Armed Forces / Where did he serve?
« on: Monday 20 August 12 22:38 BST (UK)  »
Whilst trying to track down the place of birth of James Fagan I came across his very brief service record for WWI.  He was discharged as unfit for service but at the question have you served before he answers 18 yrs ????? and 2yrs South Africa.  I am trying to work out where he could have served for 18 years.  It looks like it says mubtion but could also say mulition or mubkia or mulikia.  The closest I have got is a Mount Mulikia which was part of a border dispute in Nigeria.  If anyone has any ideas or any ideas where I can look I would really appreciate it.

Devon / Lavinia PADDON .... Who was she?
« on: Thursday 09 September 10 18:15 BST (UK)  »
On the 1841 there is a Hannah Paddon living with William and Elizabeth Paddon in Tiverton.  In 1851 she is stil there and listed as a granddaughter.  I am trying to find which, if any of their children she belongs to!

I have receieved a copy of the birth cert which is very informative and states that Hannah was born on 25th Oct 1837 at 1/2 after 11 Oclock AM in Tiverton.  The mother is Lavinia Paddon and the father space is blanck.  The infomatant is Elizabeth Paddon, Occupier of the house in which the child was born.

I cannot find Lavinia anywhere!  The only Lavinia I can locate is listed on family search.org hich suggest her parents are JAmes and Martha and she is from Stoke Damerel.  There is a marriage I think 1838 St James which could possible be her.

Any other rays of inspiration would be much appreciated!

Thank you

Ireland / Has anyone heard of....
« on: Monday 26 July 10 20:42 BST (UK)  »
I have just found a census listing on the 1851 census for a Michael Murphy.  He is living in Workington with his family.  They list as their place of birth as Monohoe Ireland .  Ancestry go on to list it as Monhoe.  I can't seem to find any reference to such a place although I could of course be looking in completely the wrong place!!!

Any ideas would be greatfully received.
Here is the census ref if that is any help to anyone.

Sligo / Frances (IS) Dunn
« on: Tuesday 04 May 10 13:02 BST (UK)  »
This is probably a needle in a haystanck kind of request!  I am looking for a Frances (Francis) Dunn who married Elizabeth (Surname unknown).  They have two children both born in Sligo,  Morris 1826 and John 1821.  At some point before the 1841 census they leave Ireland and come to Scotland.

He can be found working as a Highway man - very exciting!

Morris then marries a Hannah Gratrix in Manchester in 1845 and Frances appears as a widower on the 1851 census.  (This is still in Didsbury South Manchester)  I am looking to see if it is possible with this small amount of info to track the family befopre they leave Ireland!

Lancashire / Hannah Siddons/Siddon maybe even Seddon
« on: Tuesday 06 April 10 17:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

I am trying to locate the parentage of Henrietta Siddons.  The one and only time I can find her in the indexes, I may be looking and not seeing or course, is at the time of her marriage to Thomas Dunn.  This can be found Dec 1873.  (If searching on ancestry it may pop up as Siddon.)  She then appears on latter census returns as Henrietta Dunn.  I cannot however locate her on any earlier returns.  She claims to be have born in Hulme, Manchester but that is not helping either.....Other than finding a Harriet Siddons boarding with a Henrietta Birchall, dates right but for the wrong girl and my over active imagination sending me down a Sherlock Holmes type story of stolen idenity(I know unlikley .......!) I am turing up very little.

Any help, ideas greatly appreciated!!

Devon / William SKINNER - Tiverton
« on: Monday 15 March 10 20:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to get my Skinner side of the tree back further than William Skinner born around 1823.  I have him marrying a Sarah Paddon in 1843 and have just received the marriage cert in the ppst today.  Due to the age etc and the writing I think his father is down as J Skinner.  My best guess for that is then a Josiah Skinner who married  Elizabeth.

Family search Org gives him 3 siblings that I can find, but all of this is guess work and not very fool proof!  Does anyone else have any information about this branch of the Skinner family, there are several, quite a few with a William too!

Any help, ideas, pointers would be gratefully received!

Cumberland / Lost and Found - Owen Fagan
« on: Tuesday 02 September 08 22:19 BST (UK)  »
I have been tracing the Fagan Family who came to Workington in the 1880's.  I knew of 2 brothers Edward and James.  It now appears that there is the possibility of a third brother Owen.  I have found a marriage between Owen Fagan and Annie Mulholland in 1879.  Annie's family were a Workington family.  Owen was a Godfather to at least 1 of James's children in 1901.  I think Owen and Annie had a son in 1904 - registered in Cockermouth - info from Free BMD.

However, I cannot find Annie and Owen on the 1901 census.  The only possility I can find is Annie spelt Fagin and Owen spelt Fagan over in Elswick in the North East.

I also have a death for Owen in Workington in 1937 registered in the same church as Edward and James.

If anyone can help me to spread any light on this topic or give me any fresh ideas where to look I would be very grateful.

Thank you

Lancashire / Skinner Family - any help gratefully received!
« on: Monday 01 September 08 21:46 BST (UK)  »
I have been tracing the Skinner family.  Does anyone have any additional information which may send me smiling on my merry way to continue my search.

The links I have so far are as follows : - William Skinner of Tiverston married Sarah Paddon they had one son William Charles (1844/45)
William Charles moved to Manchester and on the way collected his wife Mary Ann Caroline Ward from Shropshire (She uses any combination of those names on census) marriage 1876 They have 7 sons William Jones 1877, Walter 1879 - 1882, Edward Herbert 1881, Charles W 1890, Geoarge 1891, John 1894 (I think he dies 1895) and Tom 1896.  We come through from William Jones but any info on any other son would be great.  I have some possible marriages but nothing concrete. (All children born in Prestwich)

William Jones marries Henrietta Dunn in Salford and they then have 10 children.  The youngest of whom is John Fredrick born 1914 and is my husbands grandfather.  Carrie, Henrrietta, Ethel, Charles, Edward, Alfred, Mabel, William and David.  I have a small amount of information about Carrie and David.  These children were also born in Prestwich.

If anyone has any info may help with the search to widen the branches or take the roots deeper then ...........

Thank you

Hi, this is a photo of my husbands grandmother.  I think it is taken during her time working at the Manchester Royal Infirmary.  Can anything be done with it to make it any clear.  It seems to have taken a battering over the years.

Thank you
