Hi
I would be grateful for a date estimate of this image.  It shows the workers of Robert Burns and Sons whose work mainly involved the manufacture of machines for the textile mills in Galashiels. The photo may have been taken prior to a town parade. The men are all very well dressed, the horse and cart are decorated and there are possibly model boats on display in the cart.
The image must pre-date October 1902 when the gentleman who is arrowed died.
I wonder if the August 1902 town parade to celebrate the coronation of Edward VII is a possibility.
Many thanks  Malcolm

I'd be grateful for dating help with this Glasgow photo.   There are 2 candidates - my great aunts, Jess (born 1882) and Lil (born 1896).  I think the wee girl is about 7, so if its Jess ( as I think it is) the date should be around 1889. (If it was Lil the date would be about 1903).
Many thanks    Malcolm

Hello
I came across this titled photograph in the online collection of St Andrews University library.  The same image appears twice in the collection , one labelled "print" the other "calotype". The annotation suggests a date of ca1850 and the photographer is Thomas Rodger of St Andrews.  My g-g-g grandfather was Robert Lindsay of St Monans (12 miles from St Andrews) and looking at census data for 1851/61 there are few "Robert Lindsay" candidates in Fife and none closer to St Andrews......so its just possible (though unlikely) that the photo could be of my ancestor.   A dating would help me to assess it further--is it really as early as 1850?
Thanks     Malcolm

The Common Room / Fees for Marriage banns
« on: Tuesday 31 January 12 21:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
I'm attaching an image of a Old Parish Record of 1719 -- from Shotts in Lanarkshire.  It shows the marriage (or banns) of Robert Inglis and Agnes Black (my 6 gt-grandparents)...but can anyone clarify the fee which is written there?  2-10(?)-0.   Was this the "caution" fee for reading of banns?  and is the amount in Scots Pounds (ie about 4 shillings sterling)?  Seems a very large amount.
I'd be most grateful for any help.

I wonder if I can have opinions on these 2 photos.   The elderly lady (with grand-niece) is my G Grandmother, Mary Kerr (of Lochranza, Arran).  From the age of the child we know this photo was taken around 1919 , when Mary was 76.
Now a new family photo has come to light.  Family legend has it that this is of Mary Kerr and her husband, Malcolm.    From the dress of the couple I would have thought this photo was taken around 1900 (perhaps a little earlier?), when Mary and her husband would have been about 53.
Do viewers think the middle aged lady is the same person as the elderly lady--she is heavier and with a fuller face, but I think the ears, hairline, chin and general facial shape do match.   However I badly want it to fit (especially as the man in the photo would be our only image of my G Grandfather (after whom I am named)........ so am anxious not to jump to a wrong conclusion.
Many thanks

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / photograph dating help please

I wonder if I could have help with the dating of this family group.  (taken in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, I believe)
An annotation (made about 50 years ago by my late mother) on the back suggested that it might be as old as the early 1860s.  However the family to whom it was attributed has a different birth order (first two children were girls) from the photo.    I've also had advice that the photo is more (?much more) recent than 1860s.
An accurate dating might help to correctly identify the family.
Many thanks
Malcolm
