I would like to find the date of death and burial of James Hayden (sometimes) Haydn Morris. He was born James Morris in 1859 to Ebenezer and Ann Morris in Llanbedrog a village in the old county of Caernarfon (Gwynedd) in North Wales. He was talented musically; and his family moved to Felinheli between Caernarfon and Bangor; he was taught by William Hayden the organist at Christ Church in Caernarfon and ‘professor of music’. This is where James picked up the middle name Hayden.
In 1881 he emigrated to America settling in New York State. He earned his living as an organist and music teacher. In 1884 he married Henrietta Dietz and they had two children, Arthur 1884 and Sarah 1888. Henrietta was alive in 1890 but by 1900 James Hayden Morris was living in Mount Vernon, Westchester County; widowed with both of his children. By 1910 he was still at Mount Vernon; he had married Ada Hudson in 1904 and his daughter Sarah was still at home.
The last mention I have of James is newspaper report in September 1919. In the 1920 census Ada is living in Mount Vernon but is recorded as married; there is no sign of James. In the 1930 Ada is at Mount Vernon and was widowed so I assume that James Hayden Morris died between 1920 and 1930. He travelled quite a bit around the North Eastern States, whilst he followed his musical career.

Sussex / John Williams Hughes 1878-1949
« on: Sunday 06 November 16 09:42 GMT (UK)  »
John Williams Hughes was born on March 29 1878 on a farm called Glyn in Llanystumdwy Parish, Caernarvonshire. I am distantly related to him on his mother's side. He married Elizabeth Mary Jones (born ca 1885 in Cardiganshire) in Llanilar Parish Church, Cardiganshire in 1910. They were living in Aberystwyth Cardiganshire in the 1911 and John Williams Hughes was a bank cashier.

John Williams Hughes died in Pinehurst, Mayfield Lane, Wadhurst, Sussex on February 16 1949 according to the probate calendar and his wife Elizabeth Mary died in Q2 1944 in the Uckfield Register District. The ages at death of both of them match their birth years.

I would be grateful if anyone has any information on these two, for instance where they may be buried. I'm unsure whether they had any children.

Canada / John Roberts died at New Rocklands Slate Quarry Richmond Quebec
« on: Tuesday 11 October 16 14:05 BST (UK)  »
I have discovered a newspaper report in a Welsh newspaper detailing the death of my great grandfather John Roberts at New Rocklands Slate Quarry Richmond, Quebec on July 15 1888. This discovery has come about after many years of research started by late father. John Roberts was born at Gors Ceffylau near Capel Curig in Caernarvonshire, Wales on November 4 1849. On checking the internet the slate quarry was at Kingsbury which I believe is a village near Richmond. I believe a lot of slate quarrymen from Wales went to work there and there were two work colleagues from Wales with John Roberts when he was killed. They were only slightly hurt. John Roberts was buried the next day (Monday 16th July), following an inquest, at the English Church in Richmond.

Any information regarding the death, inquest or burial or company records regarding John Roberts would be greatly appreciated.

US Lookup Requests / Arthur Wright - photographer
« on: Saturday 24 October 15 06:47 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find out what became of Arthur Wright a photographer who was born in Tring, Hertfordshire, England in May 1874. In 1898 he married Margaret Cowell of Caernarfon, Wales. They had a son Rowland Vivian in 1900 and were in West Hartlepool, County Durham, England in the 1901 census. They had two further children Cyril and Irene in West Hartlepool before emigrating to America in 1906.
In the 1910 US census they were in Durham, North Carolina with another child Denzil born in West Virginia in 1909.
By the 1920 census Arthur Wright had remarried with Mary and their first child Mary had been born in Maryland in 1916 so Margaret Cowell would have passed away before the second marriage. Arthur was living in Battletown, Clarke County, Virginia in 1920. In 1930 he was living in Greenacres, Palm Beach, Florida and in 1940 he was living in Fauquier County, Virginia.

I think I've been able to trace what became of his children from his first marriage; I'm approaching this from the side of Margaret Cowell as I'm researching her family. So if anyone could help me find when Arthur Wright and his first wife Margaret died I would be very grateful.

