FH Documents and Artefacts / Badge identification
« on: Wednesday 28 November 12 05:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hope this is the right place to post this one.
Can anyone help with identifying this badge please?  Not sure of how it would have been used as the middle piece is held to the backing plate with two bits of wire pushed through similar to a staple effect. overall size is approximately 2" by 2". Also not sure if it is made from copper as it is quite dirty, with minute shiny parts reminiscent of copper.
Thanks in advance for any assistance,
Julie

Australia / Child support in 1936
« on: Monday 21 February 11 04:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
Just wondering how I would go about finding records from 1936 or thereabouts, for someone who went to gaol (Bathurst) for not paying child support, in the Central Western part of New South Wales. ???
I can't put details of the person, as he has living descendants who might get upset!
I am checking for a friend who is related, and knows about it, but who has other family who will not discuss this issue. :-X
I have checked on trove, but as this was in a regional area, I can not find any reference.
If any reference were to be found, would this show the names of the children the man sired, but wasn't paying for? :-\
Thanks in advance for any assistance,

Technical Help / Accounts hacked- warning Completed
« on: Sunday 24 October 10 00:48 BST (UK)  »
Hope this is in the right place, and that I can mention these other sites.
My Facebook account was hacked and username etc was changed, and an email was sent asking my contacts for money, etc. >:(
I have asked facebook to look into this, but they wanted a verification email, for security reasons, from my yahoo email account. After trying to do this, I found that all incoming emails to my yahoo acount were being forwarded to a slightly different address. How does this happen? ???
I have passwords on everything (which have now been changed), but cannot access the facebook account to change anything there. This is no great loss, just annoying to find that someone out there can gain access to my online accounts and change whatever they like.
I do admit some responsibilty though, as I received an email to change my password and did so, as that was what I was trying to do, but the "hacker" was the one requesting a change at that particular time.
Make sure you fully read all content of any email requesting confirmation of any changes, before following through or clicking on any links.

Norfolk / Ann Carey 2nd Fleet convict
« on: Tuesday 19 October 10 03:17 BST (UK)  »
Ann Carey born circa 1770/2 was convicted in Norwich Assizes, Norfolk of stealing on 3 Aug 1789, and was sentenced to 7 years. She arrived in Australia on 28 June 1790 and transferred to Norfolk Island in Aug 1790. Here she "married"? Stephen Gilbert and had 3 children.
In 1793 she returned to Port Jackson, and Stephen died in 1799. Ann then married Theophilus Feutrill/Fentrill/Futerile and had a further 10 children.
Where/how would I start to look online, (I,m in Oz) for details of Ann's birth/baptism etc, with the little info I have regarding her life before transportation?
Any ideas welcome.
Thanks,

The Lighter Side / Prolific Butterworths
« on: Wednesday 22 September 10 00:55 BST (UK)  »
;D I knew the Butterworths were a prolific lot, but this takes the cake!

I came across an online tree where a Butterworth male, born in 1823, produced a child with emily in 1852. Nothing unusual there, but he also produced other children to another "spouse" between 1845 and 1872, 16 in total. At the same time, with another "spouse", between 1851 and 1871, he produced another 19 children. 36 in total. :o :o :o

One of his sons, born 1851, married Mary in 1868. Bit young, I thought, but you never know. However, between 1837 and 1857 he produced 8 children with another Mary (before he was born and up to 6 yrs old). Between 1878 and 1881 he had another 3, with another Mary. Between unknown date and 1879 he had 17 children, with another Mary, and between 1889 and 1893 he had another 3, with you guessed it, Mary.Guess he liked Mary, all of them.
Finally, with unknown mother, he had 2 children between 1871 and 1880.

The Common Room / Marriage reference
« on: Wednesday 17 February 10 03:57 GMT (UK)  »
I have checked on free bmd for the marriage of Sydney Barlow and Sarah Ann Morris.
If I search for Barlow Sydney it gives me the numbers 8c 1639 - Bury June qtr 1920, Spouse Morris.
However, if I search for Morris Sarah A, it gives me 8c 1539 - Bury June qtr 1920, Spouse Barlow.  :-\
I did look at the scans for the original pages, blew them up to about 300%, and it definitely looks like there are 2 different page numbers.
To order this cert from the GRO, how do I go about filling in the page number?
Or should I just order using one of the numbers, and hope for the best?  ???
Thanks in advance for any advice.

The Common Room / Confusing family
« on: Wednesday 13 January 10 05:08 GMT (UK)  »
Anne* married Bob (*not real names) and had a number of children, 2 named Carol and Debbie. Bob died, or they divorced.
Anne married Edward who had a number of brothers, some we will name Fred, George and Harry.
Anne's daughter Carol married Fred, in the same year.
George fatally shot Anne, Edward and then himself.
The following year Debbie married Harry.
Shades of "I'm my own grampa"???? OH laughed until he cried when this was all discovered.
How on earth do I put all this into our family tree, without repetitions of Anne, Bob, etc???

World War One / William H Betts
« on: Thursday 17 December 09 05:06 GMT (UK)  »
I have a medal card for William H Betts, see attached, (I hope).  :-\
A friend has the medal, belived to be the British War Medal. Around the outside rim is engraved 1251 W H Betts K.O.Y.L.I, which I believe stands for Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.
The medal card, found on Ancestry, states William H (transcribed as A) Betts was in the Gloucestershire regiment. Unfortunately, this is all the info we have.
We are trying to find any info regarding this person. All assistance gratefully received.  ;D

Lancashire / Walker Butterworth
« on: Friday 27 November 09 04:46 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
I have two birth certificates for Walker Butterworth.  ::)
The first was born on 2nd August 1857, Bury Street, Heywood, to Thomas Butterworth c1829 and Hannah Howe c1832. Thomas was an innkeeper.
The second was born 25th August 1857, Bury Road, Heywood, to Walker Butterworth c1833 and Priscilla Howarth c1832. Walker was a stone mason.
Both were registered on 10th September 1857, one straight after the other, and the registrar was Samuel Wolstenholme.
It is believed that Thomas and Walker were brothers, sons of Charles Butterworth c1802-c1834, and Betty Briggs c1801, and both named their sons Walker.
Betty Butterworth (nee Briggs) married Thomas Hall in 1836.
In the 1851 census, I have Thomas Butterworth 21, W Butterworth 17, Elizabeth Hall (half-sister) 13 and Jane Hall (half-sister) 12, living at 28 Bury St, Heap, Heywood.
My "quest" is to find the birth details of the brothers Thomas and Walker, and the marriage of Charles and Betty Briggs. As this is before official records and I'm in Oz, can anyone please assist?
Fingers crossed in anticipation, although it makes it difficult to type.
Thanks in advance,
Julie
