Australia / Union Jack Club, Melbourne
« on: Wednesday 08 February 12 20:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I am trying to find out a little more about my father's early days in Australia.  He lived there for seven years during the 1920's.  I have several photographs and bits and pieces.  Amongst my collection is a pin badge which bears the Union Flag encircled with the words "Union Jack Club, Melbourne".

I realise this must have been some sort of Club for immigrants, but wonder if there is anybody who has more details about this and whether there are any records from the 1920's/30's which would give me more information about this Club.   He returned to the UK in 1932.

Many thanks
Pam

World War Two / RAF WWII Bomber Command fatalities
« on: Monday 09 January 12 18:55 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find out a little more about the death of my Uncle Stanley Eric Taft  in WWII. He died on 7 September 1941 in Empingham.  He was a volunteer reserve in Squadron 144 and was only 20 years old.  I have found out that his aircraft (Hampden I) crashed shortly after take off and this is recorded as being on the Empingham to Ketton road, Rutland, which was NE of the airfield, about 4 miles away from Stamford, Lincolnshire.

It would be interesting to find out the circumstances of the crash.   His gravestone is in Birmingham so recovery would have taken place.   Perhaps there was a newspaper article about the crash, or maybe there is an official record, although I know I will have to apply to the RAF at Innsworth.

Can anyone offer advice.

The Common Room / Unwanted certificates
« on: Sunday 04 September 11 18:39 BST (UK)  »
I'm sure there must be many of you who send for certificates only to find it the wrong family.  I am accumulating quite a few.

What I would like to know is whether anyone either emails, phones or writes and asks for a certificate to be supplied only if it contains certain information relating to the family being researched.   Does payment always have to be paid up front, and is it refunded if it is the incorrect certificate.

Obviously a personal visit to a Register Office simpler, but it is always a risk when having to apply either on line or by post.

I live in Andover in Hampshire, so if there is anyone local obviously this would ideal, but I would be happy to post.   We could come to some arrangement re cost.

Warwickshire / Harrison/Reed Marriage
« on: Saturday 03 September 11 19:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I have looked exhaustively for the marriage of Isaac Harrison and Sarah Ann Reed in Birmingham from 1855 - 1866.   Sarah was born in Clapham in London, Isaac in Birmingham.  They are shown on the Birmingham Census' as married and their first daughter Jane Reed Harrison was babtised in a Wesleyan establishment in Birmingham in 1866.   I have looked at the available non-conformist registers but no luck.   Sarah is definitely shown as wife on the Baptism record.   Isaac was married before, but his wife died 1855.   I cannot find any record in London either.  In view of the non-conformist following, would they have just lived together?

Does anyone have any ideas?