Staffordshire / What became of John and Hannah Cowell
« on: Thursday 22 October 15 10:35 BST (UK)  »
John Cowell was born in the town of Caernarfon in North Wales on 4th Feburary 1856. In the 1871 census he's an apprentice grocer in Porthmadog Caernarfonshire and in the 1881 census he's an assistant grocer in West Bromwich. On the 24th December 1882 he married Hannah Bradley in Sedgley; it looks like All Saints Church. It's almost certainly the right John Cowell as his father is recorded as Thomas Groves Cowell which I know is correct. Hannah Bradley was born on the 25th June 1856 in Sedgley to William and Amelia Bradley. Amelia was nee Chesterton late Sheldon. The trail goes cold after this although there is a Hannah Cowell a wife from Wolverhampton on a passenger list for the Teutonic which arrived in New York in 1898. She was sailing to join her husband John Cowell in Syracuse New York. But I can't find them in America except for a burial in Oakwood Cemetery in Syracuse for a John Cowell born 1857 who died of consumption on April 14th 1906. I'm tempted to post something in the American section also. Any help appreciated.

Glamorganshire / Mrs Frances Owen of Arvonia, Grange Gardens, Cardiff
« on: Friday 12 September 14 15:20 BST (UK)  »
Mrs Frances M Owen, Arvonia, Grange Gardens, Cardiff was my grandfather's cousin. She was born Frances Magdalen Roberts on 11/11/1870 at Tyddyn Bychan Aberdaron Caernarvonshire. She married John Henry Williams a Master Mariner in 1891 and they had six children
William John born 1891
Robert Owen born 1894
Thomas born 1895
Catherine born 1898
Henry born 1900 and
Frances Ann born 1903

The family were living in Borth y Gest near Porthmadog from ca 1894 and are in the 1901 and 1911 censuses. However John Henry Williams died at sea in 1904 and Frances remarried with another Master Mariner Richard Owen in 1911, Richard Owen was born in Pwllheli in 1844 so was 26 years older than Frances.

They moved down to Cardiff some time after 1911; there is correspondence from Arvonia Grange Gardens from 1918 onwards. Frances kept lodging rooms at Arvonia especially for seamen. Richard Owen may have died before the family moved to Cardiff; there is a possible match for his death in 1917 in Ffestiniog Register District which would cover Borth y Gest at that time. They may have moved to Cardiff after this.

Frances died in Hay on Wye in 1942 - I'm not sure why she ended up there - I have ordered a death certificate.

Her children

William John Williams died q1 1878 South Glamorgan Register District according to Ancestry
Robert Owen Williams - no idea
Thomas Williams - died in 1923 in a road accident on Cowbridge Road in Cardiff. Ancestry suggests q3 1923. I have a newspaper report of the accident, but it's a poor copy with no date on it. He had been a prisoner of war. Thomas was a Merchant Seaman.
Catherine Williams - may have married a Mr Johnson. There is a match for her death in July 1990 in Stockport Register District but this is highly speculative.
Henry Williams - became a Master Mariner - his certificates are on Ancestry. Received a medal in WW2 - Ancestry again.
Frances Ann - no idea. There is some correspondence from her from Cardiff in 1922.

I would be grateful for any information on this family.

Cardiganshire / Reverend Thomas Davies Treorchy ca1843-1910
« on: Sunday 03 August 14 13:35 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find the parents of Reverend Thomas Davies who was born in Llanbadarn Fawr in ca 1843. He was a Calvinistic Methodist Minister who spent most of his ministry in Treorchy in the Rhondda; he died in 1910.

In 1851 and 1861 he's living with Reverend Thomas Edwards and his wife Anne at a farm called Truman in Llanbadarn Fawr. Thomas Edwards was a Calvinistic Methodist Minister with a ministry at Penllwyn Chapel in Capel Bangor. In the censuses Thomas Davies is described as a nephew of Thomas Edwards and also an orphan in 1861. Thomas Davies had a sister called Eliza born ca 1845 in Llanbadarn Fawr.

When Eliza Davies married David Evans at Penllwyn Chapel in 1864 she's described as the adoptive daughter of Thomas Edwards.

Thomas Davies's grandfather was also a Thomas Davies 1791-1858 who was from Borth Cardiganshire who was a cowkeeper in Old Street, St Luke, Finchley, London. It would seem that Thomas Davies the cowkeeper had a son who moved back to Cardiganshire, got married and had two children before passing away along with his spouse. They may well have died before 1851 and I assume certainly by 1861.

I am loth to get the marriage certificate for the marriage of Eliza Davies in 1864 as there is a chance Thomas Edwards may be down as the father.

Thomas Edwards died in 1871 and he was living in Brynrheidol LLanbadarn Fawr which ties in with my research in to the family of Thomas Davies the cowkeeper in London.

