Canada Lookup Request / Euphemia Bowden - died 28 Sep 1955
« on: Tuesday 15 October 13 21:48 BST (UK)  »
Hello

It's been some time since I've been on Rootschat, but I wonder if someone can help.

I came across a reference on another site that the half sister (Euphemia Bowden) of a distant relative, died on the 28th Sept 1955 in Victoria, British Columbia.

I've tried to contact the person who posted this, but they appear to have no other info.

Euphemia was born on the 7th of Feb 1868 in Knockando, Moray, Scotland to William Bowden and Jessie Isabella Cumming.

Following Williams Bowdens early death, Jessie married a William Colville McDonald who was tragically drowned.  The second marriage produced a son William.

I've included a link below to the last sightings of both William and Euphemia.

Any information on either would be greatly appreciated.

I don't expect anyone to go to any expense, as I can afford to source the required documentation if pointed in the right direction.

Thanks very much for reading and any help you can give.     Regards,  Steve  :)

Hello

Posting on behalf of my sister.  Previously posted regarding this family over a year ago.  (Sister promises she will get round to registering).

Looking for whatever happened to Romeo Mauchlen and where did he go?  There is a possiblity that he could be found as MacLean - as other siblings were buried under this surname - which has been carried forward to this day - or Mauchlin/Mauchline .

He was the son of Robert Mauchlen and Jane Drysdale who married on 19 June 1873 in Tradestown, Glasgow, Scotland.  The family do not appear on the 1881 or 1891 census in either England or Scotland.

On  a free search of the 1901 census (in Lancashire) I found Romeo with his father and his siblings:
Robert Mauchlen age 53 born Scotland  - father.  (wife Jane dies in 1900)
Isabella Mauchlen, 18, b 1883, Ireland
Romeo Mauchlen,  21, b. 1880, Ireland
Elspeth O Mauchlen, 16, b. 1885, Ireland
Basil W Mauchlen, 14, b.1887, Ireland
Marshall J Mauchlen, 12, b.1889, Lancashire (free bmd has him born as 1888)
Rowena J Mauchlen, 9, b. 1892, Lancashire  (free bmd has her born as 1890)

On free bmd I can find Romeo marrying in Toxtheth Park in 1906 (to either a Mary Ellen Myers, or Janet Young.  After this - nothing.  He doesn't appear to be on the 1911 census anywhere.  Also tried the Irish one.  He did not die in Scotland.  Possibly emigrated?   Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Do not spend money on this one.  Thanks very much.  Regards,   Steve  :)

Fife / Thomas Gourlay killed by the fall of a wall 1872
« on: Friday 01 July 11 22:31 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I'm doing some research for the 83 year old friend of my mother in law.  I'd put it aside until after the 1911 census and now I want to tie up loose ends.

I 've just downloaded the death entry and RCE for Thomas Gourlay (a mason), was her gt gt grandfather.  He died on 19th April 1872 at 3.30 pm along with Peter Sangster and at least one other man, William Haynes, when a wall at 'Nairn and Companys Floor Cloth Factory' at Pathhead in the district of Dysart, Fife, fell on them - the 3 deaths one the one page from SP indicate that they were killed instantaneously.

The RCE gives no other information other than he was the widower of Ann Dall (I was aware of his marriage to Ann and know of their children), and that his usual residence was in Cupar.

In view of the fact that there were 3 deaths at the same time I'd imagine it got some press coverage on the day.  Is anyone able to point me in the right direction?  Thanks very much.

Regards,   Steve   :)

Hello,

I'm seeking help from the 'Military Gurus' please.  I'm helping an elderly family friend put together a family history.  To date, I've put together and extensive portfolio of downloaded bmds etc and and have put together a respectable amount of information.

However, the lady in questions father is the one on which I want to get more info and honour his memory, so that future generations of the family know what he did during WW1.

I've been on the National Archives website and downloaded his Medal card.  Surprisingly - to me (I lack the military knowledge of the site/s), it shows only one medal  to Serjeant J Paterson , service no. 240095 - being awarded a DCM in 1818 as a member of 1/5 Royal Scots Fusiliers.  Under the 'Operations Header' are the words 'DCM LG 1.5.1918.
1.  Is there anywhere I can get further info on him?  I'd have thought that he'd have had a variety of other medals as well, Victory etc.
2.  Where can I source the London Gazette entry?  Apparently it's in there with a date of 01st May 1918.
3.  Lastly.  At some point he joined the Royal Flying Corps.  I've been forwarded a photo which would seem to show him as a Pilot Officer( one ring on his sleeve).  Where can I source his RFC record?

