The Common Room / 1911 census - dead children
« on: Saturday 31 January 09 15:12 GMT (UK)  »
Having purchased the pages for some direct ancestors in the new 1911 census, the family were surprised to discover that it contains a section for number of children born to the family and of those how many had died and this has uncovered some dead siblings born to my grandmother's family that even she may not have known ever existed.
My question is this - did the census rules state that these included any stillborn children or would these have been children that lived long enough to be baptised (and died between censuses)?  Should I check baptism records in the parish archives or go straight to burial records?  Were stillborn children ever baptised prior to burial?
Thanks

The Common Room / District of St Olave
« on: Sunday 04 May 08 17:15 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know where the district of St Olave is which is quoted in the English Births, Marriages and Deaths lists.  I am trying to locate the death of a relative between 1841 and 1851 and have seen that it may be in York, Exeter, Southwark and Woolwich?  Any ideas?

Many thanks

England / chairwoman
« on: Friday 29 June 07 01:24 BST (UK)  »
I have a relative (and have seen other women) listed in the 1861 census as a 'chairwoman'.
Do they mean charwoman i.e. cleaner or is this some bizarre profession of chair-mending?
Please advise.  Thanks

England / In 1861, what constituted a 'Minor'?
« on: Saturday 23 June 07 12:29 BST (UK)  »
I have a marriage certificate from August 1861 where both the bride and groom are described as 'minors'.  Does that mean they are under 18 or under 21?
At what age did people become 'of full age'?

Thanks

England / what constituted a pauper?
« on: Thursday 21 June 07 20:53 BST (UK)  »
I thought that if you became a pauper, it meant that you couldn't pay your rent and you were carted off to the workhouse.  I have a relative in 1851 census who (along with his wife) is listed as pauper agricultural labourer but is still living with his wife and three of his children.  Can anyone explain what financial circumstances he is likely to have been in and how he would have avoided the workhouse?

Sussex / Who owned Park Farm, Arundel?
« on: Tuesday 19 June 07 12:45 BST (UK)  »
Is there anybody out there that knows how to find out details about Park Farm Arundel in 1850's or 1860's as I believe this to be the location where members of my ancestors met.  Any details about crops, working conditions, social climate, owner or landlord etc.
Even better if you have knowledge of actual people that worked there, especially the Burch or Puttock family.

Many thanks

Sussex Lookup Requests / William Burch b1817 Arundel
« on: Friday 15 June 07 12:44 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for info on William Burch that married Ann Sabina Ruff on 11 June 1842 in Binsted.  On the marriage certificate, his father is listed as "not known".
Am I right in assuming therefore that his surname was taken from the mother's side and if so, is there any way I could find out who his mother was?
In 1851 census, he is living with wife and family in Park Cottages, Arundel and is listed as 34 years old, which if correct would make him b1817ish.
I have found a William Clarke Birch in the IGI who was christened on 17 Nov 1816 in Arundel but this lists both a father William and mother Mary so I am not sure if this is the same person.
Any help or hints would be welcome.
Thanks

Kent / Fred Bush and Isabella Harpwood in Woolwich / Plumstead / Stratford
« on: Sunday 27 May 07 22:05 BST (UK)  »
Fred Bush b1878 in Enfield married Isabella Hannah Clara Harpwood b1877 (daughter of Henry Harpwood and Mary Ann Isabella Wright) in Woolwich in 1900.  They had between 8-10 children, a couple of whom were called Herbert (b1897? Stratford), Mildred, Ronald, Laurence.  If anybody has any information on them, I would be very interested.
Thanks

Sussex / Looking for the right Fanny (Puttock/Puttick)
« on: Sunday 27 May 07 21:36 BST (UK)  »
I have been researching my great Grandmother Fanny Puttock for months and although I have been sent useful info from Dave and Judith Puttick, I still cannot say that I have found the definitive Fanny that I am looking for.
The facts that I know are that she married Henry (Harry) Burch on 19th May 1883 in Lyminster, her father's name given as James.  They had five children Arthur (b1884), Clara (1886), Percy (b1888), Raymond (b1889) and Reginald (b1893).  In 1891 census, she is listed as 35 (b1855-1856), birthplace given as Wisborough Green.  She died in 1900, age given as 45 (b1854-1855).  There are three or four matches for Fanny Puttock/icks in the area at the time, more if she lied about her age and I am looking for definitive proof of which family she came from.  I am now happy to do it by process of elimination as she was supposedly a spinster at the time of her marriage in 1883.  If anybody has Fanny Puttock/icks in their family and know what happened to them then I would like to eliminate them from my enquiries..  Also anybody that can link an Ellen Squelch (wedding witness) to a specific Fanny or know of any Fannys living near Lyminster at the time (she may have been in service but none seem to jump out in 1881 census).  Of course she may have also been a witness at somebody's wedding either as Puttock or after May 1883 as Burch.  Any clues gratefully received.