Glamorganshire / Reverend Thomas Davies born Llanbadarn Fawr Cardiganshire ca 1842-43
« on: Saturday 02 August 14 14:28 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for some help on Reverend Thomas Davies born Llanbadarn Fawr in 1842-43. He spent a great deal of his life as a Calvinistic Methodist Minister in Treorchy in the Rhondda. I have managed to trace him through the censuses

1851 He's at Truman (a farm) in Llanbadarn Uchaf yn y Creuddyn aged 9 as a nephew of Thomas and/or Anne Edwards. He also had a sister called Eliza born ca 1844/45. Thomas Edwards was a Calvinistic Methodist Minister and probably influenced his nephew.

1861 He's at Truman (a farm) in Llanfihangel y Creuddyn Upper aged 18 as a nephew of Thomas and/or Anne Edwards. He’s also an orphan (he was probably/possibly that in 1851). His sister Eliza is also there aged 16.

1871 He's at Ty’r Capel; Ysbyty Ystwyth Cardiganshire as a visiting Calvinistic Methodist Minister aged 28 with David Morgan a stone mason and his family.

1881 He's at 19 Tynybedw Street Treorchy married to Jane with three children David, Eliza and Thomas. He's spent most of his ministry in Treorchy.

1891 He's still at 19 Tynybedw Street Treorchy.

1901 He's at 26 High Street in Treorchy.

1911 Thomas Davies has passed away and his widow Jane is living at Goleufryn in Treorchy.

Thomas Davies was a grandson of Thomas Davies 1791-1858 a cowkeeper in Old Street, St Luke, Finchley. Thomas Davies senior was originally from Borth Cardiganshire and one of his daughters married into my family. Thomas Davies junior was the administrator of the old man's estate who had died intestate in 1858 although this was not granted until 1871. The address for Thomas Davies junior on the letter of administration was Brynrheidol Llanbadarn Fawr.

Thomas Davies junior was also the administrator of the estate of his uncle David Davies a cowkeeper of Bethnal Green in 1893. The address for Thomas Davies on the letter of administration is 19 Tynybedw Street Treorchy.

Thomas Davies is described as a Minister of the Gospel in 1871 and a Calvinistic Methodist Minister in 1893.

I don't know who were the parents of Thomas Davies; it seems that they may have died by 1851 and certainly by 1861. Thomas Davies senior the cowkeeper in London and his wife Jane had quite a few children but the eldest that I know of definitely is Eliza Davies born in 1829 in St Luke, London. There is a Thomas Davies born 1824 in Holborn born to Thomas Davies cowkeeper and his wife Jane who may be another child. There is a Thomas Davies born ca 1826 but not born in Cardiganshire in the 1841 census in Llanbadarn Fawr who was an assistant chemist to John Cole a chemist. That's a bit of a stab in the dark.

I'd also like to find out when Thomas Davies died to see if there is a report in a newspaper which may give a clue to his family. I have also posted this in the Cardiganshire section.

Canada / Tom Harnett and his John
« on: Sunday 05 September 10 16:53 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for information about Tom Harnett and his son John. Here is what I know - Thomas Patrick Harnett was born at Moncton, New Brunswick on April 30th 1917, the son of David Harnett - I do not know his mother's name.  In 1938 he joined the RCAF; then resigned accepting an RAF commission in November of that year. When war broke out in 1939 he moved over to the UK. He was stationed at RAF Penrhos near Pwllheli, Caernarvonshire, North Wales where he met my mother's sister Rhiannon Williams - our family always called her Rhian. They were married on October 23 1940 in Catterick, Yorkshire where he had been posted. He moved back to Canada in January 1941 to work as an instructor and I assume that Rhian went with him. Their son John was born in 1941 or 1942 - I cannot find his birth anywhere in the UK so I have to assume he was born in Canada.

They moved back in 1943 and Thomas Hartnett transferred back to the RCAF in Novmember 1943. Rhian died of a brain haemorrhage on November 30 1943 aged 23 in a hospital in London. My mother Gwen Wiliams and her father Tom Williams looked after young John in North Wales whilst Thomas Harnett continued his war service. I have some photographs of them.

Thomas Harnett was repatriated to Canada in November 1945 after the end of hostilities and he took John with him. Tragically young John was killed ca 1947 in an accident with a truck - I have no more details than that.

In the 1970s some people approached my mother to say that Tom Harnett was living in the Carribean and that he wanted to make contact. My mother would have none of it. I was not at home at the time - my brother told me about it.

I have seen on one website the Thomas Harnett died in tragic circumstances in December 1991. I know no more than that. My mother passed away in 1994 and she never talked about her sister and the little boy.

I would really appreciate if anyone could throw any more light on this tragic story.
