London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / DRUITT baptism, Clerkenwell
« on: Tuesday 27 April 10 15:19 BST (UK)  »
I am seeking details on the birth/baptism of Richard DRUITT (possibly spelled as Drewitt, etc) born 1776 in Clerkenwell. Age given on death certificate, i.e not a census guess, so should be fairly accurate, and birthplace was given consistently on censuses. This is a major brickwall for me so I have my fingers crossed. TIA.

Robert Stride married Mary Oliver, 1822 St Andrew, Holborn. Does anyone have a copy of this PR to see if perchance there are any details of Robert's father? Long shot, but worth a try. TIA.

Canada Lookup Request / Census lookups please: JohnMcKenzie Duncan bon 1863
« on: Monday 30 November 09 10:43 GMT (UK)  »
Trying to find this gentleman for a friend's brickwall. We assume we are looking for an Ontario census record, but this is not certain.

I found a John M. Duncan in Artemesia Township on the 1881 Family Search Census, but need to try to confirm this is the right family, as the date of birth is given as 1865.

I know nothing about Canadian genealogy, can births be looked up too?

Midlothian / Midlothian coverage on CPR's at SCotland's People

Before I waste another kings ransom on credits at SP searching for things that don't exist, can anyone tell me if I'll be lucky with Edinburgh on the new Catholic Parish Registers, early 19th century? I can't get the PDF with the coverage listed to open on this borrowed computer.

Occupation Interests / Shipwrights - Taylor's Wharf, Barking
« on: Wednesday 28 October 09 11:07 GMT (UK)  »
Having trouble in finding an ancestor I looked to his job and his family.

Henry Taylor was born 1805 in Deptford, according to censuses (no luck finding the baptism), but he made his living as a shipwright in Barking, Essex. His place of work was Taylor's Wharf and it was obviously a family business.

Also working there was a Griffiths Taylor. Now then, Henry named his son Griffiths, but he was born in 1840. The Griffiths Taylor I found (in Pigot's 1839) obviously wasn't the son. So was he Henry's brother? Father? Alas he's not showing up on the 1841 census (or later).

Griffiths Taylor is an extremely unusual name. It should be fairly easy to track down Henry using this connection, but it isn't.

Are there any experts on the Barking Wharfs here? I need some sort of lead.

(Henry's parents are not shown on his marriage record http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,394244.0.html)

Canada / Foether/Fother family, Waterloo County, Ontario 1880's
« on: Friday 28 August 09 17:54 BST (UK)  »
A friend is looking for her ancestor Carrie Lee Foether, daughter of John and Kate, born 1859 in Linwood, Ontario. She asked me to help because I live nearby, but I come from England and know nothing of Canadian genealogy!

I found this on the 1881 Wellesley, Waterloo North, Ontario census, which has to be the right family:

Devon Lookup Requests / Baptism 1809, Henry Joseph WINGFIELD
« on: Wednesday 05 August 09 15:10 BST (UK)  »
Henry moved to London, gave his birthplace on the 1851 census as Devon, but no details. He was a "cowman" by occupation.

If anyone could spare a few minutes to check for him on any Devon baptism register they have, I would be so grateful. I've been searching for this man's place of birth for almost ten years now, and hoping the greater number of people researching online now may lead me to him.

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / William Barnet GAY, born circa 1775
« on: Wednesday 05 August 09 13:29 BST (UK)  »
I would love to get this brick wall broken down. William married Dorothy Stan(d)field in St George in the East, Stepney, in 1799. William was a Carpenter but his son was a Silk Manufacturer. I have long suspected this family originates from a Huguenot line, as silk keeps cropping up. William's middle name also seems to be significant because Barnet or variations of it were used for several generations.

I have been "collecting" people with the surname Gay in the East End, but I cannot for the life of me find a birth or baptism for William. It doesn't help of course that I don't know where to look. This family seemed to spread all across Bethnal Green, Spitalfields, Whitechapel, and Stepney. It could be anywhere.

If anyone has access to the parish records in any of these places, I would be so grateful if you could look for William, and let me know even if you DON'T find him, so I can rule a parish out?
