Fife / John McGilvray/ McGillvray

I'm looking for any information on John McGillvray born abt 1821 Dysart, fife married 1840 to Agnes (Keay) born abt 1815 Dysart, fife I know they came to Australia and have found most of the family after these 2 but I keep hitting a brick wall trying to find Johns parents. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This was the Name on her sons wedding Certificate he was born in Australia and married in 1910 Their Eldest child was born in Australia 1870. They had 4 children in all the birth listings have her name listed as McClide/ MacClide
Would love to find out when they came to australia and more about their past

How can I find information on the Merchant Navy?
Thomas Smith No: 8544 was with the Merchant Navy and his last discharge record is dated 1877 ( not sure of the month). Shortly after this date Thomas the boat Thomas was on went down in the Boltic Sea!!
Can anyone help me find out which boat he was on so we can get an accurate date for his death as there are no BMD records?
