Australia / Australian Ancestry Immigration
« on: Thursday 12 February 09 01:04 GMT (UK)  »
Before I go completely insane could someone check the ancestry immigrant lists for me please. I  find ancestry extremely useful, but just sometimes things change in a way they I cannot understand.

Two days ago I was checking the assisted (and I think unassisted) immigrants and I had access to the images. I definitely downloaded a couple from 1852/55 assisted.

Today there is NO sign of images attached to the records - is it me - or them  ???

I've seen a couple of mentions of this site - has anyone used it - is it worthwhile to subscribe?

Is it available via any libraries perhaps?

Essex Completed Lookup Requests / Mystery Family
« on: Friday 16 January 09 11:47 GMT (UK)  »
I can find no trace of this family on a census prior to 1901. I do wonder if there was a second marriage - and the older children perhaps belong to one of the couple only - but whatever - I can't find anyone. it is like they teleported to 1901.

Any suggestions much appreciated

Australia Lookups completed / First Fleeter Family tree
« on: Saturday 13 December 08 14:09 GMT (UK)  »
I never seem to be very good at finding family trees online. I have lots of useful information (including from the ADB) on this couple but cannot find a tree of descendants anywhere.

I'm trying to link a few folks together without buying certificates (I know, I will probably have to, but I live in hope  ::) )

George Johnston 1764-1823 and Esther/Ester Abrahams (Julian) 1771-1846. Their children are named on the ADB but  I have not got too much further

How to Use RootsChat (Please don't post requests here) / When does delete appear
« on: Sunday 07 December 08 02:42 GMT (UK)  »
I realise mods can delete a post any time, but for we commoners (or convicts or colonials) when are we given the delete option.

I recently linked to a thread in a post, but discovered on checking that the post of interest has since been deleted, which makes my comment look somewhat illogical (which some may say is a normal event  :o but I do try to be logical, albeit sometimes weird)

It thus seems more reliable to always quote a post of interest (even from another thread) if there is a possibility of it being deleted.

A list of when/where a mortal can delete a post would be much appreciated.

Australia / Grafton area Cemeteries (NSW)
« on: Friday 05 December 08 02:15 GMT (UK)  »
Not sure if anyone has posted the online link - I just posted it in NSW resources

http://www.clarence.nsw.gov.au/cmst/cvc009/lp.asp?cat=246

but if you are using the detail to find a grave, be a little wary re the lot number in the Old Grafton Cemetery. I have a g grandmother & two g aunts buried in adjoining graves - the lot numbers given are 1236 (1929) 1222 (1955) and 1395 (1959) - the last two being in the same grave  ???

An explanation of this logic would be interesting  :)

I did visit the South Grafton lawn Cemetery one day when the maintenance man was working there. He was very helpful about locations in all the cemeteries, but I didn't know then about these interesting lot numbers.

Please someone tell me why it is so important to mark posts complete and move them to another board. Seems it makes alot of work for some - and I'd never seen it happening so much as in the past few weeks.

What works better by moving things, rather than letting them drop to the end (by date) of the threads they are on?  Sometimes I remember a thread & search for it on the appropriate board only to find it isn't there any more - very confusing. Then we have newbies who find old threads of interest (probably via google) and start posting on completed boards - also a little confusing - should these threads be moved back?

I'm sure there must be a reason, other than to create work for the greenies or send me off to google to do my searching. Please share.
