Merionethshire / Did they marry in 2 separate churches on the same day ?
« on: Sunday 03 February 13 18:08 GMT (UK)  »
I have found a marriage for my 4xggrandparents in 2 separate parish registers.  They appear to have married in both Llandanwg and Llanenddwyn on the same day - 30 August 1779 !!  I’m fairly sure that it is the same couple.  Here are the records:

MARRIAGE, Llandanwg
Hugh Griffith of the Parish of Dolgellau Batchelor and Mary Griffith of this Parish Singlewoman were married in Church by License this 30th Day of August in the Year One Thousand Seven Hundred and Seventy Nine by me Hugh Pryse, Rector.
This Marriage was solemnised between us   Hugh Griffth,  The mark of Mary Griffith
In the Presence of Rees David,  Owen Robert.

MARRIAGE, Llanenddwyn
Hugh Griffith of the Parish of Dolgellau Batchr. and Mary Griffith of this Parish Spinster were married by Banns the 30th Day of August [1779]

Can anyone tell me if this is likely (wild guesses accepted!).  Would they have rushed from one parish to the next to marry?  If so, why? Or could the parish registers be wrong? Is there any significance to one marriage being by license and one by banns?

One other point - Hugh Griffith wrote his name very neatly but he was described in the parish records for the baptism of one of his children as ‘Labourer’.  I suppose he may not have been fully literate, he might only be able to write his name, but would many labourers able to write in the late 1700s and where would he have learned to write?

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Wales / A COUPLE MARRYING TWICE?

Can anyone tell me (wild guesses accepted!) why they might want to marry twice like this?  Is it a common occurrence? Is there any significance to one marriage being by license and one by banns?

Merionethshire / Blaenau Death, burial in St Michael's, Llan Ffestiniog?
« on: Wednesday 10 October 12 12:43 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find a grave for a Robert Roberts who died in Blaenau in 1872.  I can't find any cemeteries in Blaenau that were open in 1872 (I think Bethesda opened in 1885 and St David's was even later), so I'm wondering where I should look now.  Can anyone help please.

I wondered if he might be buried in St Michael's in Llan Ffestiniog.  I think he was a nonconformist but I think some churches had a section of graveyard for nonconformist burials.  Does anyone know if St Michael's did?

Glamorganshire / TREHARRIS - A bit of help needed
« on: Wednesday 10 October 12 11:43 BST (UK)  »
I've promised a friend in Australia to try to track down a grave in Treharris.  I live about 30 miles away so I thought I'd check it out on the web before I drive there.  The grave is in St Cynon's churchyard, Treharris but I'm not getting very far looking for it.

I can find references to parish records for St Cynon's and it seems to have been replaced as the main church by St Matthias'? ....... but I can't find any reference to where St Cynon's is and if there is still a graveyard. Does anyone know please if the church been demolished and/or if the graveyard still there?

United States of America / Pennsylvania/New Jersey - General & esp. Deaths
« on: Monday 03 September 12 10:32 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find info about 'Auntie Kate' and 'Uncle Jack' who emigrated from the UK (probably from Ffestiniog, Merioneth, Wales) to the USA.  Kate is definitely related to me .... but I don't know how and am trying to find out, though at present I have very little info to work with and have no idea where I should start with USA records.

I know Kate was born Kate or Catherine Roberts (well almost certainly Roberts), probably in Merioneth, Wales in the early 1890s and had a brother called Humphrey.  She married a John Jones, also presumed to be Welsh and they had one child - a son also called Jack.  I have assumed Kate and Jack probably married in UK but their son might have been born in US.  They seem to have lived in New Jersey and were certainly living there when Jack junior was killed on 20 Sept 1943 in WW2 while serving in the US Air Force.  Jack senior died in West Orange, New Jersey on 15 Oct 1960.  Kate moved to Marcus Hook(?) Pa, to be nearer to relatives and died there on 6 Oct 1976.  Her brother Humphrey must have emigrated as well.  He had 3 wives - the last an Ella Mae Roberts(?) nee Forman (born August 1906; died 25 Nov 1990) and is apparently buried in Middleton Cemetery, Middleton, Pennylvania.

