The Common Room / Rural Sanitation Districts
« on: Tuesday 31 July 18 20:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

I am sorting through all the documents I have  gathered and came across a Census Return with only the Rural Sanitation Ditrict filled in on the top line . It is district number 123.

I have searched Google and wiki and can find lots of info on the general topic but no list of the districts with numbers.

Can anyone help?

Hi all

With my knowledge of Scottish geography being poor I could be in the wrong place here  - if so apologies.

I will be visiting Glasgow this week to do some research, spending a day in the Mitchell Library then going to Milngavie to visit the village my grandparents came from. Any tips for me of where I can find information about the church? - I am told that it has become a block of flats - where would the headstones have been moved to?

Stirlingshire / Moses McLay
« on: Tuesday 08 November 11 23:38 GMT (UK)  »
Moses McLay  b. 31/7/1715 is  my 5 x Great Grandad. I have found a marriage to Janet Buchanan on 25/11/1740 in Killearn, Stirling. However later records show that all his children were by Janet McGregor.

I can't find a death for Janet N or a marriage to Janet McG., I think I have tried every combination of names.letters etc that I can it's driving me mad. I did wonder if perhaps the 2 ladies are in fact one - possibly Janet McGregor Buchanan or Janet Buchanan McGregor?

Can anyone help me at all?

Thanks in advance

Hampshire & IOW Completed Lookup Requests / Laura Pitt 1871 census
« on: Saturday 10 October 09 10:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

Laura Pitt is my Great Grandmother birth registered Mar qtr 1871 Portsea, so I assumed that she would appear on the 1871 census as anything from 2 days old to 3 months old. However, I can't find her anywhere.

I have her in 1881 as a boarder aged 10 with a James Pitt aged 11 both scholars, in the 1891 she is a servant and then marries in 1893 to Alfred Honeywell.

Any ideas? anyone else come across a similar situation?

Australia / John William BARTHOLOMEW
« on: Tuesday 06 October 09 22:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

John William Bartholomew was b 30/04/1878 in Brentford, Middlesex, England , he married Florence Belmore/Bulmore on Christmas day 1899, they had a son named William born 1900 died 1901. John was in the RN and on 31/03/1904 he was serving on HMS Royal Arthur stationed in Sydney, where he bought himself out of the navy.

Florence was living 'as a wife' with John's brother Ernest in the 1911 census, there were 6 children in 1911. In 1917 Florence marries Stuart West and Ernest marries Hilda Rose Greenburg.

As a family we had at first thought that Florence was the 'baddy', but it looks like John skipped on her for whatever reason.

We are now trying to find out what happened to John after 1904, can anyone suggest a starting place to look?

I have searched Ancestry and there are several John Bartholomews working as ships crew and/or travelling about  btu no real detail to be able to be sure that one of them is him. He was a Petty Officer second class when he left the navy, there is no mention of any trade.

I look forward to hearing from someone who can give me a tip as to where to go nwext.

Hampshire & IOW Completed Lookup Requests / Sophia Martin/Martain c1808
« on: Sunday 20 September 09 22:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

This lady is my GT Gt Gt Grandmother and is a little bit of a mystery. On her marriage certificate ( a relation has this) her father is shown as Thomas Martain. Prior to her marriage to Harry/Henry Pitt she has 4 daughters; Mary Ann 1833-4, Caroline 1835/6, Catherine 1837/8 and Sarah 1841.

Mary, Caroline and Catherine are with their mother - on the 1841 census.

Mary and Sarah are on the 1851 with Sophia and Henry and the new children of the marriage.

Marys marriage certificate is confusing as she is shown as Mary Ann Martin with father Herny Martin (not Pitt) but this may be Henry Pitt as occupation shown as carpenter.

So after all that my query is :

was Sophia married prior to her marriage to Henry Pitt? I find it very unusual for someone to have 4 children out of  wedlock, she is apparently of independant means on the 1841 census.

This is all happening in Portsea/Portsmouth if anyone can find anything I would be grateful

Thank you

SAndra
