World War One / Help identifying John Lane
« on: Friday 11 January 08 13:52 GMT (UK)  »
I have very little information about my great grandfather John Lane prior to his marriage in 1905 at the age of 24. I can only trace him to this point.  However a new piece of information has come to light that he died in 1917 supposedly in Gallipoli.

I have looked at the Commonwealth War Graves site and the only John Lane that died in 1917 at the age of 36 was this one.

LANE, JOHN  Lance Serjeant East Surrey Regiment "A" Coy. 1st Bn.
Date of Death:    18/07/1917   Arras Memorial

Can anyone advise as to what I can do to find out more about this man?

I hope that is enough info to go on.

thanks  Linda

East Lothian (Haddingtonshire) / Help with Place Name in Hadingtonshire
« on: Tuesday 06 November 07 16:56 GMT (UK)  »
I have just found an 1851 census entry on Scotlands People for John Ramage but cannot make out the "where born" other than I think the first part definitely says Hadingtonshire.  Could it be Dirleton or am I being fanciful?

In the 1841 census this person got a "yes" for coming from Midlothian - their residence was Edinburgh at the time so I am a little confused with this.

Any help really would be appreciated.

Scotland / Irregular Marriage
« on: Tuesday 06 November 07 11:26 GMT (UK)  »
I have just found an interesting (well to me anyway) entry on Scotlands People and wonder if anyone can shed some light on it?

"Married - Irregularly John Ramage and Margaret Smith they appeared before the session the 29th April 1798 showed their marriage lines dated at Edinburgh Jan 2nd 1798 were rebuked for their irregularity and again declared married persons"

This entry was listed on the OPR for Cockpen, Midlothian, and dated for the first marriage 2nd Jan 1798 Edinburgh and not for 29th April.

My main interest is that the couple appear to have married twice once "irregularly" in Edinburgh and then again after some chastisement in Cockpen.  Why would they have had a second marriage if they already had marriage lines?

Any help would be much appreciated!

I have been searching unsuccessfully for my gg grandparents on the 1871 census. If anyone has any advice I would be very grateful.

James Steadman B1847 St Pancras

Wife

Mary Ann Adams B1848 St Martins in the Field   married Dec quarter 1869 Holborn 1b page 820

I have both with their families on the 1861 census and again in 1881 - RG11 0351/100 page 33.

As an added bonus I have found the Steadman family down as Steadmans, Headman, and Shadman on the various records.  I have been searching on ancestry using the above but cannot find a fit.  James is a Fret Cutter/carpenter/sawyer on various documents if that helps at all.

I hope that is enough to go on.

Ross & Cromarty / Johanna McKay, Achnahannat, Kincardine Parish 1814 to ?
« on: Monday 07 May 07 19:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I am trying to find out what became of Johanna McKay m.s. Munro b abt 1814.

Her husband Donald died in 1866 he was the school master at Achnahannat (various spellings). I have her on each census 1841 to 1871 and then she has disappeared.  I have tried looking for a death on Scotlands people and on the English BMD with no luck so far.

Any ideas gratefully received.

Linda

p.s hope I have done this right as it is my first post on roots chat.