Any advice on the best way of finding out about Kate and family would be very much appreciated - I know nothing about records in the US and just don't  know where to start.  Is there anything I can look up on line?  Are there searchable Death Indexes for Pennsylvania or  New Jersey? Would the death certificates for these states give me any useful info or are they low on fact like the UK death certifs?  Are there birth certifs I could search for Jack junior and would his birth certif give useful info?  What about burial records? WW2 records etc etc.  Any pointers on where to start please.

P.S. I have searched for Kate, Humphrey and Jack in Wales but with names like Roberts and Jones it's difficult.  I know I am related to a Kate Anne Roberts born in Blaenau Ffestioniog on 20 May 1894 but she definately didn't have a brother called Humphrey and I can't find any other leads in Wales e.g. no marriage to Jack.  So having drawn a blank in the UK I'm hoping US records might be able to help.

Travelling People / FLETCHER family - were they gypsies, travellers?
« on: Thursday 13 October 11 21:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I've just started tracing the ancestry of Harriet Fletcher who married into our Russell family in 1880.  Harriet was described in the census as a hawker.  Tracing her family back through the censuses many of her family were tinmen, tinkers or braziers but it is only in the 1841 census that any are described as 'Gypsy' :- Henry Fletcher on 1841 C was described as Gypsy and his address was '1st tent in lane, Stow, Huntingdonshire'.   Although they seemed to spend quite a bit of time in Warwickshire, especially Warwick itself they seem to move around a great deal:  Northampton, Bucks.,  Oxfordshire, Huntingdonshire etc etc.

I'm quite excited at the idea that we might have gypsy blood, but can I call our Fletcher line gypsies or travellers?  What is a gypsy? is it different from a traveller? and how do a find out more about travellers/gypsies and their lifestyle in the 19th century?  I've browsed the links on this site (though many are broken) and some of the threads but most people are more expert than I and I'm having trouble finding out the basics.  Can anyone help me by pointing me in the right direction please?  Am I right in thinking that there is no way I will be able to trace then further back than the 1841 census without visiting every Record Office in the whole of England?!

Any help gratefully received!

Occupation Interests / Nursing records
« on: Thursday 22 September 11 20:21 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me if there are any records for nursing and midwifery training in Liverpool?  My grandmother was a trained midwife.  However on the 1911 census she was training as a draper and was living at the 'Messers Owen Owens Assistants' Home' at 41 43 and 45 Shaw Street, Everton, Liverpool.  I've just discovered that the Liverpool's Women's Hospital was just along the road at 107-109 Shaw Street, Everton, Liverpool.

I might be jumping to the wrong conclusion but it seems likely that she did her nursing/midwifery at the Women's Hospital.

Does anyone know if there are likely to be any information about enrolment of nurses or lists of people obtaining nursing or midwifery qualifications for hospitals in Liverpool. Would any records be held in Liverpool or are these likely to be held centrally in London?

I'd be grateful for any info - I don't know where to start looking.

Occupation Interests / THE MERCHANT NAVY & WW2
« on: Tuesday 19 October 10 16:34 BST (UK)  »
My father and his brother were both in the merchant navy in WW2 but I know virtually nothing about what they did or where they went.  About the only thing I do know is that my uncle had a rough time in the Russian Convoy  I think his ship might have been sunk.  I believe he was mentioned in dispatches.  His obituary in the paper said he received 'a recommendation from Churchill'.  Did it mean commendation?

Is there any way I can find out more about what they both did in the war and in particular what my uncle might have been involved in, or have these things not been made publicly available yet?

Any help gratefully received!!

Carmarthenshire Completed Requests / PRICE, JENKINS, THOMAS in LLANFAIR AR Y BRYN
« on: Friday 20 August 10 09:13 BST (UK)  »
I'm just starting researching the family of David Price, a taylor (b 1817ish), son of Thomas Price and Gwenllian Evans and his second wife Anne Jenkins (b 1840ish) daughter of John Jenkins and Catherine Jones of Gelli.  Also Thomas Davies, a miner and Anne's first husband (b 1834ish).  All are from Llanfair ar y bryn.  Anne ran the Post Office in Cynghordy around 1890.

Is any one researching any of these folk?  Also any info on Llanfair ar y bryn in general would be gratefully received, I'm having difficulty getting my head around this area.
