestershire / Forest of Dean - didicoys
« on: Friday 16 November 18 18:02 GMT (UK)  »
Hi. We are currently compiling my father in Law’s family tree as a surprise for him. One of the queries we are trying to solve is that his Grandfather was known to be a Didicoy. I’d not heard the term before, but apparently it is someone with Gypsy blood.  His name was Clarence Albert Morgan.  He was born in Westbury on Severn 1883 to Thomas A Morgan and Martha Prime Head. His grandparents  surnames were Morgan, Hammett, Head and Jones. Clarence Albert later moved to Cwm in South Wales, where he married Maud Mary Merry and raised 8 children.  He died aged 47. Does anyone on here know of any gypsy families in W on S during or before Clarence Albert’s time (1883), with any of the names I have mentioned above?  Any information would be gratefully received. Thank you.

Monmouthshire Lookup Requests / Marriage Certificate - Condition - query
« on: Saturday 26 August 06 09:23 BST (UK)  »
I have recently had the marriage certificate of my GGGrandparents and under "Condition" it states that he is a widower and has a number 2 above the word widower and that she is a widow and has a number 3 above the word widow. Does anyone know what this means please?

We think it may mean that he has been widowed twice and she three times or that this is his second marriage and her third.  Does anyone know?

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Penbryn Cardiganshire - Davies - 1871
« on: Thursday 12 August 04 08:36 BST (UK)  »
If anyone has the 1871 and or  earlier census for the Penbryn parish Cardiganshire - I would like to know who was living at the following premises with my GGG Grandfather Enoch Davies.

Ffynondudur (possibly Ffynondydir or Ffynonfudir - I have seen it spelt all three ways), Llaen Road,  Rhyd Lewis, Llandysil (again there are several spellings for this town name), Cardiganshire/Ceredigion.

This is a longstanding mystery in our family as we do not know the names of the other members of his and we are trying hard to solve it.

Many thanks I hope someone can help as we are going stir crazy surfing the web trying to find out information!!!

The Common Room / Prison records and children's homes
« on: Monday 09 August 04 19:03 BST (UK)  »
1. Does anyone have any idea how to find out where someone was imprisoned in the early 1900s and for what?  We believe that my Great Grandfather, Henry Barber was imprisoned (possibly for manslaughter) for a period of about 2 years in or around 1908.  We know that in June 1908 he resigned from the police force but we do not know under what circumstances.   Any tips or suggestions please?

2. I am aware that my grandmother (Frances Catherine Barber) and her siblings were placed in a childrens home about November 1908 - she was living in Ewyas Harold, Herefordshire, at the time.  Does anyone know how to go about finding out where they would have been placed?

US Completed Requests / Elizabeth Thomas - Liverpool to Pennsylvania
« on: Monday 09 August 04 18:21 BST (UK)  »
We are looking for information on my GG Grandmother - Elizabeth Thomas (born   1848)  who sailed to Pennsylvania from (we think) Liverpool sometime between 1868 and 1878 with her husband (name unknown), son Daniel and possibly another son John.  We know that her husband was killed in the mines out there and she came back to Britain. We would appreciate any help you may be able to give on how we could find out more about this.

Cardiganshire / Enoch Davies of Ffynondydir - Llaen Rd - Rhyd Lewis - Llandysil
« on: Monday 09 August 04 18:02 BST (UK)  »
We are trying to find out more about my GG Grandfather Enoch Davies who lived at Ffynondydir, Llaen Rd, Rhyd Lewis, Llandysil and according to the Glynarthen Congregational Chapel (Penbryn Parish) membership records, he and a Margaret Davies (maybe his wife we do not know)  were members of this chapel in 1872/73.  We know that by1878 he was living in Ebbw Vale and had remarried as his first wife had died of cholera along with two of their children Enoch and Margaret.

Does anyone have any information about him or his family?  We do not know who his parents were, who his wife was, who his other children were (we believe there were others from his first marriage) or why they left Ffynondydir? - we do know that the house was just left and that squatters eventually moved in and were still living there when my family visited there in the 1980s!
