Midlothian / Edinburgh/Leith Schools
« on: Monday 11 December 23 10:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I wonder if I could tap into the local knowledge of those of you familiar with Edinburgh and Leith?

I'm trying to work out which schools a boy born in Edinburgh on the 4th of December 1922 would have attended.

Not sure where the family lived before 1929, but between 1929 and 1931 they lived at 47 Madeira Street, Leith, after which they moved to 100 Montgomery Street, Edinburgh, where they remained for many years.

I would be interested to know which school he would have attended from the Madeira Street address.

It was been suggested to me that after moving to Montgomery Street he would have attended Leith Walk School. Could anyone confirm this, and would he have moved on to an upper school when he reached the age to do so, or would he have stayed at Leith Walk for the remainder of his school days?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Keith.

World War Two / O.S.O.
« on: Monday 07 August 23 10:34 BST (UK)  »
Not quite armed forces, but war-related certainly.

I've just found someone on the 1939 register, living at West Park Road, Southampton. He, like a number of other men living on that street, have the occupation "Draughtsman O.S.O.".

I just can't think what it could be, but can anyone tell me what O.S.O. stands for?

Regards,

Keith.

Glamorganshire Lookup Requests / Glamorgan Archives Lookup
« on: Tuesday 30 August 22 09:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Is there anyone who could check a couple of baptisms at Glamorgan Archives for me please?

Unfortunately, details are scant as they have simply been noted on a scrap of paper, without any indication as to the source of the information, nor who made the note.

Both are supposed to have taken place in Neath, but I have checked online and there is no trace of them. Glamorgan Archives have also checked and confirm they are not online. So now I need to check the original sources.

They are:

Edward Chapple, son of Henry Edward Chapple, baptised 12th of May 1812
Henry Edward Chapple, son of Henry & Jane Chapple, baptised 27th of May 1786.

I would need the following checked:

Neath registers (also, are there any duplicate registers which are not online?)
Bishop’s Transcripts
Are there any non-conformist chapels in the area which have not been included in the RG4 record set?
Any other nearby church which Neath residents might have used.

If anybody can help that would be great, and much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Keith.

Pembrokeshire Lookup Requests / Wilcox/Wilcock - Hayscastle Memorial Inscriptions
« on: Tuesday 10 August 21 13:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I wonder if there is anyone with a copy of the Hayscastle memorial inscriptions who would be able to check something for me?

I have three burials at Hayscastle:

James Wilcock, Roseland (Rhosylan), September 6th 1864, aged 36
Joseph Wilcock, Roseland, November 19th 1864, aged 64
Mary Wilcox, The Cross, February 10th 1875, aged 73

I think that Joseph and James were father and son.

I'm hoping that all three will have a gravestone, so if anyone can check for me I would be really grateful.

Regards,

Keith.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Signature Comparison
« on: Wednesday 30 June 21 14:42 BST (UK)  »
I have these two signatures and would like opinions as to whether any of you think they were by the same hand.

The first is from 1848 and the second from 1857.

Cheers,

Keith.

Staffordshire / An Unusual Request - Silverdale
« on: Monday 22 March 21 12:30 GMT (UK)  »
Right, this is going to be a rather unusual request.

Is there anyone out there who has a male relative born in Silverdale, or it's immediate surroundings, on the 26th of August 1890, and who has vanished off the face of the earth?

I don't want to muddy the waters by giving any names here at the moment, but the gentleman I'm researching can be traced back from his death in 1952 as far as the 1911 census, where he gives his place of birth as Silverdale, but before this there is no trace whatsoever of him. More than one family member has tried, over the last four years, but he appears to have been invisible! I've now come to the conclusion that, for whatever reason, there has been a change of name somewhere down the line.

If you do have a mystery man on your family tree who matches the criteria I would love to hear from you.

Cheers,

Keith.

Cheshire / Elworth Memorial Inscriptions
« on: Tuesday 19 January 21 10:54 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone have access to the Elworth memorial inscriptions and is able to check for a particular grave for me?

14 year old Joseph Wright died at Bradwall Reformatory School in October 1887. He was buried at Elworth on the 11th of October.

If anyone can check to see if his grave has a marker I would be really grateful.

Cheers,

Keith.

Cambridgeshire / John Howlet, Burrough Green
« on: Thursday 25 June 20 12:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I wonder if anyone has access to the Cambridgeshire FHS CD "Indices of Cambridgeshire Poor Law Papers, Master and Apprentices, Settlement and Bastardy Papers" and could help me?

John Howlet was baptised at Burrough Green on the 19th February 1775. He was the illegitimate son of Mary Howlet.

I'm trying to work out who his father was, and hoping that there may be some reference in the Bastardy Papers contained on the above CD.

If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

Regards,

Keith.

Breconshire Lookup Requests / David Williams, Talgarth
« on: Thursday 14 June 18 14:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Does anyone know if the Talgarth Monumental Inscriptions have been recorded?

I'm trying to find any information about a David Williams, who was buried at Talgarth on the 8th of July 1824. He was 47 when he died.

Many thanks,

Keith.