His full name is John Mckay Paterson.  D.o.B 01 Apr 1894.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Regards,   Steve   :)

Antrim / Robert Mauchlen and Jane Drysdale a 20 year gap.
« on: Wednesday 17 February 10 06:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

My first time post on the Ireland boards on behalf on my sister and husband.

The family name I’m searching for is MacLean (from Scotland, who have been based in  Lancashire for about 100 years).  However, family lore has it that this family was originally called Mauchline/Mauchlen/Mauchlin and came from Ireland.  (where, we’ve no idea).

What we have as fact is that a Robert Mauchlen (variously a druggist asst / or chemist) – father – George Mauchlen (Master Builder), mother Isabella McDougall - married a Jane Drysdale on 19 June 1873 in Tradestown, Glasgow.

They had at least the following children

1.   George Mauchlen – my brother in laws direct ancestor? b.  30 Sep 1873, Central District     Glasgow  (Scotlands People)
2.   Robert Drysdale Mauchlen b.  22 Apr 1877, Antrim, Antrim, Ireland. (IGI)
3.   John Mauchlen b. 13 Apr 1880, Belfast, Antrim  (IGI)

The family do not appear to be in the 1881/1891 census for Scotland or England?
~~~~~~~~-----------------------
The next record of this family appears to be the death of ‘Robert Mauchlin’ (Chemists Apprentice), aged 18 years on 14 June 1895 in St Giles, Edinburgh.  Informant Robert Mauchlin (father) – 8 Summer Street, 1 Carlisle)
Then, on  a free search of the 1901 census (in Lancashire) we have only
Robert Mauchlen age 53 born Scotland  (wife Jane dies in 1900)
Isabella Mauchlen, 18, b 1883, Ireland
Romeo Mauchlen,  21, b. 1880, Ireland
Elspeth O Mauchlen, 16, b. 1885, Ireland
Basil W Mauchlen, 14, b.1887, Ireland
Marshall J Mauchlen, 12, b.1889, Lancashire (free bmd has him born as 1888)
Rowena J Mauchlen, 9, b. 1892, Lancashire  (free bmd has her born as 1890)
________________________________________________________________________
George MacLean – my brother in laws grandfather, married Sarah Lilian Woodrow on 11 Jan 1898 in St Pancreas London.  We have the family forward from then.  I’ve posted a previous query and received a response on
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,391987.0.html
What we’re looking for is further evidence/confirmation, that George MacLean is the George Mauchlen born in Glasgow 1873.  (my sister is awaiting the death cert for George, who died in 1926 in Lancashire which she’s sent away for, which we hope will confirm the name change)
From the Irish side we’re looking to find out where we can find any info relating the children born there and if there are any surviving records or the ‘81/1 census records with the family on it.  (e.g. there can't have been too many Basil Wilberforce Mauchlens born anywhere).
Thanks very much.  Regards,   Steve  :)
Hello
I'm posting this on behalf of a colleague who is starting out on FH today, to show him what a helpful bunch of people Rootschatters are and give him an idea of the resources available.
His maternal Grandmother, Ann Dodds Lancaster was born in Q4, 1898 in Sunderland.
Could some kind soul come up with the 1901 census  details for her
Thanks very much.
Other Countries / Singapore - Herbert Archibald McKnight - Completed
« on: Monday 13 July 09 22:06 BST (UK)  »
Hello
Posting this on behalf of the sister of my brother in law.  Her husbands great uncle was the above - born 2nd qtr 1885 in West Derby England.
Family history has him owning a business, the  'Californian Coffe Shoppe' at 235 Orchard Road Singapore. Some letters exist from the late 1930s to July 1940 with correspondence from Herbert to Licencing authorities in Singapore bemoaning other businesses and their sale of alcohol.
Oral historyhas him being well off/wealthy - and being on one of the last vessels leaving Singapore which was sunk.  Following that - never heard from again.
I personally am well aware that Singapore fell on 15 Feb 1942 and am also aware of the chaos in the final days as ships tried to get out.  I'm sure that manifests were not kept and if they had, they'd have gone down with the ships which were lost.
Queries are:
1.  Are there any lists of civilians who tried to escape.
2.  Are there any lists of businesses in Singapore prior to the Japanese occupation
3.  What  woould have happened followqing the war to the unoccupied property.
Thanks very much.  Regards,   Steve.   :)
Lanarkshire / Inspector Darby Byrne died 03 Aug 1918?
« on: Sunday 12 July 09 23:16 BST (UK)  »
Hello
The above is a distant relative of my brother in law.
Apparently he was an Inspector in the Glasgow Police, killed and by a prisoner in cells.  That's all that has been handed down.
Any help or pointers where further info can be gleaned would be much appreciated.
He was married to Catherine Burns, he was also know as Jeremiah.
Closed - he died on the above date - but not killed.  Downloaded death entry from SP.
Regards,   Steve  :O)
