Armed Forces / Is he my 2x Grt Grandfather
« on: Thursday 18 April 24 16:06 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I am not sure I have asked about this topic in the past. It will be awhile ago so I have lost track. I apologize if I have.

My Grt Grandfather George Norman was born in west Bengal India in 1880. (there may be 3 children in total born in India) George's occupation was a deckhand in the Navy, he died in Ireland falling from a train in 1915.

Birth details
Name   George Norman
Gender   Male
Birth Date   29 Nov 1880
Baptism Date   15 Dec 1880
Baptism Age   0
Baptism Place   Bengal, India
Father   George Norman
Mother   Bridget

I found George along with his father on the 1911 Irish census.

On the census the Father was a widow (wife Bridget Mullin) aged 65, born Gravesend England, retired from the 39 Dord Regiment.

I found a George Norman on the 1871 Census based at the Royal Marine Barracks Gillingham, Kent.

I am trying to see if I can find a link.

Would either Royal Marines or the 39 Dord Regiment have been in India around 1880.

Thanks.

Staffordshire / Not sure if I am on the right track.
« on: Wednesday 20 March 24 15:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I would appreciate any help.

I am not convinced I am following the right family.

I am looking for the parents of Harriet Brookes, according to the 1939 register she was born 26 June 1883 in Bilston, Staffordshire. (unable to find birth record) there are variations on the name Brookes so makes it difficult.

Harriet Marriage.

Marriage: 17 Jul 1901 St Cuthbert, Churchtown, Southport Lancs. John Jones - 23, Provision Trade? Bachelor, 133 Old Park Road Harriet Brookes - 21, Spinster, 130 Newton St. Groom's Father: John Jones, Ironmonger Bride's Father: George Brookes, Boat Man?

In 1901 Harriet is living with her Mother Ann (Widow) Born Abt 1842 Bilston Staffordshire. The address matches the marriage record. (130 Newton St). Ann's Granddaughter is also at the address (Florence Johnson).

Harriet's sister is Alice Brookes (Born Abt 1876) Married Edward Johnson 25 May 1896, Birkdale, Southport. Father George Brookes Boat loader. (Info gained from marriage certificate) Ann (mother) was living with Alice in 1911 South Manchester.

I found a Marriage for George Brookes and Ann Hayward 10 Feb 1861 St Peters Walsall Stafford. So I have been following that line but I am not sure I am on the right track.

According to the person who I am doing the family tree for they were told that George had a fleet of Barges (not sure where) this would fit in with the information on the marriages of his daughter.

The George and Ann I have been following there is no mention of boats he is recorded as being a general Laborer on the 1881 census. So I may have the wrong George and Ann.

If anyone can help with Information/advice I would be thankful.

Thanks

« on: Saturday 25 November 23 16:20 GMT (UK)  »
I have tried to attach the 1939 Register but it wont attach. I cropped it down so only the relevant info but still no joy. I am almost sure Irene was in some form of workhouse. The information below is all I have.

Translation
Clitheroe RD  District H73-1
Hitchen Irene 1 Feb 17        occupation =Incapacitated
There are over 40 other people on the register all stated as Incapacitated.

Irene Hitchen born 1 Feb 1917. I believed she traveled to Australia in 1950 aged 35 c/o Manchester Northern Hospital. She married Edward Daniel Daley (not confirmed) and may have had three children. Possible death 2009 New Zealand.

I know that Irene's Brother was in the Swinton, Industrial School, Wigan from 1914-1924 he was born in 1910. The school was for pauper Children.

Their mother was in the Wigan union workhouse in 1921.

There is another sister Margaret Born 1922-2011. Margaret was living with her mother in 1939.

I would appreciate any help
Thanks.

Occupation Interests / Beer House Keeper
« on: Friday 15 September 23 23:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Is it possible to find the history of a Beer House.

I have an Harriet Finney (widow) recorded on the 1861 Census she was a Beer House keeper at King Street, Odd Fellows Arms, Salford.

On the 1851 Census she was living with her Husband in Cheshire they owned a large amount of land. Her husband died in 1857. I am trying to find out if her husband went with Harriet to Salford.

I believe they sold most of the land to Cheadle Royal Hospital, so I am assuming they sold up and bought the Odd Fellows Arms?

I would appreciate any help.
Thanks
